Paid versions give much better results—more extensive information with less 'hallucination' and errors—but even the free deep dives can be quite worthwhile. My favourite for this purpose is Google's Gemini, with ChatGPT a close second, and Grok 3 a close third.
The first time I prompt-requested deep research and received the results, I couldn't quite believe all I had to do was ask to get such a comprehensive well-structured report. Ever since I discovered it, I seem to be addicted to deep research and use it almost every day for something or the other.
Just recently, a friend in the US shocked me by telling me she was taking 2 grammes of the diabetes medicine, Metformin, per day, despite being pre-diabetic. The medication has such side effects that I couldn't understand how it could be prescribed at such a high dose for someone who was not yet diabetic.
I decided to get some information on the use of Metformin for pre-diabetics and asked for an in-depth report. I specified in my prompt that it should be simple and not filled with medical jargon or terms. I got one in a matter of minutes, and it was perfectly understandable. I was surprised to learn that the drug is actually given to overweight people who are potentially diabetic. All the same, considering my friend had intense gastric side effects, I passed on the report to her and suggested she use it to ask her doctor if there were better alternatives. I requested reports for my medications, as it's a good idea to be well informed about what one is taking regularly. I gave the reports to my doctor, who said she would love them in simple Hindi. That was easy enough. She now uses them with her patients. A hacks for everyday life scenarios
Deep research is so useful that it's an immediately visible feature in all the AI assistants. While it sounds like something meant for academics, I find it's been useful for so many everyday life scenarios. It's easy enough to see how it could be useful at work. I gave someone a full fleshed-out plan on how to hire an Instagram account manager. The report was truly comprehensive, with information on everything from what qualities to look for to what one can expect to pay.
You can get a deep research report on the latest news in your field of work, or an industry snapshot or market status for an area of interest. From best practices to price comparisons, from strategies to future potential, the information is packaged in a shockingly short time. If you were to manually look for the information, it would take hours or even days.
Amazingly, you can even research a person if that individual is prominent enough online. This could come in useful if you're, say, trying to hire and want to verify claims made in a CV.
In your personal life, too, deep research can make life easier. A comparison of fridge models when you want to buy one. A detailed description of a place you are planning to visit, including cultural notes and how to prepare for a stay there. With Google's Gemini, there's the additional benefit of being able to get the report in a neat package that can be immediately shared, sent to Google Docs, or converted to an audio overview so you can listen to a shorter version of the report while doing other things, if you like.
Some of the more odd things I've got reports on include how to stop myself from singing nasally, how to perform soleus push-ups, and the making of the aircraft HA300, which my father test-flew in Egypt.

Of course, AI is notorious for making errors and dreaming up content. Just this morning, Grok referred to US President Donald Trump as the 'former US president'. But the good news is that this tendency is much less in research reports. There's no user interaction to encourage the AI assistant to be sycophantic and make up data.
All the same, the more critical the information, the more important it is to cross-check whatever looks wrong. The sources are given, and in some cases, citations are given with each chunk of information. Checking is a little tedious, but it beats doing the whole thing yourself over days.

Alphabet's Google and OpenAI said their artificial-intelligence models won gold medals at a global mathematics competition, signaling a breakthrough in math capabilities in the race to build powerful systems that can rival human intelligence. The results marked the first time that AI systems crossed the gold-medal scoring threshold at the International Mathematical Olympiad for high-school students. Both companies' models solved five out of six problems, achieving the result using general-purpose "reasoning" models that processed mathematical concepts using natural language, in contrast to the previous approaches used by AI firms. The achievement suggests AI is less than a year away from being used by mathematicians to crack unsolved research problems at the frontier of the field, according to Junehyuk Jung, a math professor at Brown University and visiting researcher in Google's DeepMind AI unit. "I think the moment we can solve hard reasoning problems in natural language will enable the potential for collaboration between AI and mathematicians," Jung told Reuters. OpenAI's breakthrough was achieved with a new experimental model centered on massively scaling up "test-time compute." This was done by both allowing the model to "think" for longer periods and deploying parallel computing power to run numerous lines of reasoning simultaneously, according to Noam Brown, researcher at OpenAI. Brown declined to say how much in computing power it cost OpenAI, but called it "very expensive." To OpenAI researchers, it is another clear sign that AI models can command extensive reasoning capabilities that could expand into other areas beyond math. The optimism is shared by Google researchers, who believe AI models' capabilities can apply to research quandaries in other fields such as physics, said Jung, who won an IMO gold medal as a student in 2003. Google's DeepMind AI unit last year achieved a silver medal score using AI systems specialized for math. This year, Google used a general-purpose model called Gemini Deep Think, a version of which was previously unveiled at its annual developer conference in May. Unlike previous AI attempts that relied on formal languages and lengthy computation, Google's approach this year operated entirely in natural language and solved the problems within the official 4.5-hour time limit, the company said in a blog post. OpenAI, which has its own set of reasoning models, similarly built an experimental version for the competition, according to a post by researcher Alexander Wei on social media platform X. He noted that the company does not plan to release anything with this level of math capability for several months. This year marked the first time the competition coordinated officially with some AI developers, who have for years used prominent math competitions like IMO to test model capabilities. IMO judges certified the results of those companies, including Google, and asked them to publish results on July 28. "We respected the IMO Board's original request that all AI labs share their results only after the official results had been verified by independent experts and the students had rightly received the acclamation they deserved," Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said on X on Monday. OpenAI, which published its results on Saturday and first claimed gold-medal status, said in an interview that it had permission from an IMO board member to do so after the closing ceremony on Saturday. The competition on Monday allowed cooperating companies to publish results, Gregor Dolinar, president of IMO's board, told Reuters.

UK and ChatGPT maker OpenAI sign new strategic partnership
Britain and ChatGPT maker OpenAI have signed a new strategic partnership to deepen collaboration on AI security research and explore investing in British AI infrastructure, such as data centres, the government said on Monday. 'AI will be fundamental in driving the change we need to see across the country – whether that's in fixing the NHS (National Health Service), breaking down barriers to opportunity or driving economic growth,' Peter Kyle, secretary of state for technology, said in a statement. 'This can't be achieved without companies like OpenAI, who are driving this revolution forward internationally. This partnership will see more of their work taking place in the UK.' The government has set out plans to invest 1 billion pounds in computing infrastructure for AI development, hoping to increase public compute capacity 20 fold over the next five years. The United States, China and India are emerging as front runners in the race to develop AI, putting pressure on Europe to catch up. The partnership with OpenAI, whose tie-up with Microsoft once drew the scrutiny of Britain's competition regulator, will see the company possibly increase the size of its London office, and explore where it can deploy AI in areas such as justice, defence, security and education technology. In the same statement, OpenAI head Sam Altman praised the government for being the first to recognise the technology's potential through its ' AI Opportunities Action Plan ' – an initiative by Prime Minister Keir Starmer to turn the UK into an artificial intelligence superpower. The Labour government, which has struggled to increase economic growth meaningfully in its first year in power and has since fallen behind in polls, has said that the technology could increase productivity by 1.5% a year, worth an extra 47 billion pounds ($63.37 billion) annually over a decade.
