UK and ChatGPT maker OpenAI sign new strategic partnership
'AI will be fundamental in driving the change we need to see across the country – whether that's in fixing the NHS (National Health Service), breaking down barriers to opportunity or driving economic growth,' Peter Kyle, secretary of state for technology, said in a statement.
'This can't be achieved without companies like OpenAI, who are driving this revolution forward internationally. This partnership will see more of their work taking place in the UK.'
The government has set out plans to invest 1 billion pounds in computing infrastructure for AI development, hoping to increase public compute capacity 20 fold over the next five years.
The United States, China and India are emerging as front runners in the race to develop AI, putting pressure on Europe to catch up.
The partnership with OpenAI, whose tie-up with Microsoft once drew the scrutiny of Britain's competition regulator, will see the company possibly increase the size of its London office, and explore where it can deploy AI in areas such as justice, defence, security and education technology.

AI Opportunities Action Plan
' – an initiative by Prime Minister Keir Starmer to turn the UK into an artificial intelligence superpower.
The Labour government, which has struggled to increase economic growth meaningfully in its first year in power and has since fallen behind in polls, has said that the technology could increase productivity by 1.5% a year, worth an extra 47 billion pounds ($63.37 billion) annually over a decade.

Tata Communications on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) said it has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deploy an advanced, AI-ready long-distance network across India. The project, which is likely to involve a capital investment of about ₹430 crore from Tata Communications, is expected to be completed by the end of FY26, according to a regulatory filing. The collaboration will establish a new high-capacity, long-distance network to connect three AWS infrastructure locations to boost generative AI adoption and cloud innovation in India, it said. "The collaboration marks one of India's largest ever network deployments by Tata Communications in terms of size, scale and bandwidth. AWS has two data centre regions in India, located in Mumbai and Hyderabad, and AWS Direct Connect and AWS Edge Network infrastructure in Chennai. "The network will connect AWS infrastructure in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai through a comprehensive, national long-haul network, creating a powerful infrastructure backbone for AI and machine learning (ML) workloads across India," it said. The new network -- one of India's largest ever deployments by Tata Communications -- will have a capacity of 7.2 Tbps with a cable length of 18,000 km. It will utilise Tata Communications' network connectivity to provide low-latency, high-bandwidth connections, enabling businesses across India to build, train, and deploy scalable AI applications, as per the filing. "The infrastructure is designed to support the most data intensive workloads, like 5G, generative AI, and highperformance computing. This collaboration with Tata Communications will further enable our customers in India to innovate at scale with cloud and generative AI, and drive growth in India's rapidly expanding digital economy," Jesse Dougherty, Vice President for Network Edge Services at AWS, said.

India-UK free trade pact gets cabinet nod, signing set for 24 July in London
New Delhi: The Union cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved the India-UK free trade agreement, paving the way for the much-awaited formal signing of the pact during Modi's visit to London on 24 July, said two government officials, asking not to be identified. Advertisement The agreement, aimed at boosting goods and services trade between the two countries, will be signed by commerce minister Piyush Goyal and his British counterpart Jonathan Reynolds in the presence of Modi and British prime minister Keir Starmer, as per the first official, who is involved in preparations for the signing ceremony. Modi begins a four-day trip on Wednesday that will take him to the UK and the Maldives, with the signing of the free trade agreement (FTA) in London expected to be a key highlight. India and the UK had concluded negotiations for the deal on 6 May after more than two years of talks.
