Orioles tag Blue Jays for 16 hits in series-opening win
Cedric Mullins and Coby Mayo belted back-to-back home runs and Adley Rutschman had a big game at the plate in his first game off the injured list as the Baltimore Orioles rapped the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 11-4 on Monday night.
Ramon Laureano and Colton Cowser also homered and Jordan Westburg joined Rutschman and Mayo with three hits. Baltimore had 16 hits in the first of four meetings between the teams across three days.
Corbin Martin (1-0) was the winning pitcher with 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief. It marked his second victory in the major leagues, and his first since 2019.
Bo Bichette had four hits, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Nathan Lukes each hit home runs for the Blue Jays, who've lost two games in a row for the first time since the All-Star break.
The Orioles, who've won four of their last five games, tagged Toronto starter Chris Bassitt (11-5) for six runs in 2 1/3 innings. He had gone 4-0 in his first four starts in July.
Baltimore starter Zach Eflin lasted 4 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Lukes and Guerrero Jr. both hit their home runs in the third inning.
Rutschman's two-run double in the bottom of the third inning broke a tie to put Baltimore up 5-3. Laureano singled in the next run.
Laureano's 15th homer of the season was a two-run shot in the fifth for a 9-4 advantage. Mullins also has 15 long balls this year. Ryan O'Hearn and Mullins also had two hits.
Baltimore relievers blanked the Blue Jays across the last five innings.
The series pits the AL East Division-leading Blue Jays against the last-place Orioles. The teams meet in a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday.

Blue Jays bid to get back on track in opener vs. Rockies
(Photo credit: Mitch Stringer-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays have stumbled a bit since soaring to the top of the American League East by winning 19 of 23 games. Toronto has lost six of its last eight contests to see its lead in the division dwindle to three games. The Blue Jays can turn things around when they begin a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night in Denver. Left-hander Eric Lauer (6-2, 2.68 ERA) will start for the Blue Jays in the opener against Colorado right-hander Tanner Gordon (2-3, 4.85). Gordon, who has yet to face Toronto in his career, will make his third start since being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on July 23. Lauer has become a vital part of the Blue Jays' rotation after beginning the season in the minors. He began his career with San Diego in 2018 and was part of Milwaukee's playoff run in 2021 -- he also excelled there in 2022 -- but he struggled after that. Lauer dealt with arm and shoulder injuries and didn't pitch in the majors in 2024. He was recalled by the Blue Jays in late April after injuries thinned their pitching staff, and he has provided an impact. Lauer has appeared in 17 games (11 starts) and has been a fixture in the rotation since June 11. He has allowed more than two runs on two occasions in his starts -- and no more than three runs -- and is 4-1 since becoming a full-time starter. 'I think I've really taken advantage of the spots that I've been put into,' Lauer said recently. 'That was my game plan the whole time. Show what I can do, hopefully edge my way into the rotation as a permanent spot.' He has faced the Rockies 12 times in his career but has struggled in those outings. He is 1-6 with a 7.58 ERA against them, and his record in Denver is worse -- 0-6 with a 12.73 ERA in seven starts. Lauer will face the worst team in baseball but one that is feeling confident. Colorado, despite having just 30 wins, is 8-7 since the All-Star break and 6-3 at home in that stretch. The Rockies are coming off a 9-5 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday but rallied to win the first two games of the series. Colorado has averaged seven runs over the last nine home games. One of the offensive sparks has been outfielder Jordan Beck, who batted .455 with two home runs and six RBIs in the series win against the Pirates. He has raised his average from .264 to .279 over the last 15 games. Beck has reached base in 16 of the last 19 games, and his .314 average in 23 games in July has coincided with Colorado's recent surge. The Rockies won't reach the postseason but are on pace to avoid setting the record for most losses (121) in the modern era. 'The All-Star break was a good reset for us,' Beck said. 'We came back in the second half, even after the trades and stuff happened, and felt like, 'All right, we got what we got. Let's do it.''

The first Group F game at Imphal's Khuman Lampak stadium kicks off at 4.00 pm Indian Standard Time (IST) while the second, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata, is scheduled for a 7.00 pm kick-off. TRAU and Kashmir look for first win Both TRAU FC and Real Kashmir FC, will be looking to register their first win of the tournament to keep their hopes of knockout qualification alive, after the former was held to a 1-1 draw against city rivals Neroca FC and the latter went down 1-2 to the Indian Navy in their first Group F game a few days back. TRAU fielding an all-India side under Thangjam Saran Singh, came up with an inspired display in the Imphal derby and even took the lead when right back Raj, on the overlap, curled one in viciously from the flank. An unfortunate red card to winger Dhanachandra, however, meant that they had to defend that lead for almost the last 30 minutes with just 10 men. Neroca equalised in the dying minutes, denying them three points. The Snow Leopards on the other hand, appearing in the tournament after a gap of six years, looked a bit undercooked under Ishfaque Ahmed against a settled and much improved Indian Navy side, going down eventually by the odd goal in three. Their new African recruits did combine well for the equalising goal, and they did look to be getting better every minute. Ishfaque will be hoping that a tighter defence on Monday against TRAU can help them register a first tournament win. Mohun Bagan look for second win against BSF In the second game in Kolkata, Mohun Bagan Super Giants will be looking to set up a group topper deciding clash against debutants Diamond Harbour FC, with a second tournament win over BSF FT, who were totally outplayed 1-8 in their opener against the I-League 2 champions. Bagan opened with a 3-1 win over fellow city giants Mohammedan Sporting, despite playing with 10 men for the majority of the match. India international Liston Colaco came up with a champagne performance, scoring twice and assisting in the other, and Bastab Roy's side seems to have too much quality for the Border Guards. With DHFC sitting on two wins and with a big positive goal difference, Bagan will carry the pressure of not only having to win but to win big, in order to carry confidence and momentum into the clash against DHFC. Whatever the results, both games on Monday are likely to have a significant effect on who tops that particular group going forward. Surprise! There's been quite a bit of parity in the race for baseball's best record
The 2025 regular season was supposed to be about Dodger dominance. Instead, the race for baseball's best record has turned into a free for all. If there were any concerns about a Los Angeles behemoth running roughshod over the sport, that hasn't materialized so far. In fact, eight different teams have spent the past three months passing baseball's best record around like a hot potato. The race for the top record in the major leagues is in many ways symbolic. Home field advantage in the postseason isn't quite the prize it is in the NFL or NBA, and there's no Presidents' Trophy given for regular-season excellence like in the NHL. But the number of teams that have taken a turn at the top is noteworthy. Since May 1, the Dodgers, Tigers, Padres, Mets, Phillies, Cubs, Brewers and Blue Jays have all held the best record at some point. Five of those teams have held the top spot in an even more recent span — since July 1. Since the American League and National League began expanding significantly in 1961, this is only the fifth time at least eight teams have held (or tied for) the best record in baseball through games of May 1 or later, according to Sportrader. One of those seasons was 2020, when the whole 60-game schedule was after that date. The others were 1963 (eight teams), 1982 (eight) and 2021 (nine). The largest lead any team has been able to open on the rest of the majors — all season — is when Detroit was three games up for a few days shortly before the All-Star break. Pittsburgh led 16-10 before allowing two in the eighth and five in the bottom of the ninth. Brenton Doyle hit a two-run homer to win it 17-16 for Colorado, which had a win probability of 0.5% in the eighth according to Baseball Savant. The Rockies are the only team this season to win after falling nine runs behind, and they continue to make progress in their effort to avoid matching or breaking the modern record for losses set by the Chicago White Sox last year.
