Green parking: more than just a parking space
At the core of the project are the so-called 'green parking lots'—versatile structures that provide shade, lower ambient temperatures, and contribute meaningfully to reduce urban overheating. These areas incorporate climate-resilient vegetation, permeable surfaces, and rainwater collection systems.
Green parking units can be easily integrated into residential neighborhoods, public squares, or commercial areas. Beyond their functional purpose, they improve urban aesthetics, reduce pollution, and help manage rainwater, contributing to the reduction of local flooding risks. In addition, green areas can be a good support for urban biodiversity, for various species of native birds.
The system is designed to function without requiring major changes to existing infrastructure, making it an ideal option for city administrations seeking fast, effective, and scalable interventions.

'What sets this project apart is that it has moved beyond the design phase. We are no longer just planning—it's already being implemented,' Valentin Rusu, Founder of Green Parking Solutions, explains.
'Our aim was to offer a concrete solution that could be tested and replicated quickly, moving beyond preliminary concepts. These structures are durable, easy to maintain, and most importantly, they deliver measurable outcomes—especially during periods of extreme summer heat,' he added.
Cities need action, not just strategies
Urban heat islands—areas where city temperatures are significantly higher than those of surrounding rural regions—are becoming an increasingly common challenge across Europe and beyond. Concrete, asphalt, and buildings absorb and retain more heat than vegetation or soil, and the lack of green spaces limits the natural cooling capacity of cities. As a result, residents face thermal discomfort, energy consumption for cooling increases, and air quality deteriorates—leading to potential health issues.
In this context, integrating green parking infrastructure emerges as an immediate and effective solution.
Complementary to long-term strategies, there is a pressing need for practical, visible interventions—especially in pedestrian areas, parking lots, and public transport zones.

AUC CELEBRATES THE GRADUATION OF THE INAUGURAL COHORT OF EGYPT'S FIRST FILM INDUSTRY BUSINESS CERTIFICATE

Basant Ahmed The American University in Cairo's (AUC) School of Continuing Education (SCE) announced the graduation of the first cohort of the Film Industry Business Certificate, launched this summer in partnership with the international Silver Screen Film School in Romania. The program is the first of its kind in Egypt which provides hands-on training in production, marketing, budgeting, distribution and film financing, equipping participants with the business skills needed to succeed in today's rapidly evolving film industry. Courses were taught by award-winning filmmakers and producers from Silver Screen Film School alongside AUC business experts. 'The certificate bridges a long-standing gap in film education, merging creativity with the vital business skills needed to thrive in the film industry,' said Mahmoud Allam, dean of SCE. 'We're proud to introduce a program that speaks directly to the needs of aspiring filmmakers, producers, marketers and entrepreneurs across the region. This collaboration is a strong example of how SCE continues to connect education to emerging market needs.' Participants in the inaugural cohort included aspiring producers, marketers and creative entrepreneurs. They learned and received training on how to pitch projects, manage financing, navigate distribution and build personal brands using AI tools. Speaking about their experience and why did they pick this program, several graduates noted that it was unique and different because it does not focus only on the creative and artistic side, but teaches film students how to turn ideas into real projects. Yasmine Waali, filmmaker and a graduate of the program, said, 'When I heard about the certificate, I was really excited. I had studied filmmaking, but never learned the business side formally. I picked it up through experience at festivals and production houses. As filmmakers, we truly need this knowledge.' Similarly, Rehab Elghatrifi, a TV director and another graduate of the program noted, 'The organizers were incredibly supportive, and the mentors — especially in production, marketing and film distribution — exceeded my expectations. You truly brought in the best people, and they shared their knowledge so generously.' Mariam Hamdy '06, '14, co-founder of the Silver Screen Film School alongside Octavian Dăncilă, a Romanian senior film programmer noted that the program is designed not just for emerging talent, but also for anyone who didn't previously have access to this kind of specialized film education, whether they're shifting careers or reigniting a passion. Hamdy added that the program aims to fill a gap in the market and respond to a growing niche within the film industry. 'This program is designed to combine world-class mentorship from both Silver Screen and SCE's strength in applied learning and professional development,' said Doaa Salem, senior director of outreach and partnerships at AUC's SCE. Madbouly tours northwestern coast to open AOI Expo, promote desalination-driven agriculture

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly began a tour of Egypt's northwestern coast on Saturday, starting with a visit to development and service projects in New Alamein City. Madbouly explained that the tour aims to follow up on strategic projects designed to enhance the region's investment value and economic potential. He noted that the area's rich tourism, agricultural, and industrial resources are being leveraged through the establishment of new urban communities and greater private sector involvement. As part of his visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) exhibition at North Square Mall in New Alamein, featuring products from ATICO Wood Industries and AOI's electronics factory. Accompanied by AOI Chairperson Mokhtar Abdel Latif, Madbouly toured the 650 sqm showroom, which presents Egyptian-made products under the theme 'Made in Egypt,' including electronic and household appliances, security systems, and modern wooden furnishings. Abdel Latif explained that the exhibition is part of AOI's broader marketing strategy to deliver high-quality, environmentally friendly, locally manufactured products aligned with the latest digital transformation trends. During the visit to AOI's wood products section (ATICO), Madbouly was briefed by Sherif Raafat, Executive Director of ATICO Wood Industries. Raafat showcased the variety of furniture on display and announced a partnership agreement with Romanian company Antares to manufacture office chairs and sofas locally in Egypt. He also highlighted the availability of attractive installment plans in AOI showrooms and a special public lottery for attendees of the opening event to win valuable prizes. While inspecting the exhibition, Madbouly examined several pieces of home and office furniture to check their quality and durability. The exhibition includes televisions, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, fans, microwaves, receivers, LED lighting systems, surveillance cameras, computers, tablets, laptops, and mobile phones. Abdel Latif noted that, to mark the exhibition's launch, all products will be available at discounts of up to 50% for one week. As part of his visit to the Northwestern Coast, the Prime Minister also inspected the Research Pilot Plant for Seawater Desalination in New Alamein City. Madbouly reaffirmed the state's commitment to seawater desalination as a central pillar of sustainable development, emphasizing the importance of applying advanced technologies to boost efficiency and production. He highlighted the significance of ongoing research using desalinated seawater to cultivate various fruits and vegetables, describing it as a step toward maximizing the agricultural potential of coastal areas and expanding arable land to enhance food security. During his tour, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Sherif El-Sherbiny presented details of the research desalination plant's capabilities. He also explained ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation to conduct agricultural trials using desalinated water. El-Sherbiny noted that the Agricultural Research Center and the Desert Research Center are conducting studies on soil and water, and developing crop patterns for low-water-demand, short-cycle crops—particularly fruits and vegetables suited to the region's climate—as well as some strategic field crops. He added that the success of these experiments could open new avenues for agricultural investment in the North Coast, transforming parts of New Alamein into modern agricultural hubs using water-efficient irrigation and farming technologies based on desalinated seawater. Hossam Shawky, Head of the Desert Research Center, also presented several proposed crop combinations suitable for cultivation with desalinated seawater, along with their estimated water consumption rates.
