UK and ChatGPT maker OpenAI sign new strategic partnership

Indian Express18 hours ago
Britain and ChatGPT maker OpenAI have signed a new strategic partnership to deepen collaboration on AI security research and explore investing in British AI infrastructure, such as data centres, the government said on Monday.
'AI will be fundamental in driving the change we need to see across the country – whether that's in fixing the NHS (National Health Service), breaking down barriers to opportunity or driving economic growth,' Peter Kyle, secretary of state for technology, said in a statement.
'This can't be achieved without companies like OpenAI, who are driving this revolution forward internationally. This partnership will see more of their work taking place in the UK.'
The government has set out plans to invest 1 billion pounds in computing infrastructure for AI development, hoping to increase public compute capacity 20 fold over the next five years.
The United States, China and India are emerging as front runners in the race to develop AI, putting pressure on Europe to catch up.
The partnership with OpenAI, whose tie-up with Microsoft once drew the scrutiny of Britain's competition regulator, will see the company possibly increase the size of its London office, and explore where it can deploy AI in areas such as justice, defence, security and education technology.
In the same statement, OpenAI head Sam Altman praised the government for being the first to recognise the technology's potential through its '
AI Opportunities Action Plan
' – an initiative by Prime Minister Keir Starmer to turn the UK into an artificial intelligence superpower.
The Labour government, which has struggled to increase economic growth meaningfully in its first year in power and has since fallen behind in polls, has said that the technology could increase productivity by 1.5% a year, worth an extra 47 billion pounds ($63.37 billion) annually over a decade.

Tata Communications to build AI-led network for AWS in India; capital investment at ₹430 crore

Tata Communications on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) said it has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deploy an advanced, AI-ready long-distance network across India. The project, which is likely to involve a capital investment of about ₹430 crore from Tata Communications, is expected to be completed by the end of FY26, according to a regulatory filing. The collaboration will establish a new high-capacity, long-distance network to connect three AWS infrastructure locations to boost generative AI adoption and cloud innovation in India, it said. "The collaboration marks one of India's largest ever network deployments by Tata Communications in terms of size, scale and bandwidth. AWS has two data centre regions in India, located in Mumbai and Hyderabad, and AWS Direct Connect and AWS Edge Network infrastructure in Chennai. "The network will connect AWS infrastructure in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai through a comprehensive, national long-haul network, creating a powerful infrastructure backbone for AI and machine learning (ML) workloads across India," it said. The new network -- one of India's largest ever deployments by Tata Communications -- will have a capacity of 7.2 Tbps with a cable length of 18,000 km. It will utilise Tata Communications' network connectivity to provide low-latency, high-bandwidth connections, enabling businesses across India to build, train, and deploy scalable AI applications, as per the filing. "The infrastructure is designed to support the most data intensive workloads, like 5G, generative AI, and highperformance computing. This collaboration with Tata Communications will further enable our customers in India to innovate at scale with cloud and generative AI, and drive growth in India's rapidly expanding digital economy," Jesse Dougherty, Vice President for Network Edge Services at AWS, said.

‘Obama tried coup': Trump slams ex-US president; dodges Epstein question

. US president Donald Trump on Tuesday accused former president Barack Obama of leading a coup against him in 2016. While hosting Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr at the White House, president Trump was asked a question about Jeffrey Epstein, which he brushed aside. Instead, he accused Obama of trying to interfere in the 2016 election. Trump called the Epstein investigation a 'witch hunt' and said the real issue was Obama's alleged role in a plot to undermine his victory against Hillary Clinton. 'The witch hunt you should be talking about is they caught president Obama, absolutely cold,' Trump said, before making a series of claims. The US president said he wanted the US department of justice to launch a criminal investigation into Obama. He told reporters that Obama, along with Hillary Clinton and others, tried to undermine American democracy. "We found absolute -- this isn't like 'evidence' or like -- this is proof, irrefutable proof that Obama was seditious, that Obama was trying to lead a coup, and with Hillary Clinton and all these other people, but Obama headed it up. This is the biggest scandal in the history of our country. It really goes on even to the autopen." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Big Tummy? He claimed the Democrats paid $12 million to former British spy Christopher Steele for a report he called fake. He also said the report included false claims that media houses refused to print before the election. Trump claimed he had strong documentation, and said intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard told him more documents would be released soon. Trump linked the alleged conspiracy to the 2020 presidential election, which he again described as 'rigged'. Trump also accused the January 6 committee of destroying evidence that could have revealed wrongdoing.

India-UK free trade pact gets cabinet nod, signing set for 24 July in London

New Delhi: The Union cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved the India-UK free trade agreement, paving the way for the much-awaited formal signing of the pact during Modi's visit to London on 24 July, said two government officials, asking not to be identified. Advertisement The agreement, aimed at boosting goods and services trade between the two countries, will be signed by commerce minister Piyush Goyal and his British counterpart Jonathan Reynolds in the presence of Modi and British prime minister Keir Starmer, as per the first official, who is involved in preparations for the signing ceremony. Modi begins a four-day trip on Wednesday that will take him to the UK and the Maldives, with the signing of the free trade agreement (FTA) in London expected to be a key highlight. India and the UK had concluded negotiations for the deal on 6 May after more than two years of talks. Advertisement India is set to benefit from a zero-duty regime for crucial labour-intensive exports such as textiles, leather goods, and footwear, while the UK will see tariff reductions on luxury items such as Scotch whisky and premium cars. UK Parliament must ratify The pact, which also includes chapters on services, innovation, government procurement, intellectual property rights and anti-corruption, will come into effect after it is ratified by the UK Parliament, which may take another six months. As per practice, the agreement will be signed by the commerce ministers of both countries, but officials said the Prime Minister's presence will add political significance to the event. The pact will mark India's first major bilateral trade agreement with a developed Western economy since the Modi government accelerated its FTA agenda -- part of a wider strategy to diversify export markets and attract investments. Advertisement Also read | India-UK FTA talks likely to resume only next year to resolve pending issues 'This deal has a strategic significance beyond trade, especially at a time when India is recalibrating its global economic partnerships and the talks with US for a bilateral trade agreement is in progress,' said the first officials, who was involved in the talks. Separately, India and the UK have also concluded negotiations on a social security agreement—called the Double Contribution Convention—that will allow Indian professionals working in Britain on short-term assignments to avoid paying into both countries' social security systems. The FTA does not include the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) —the so-called carbon tax—at this stage, but both officials said it will be taken up for discussions later. Advertisement India's merchandise exports to the UK rose 12.6% to $14.5 billion in 2024-25, while imports grew marginally by 2.3% to $8.6 billion. The total bilateral trade stood at $21.34 billion in 2023-24, up from $20.36 billion in the previous year.
