India A Soft Target In Trump's Negotiations With Putin: Former Singapore Foreign Minister

News18a day ago
George Yeo Yong-Boon also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a 'strong leader' who has 'done a lot of good work for India'
Former foreign minister of Singapore George Yeo Yong-Boon offered a nuanced perspective on current global geopolitics in an interview with CNN-News18 on Saturday, cautioning that negotiations for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine have reached a crucial point. Yeo highlighted the unpredictable nature of Donald Trump's foreign policy, stating that the US President 'wants to maximise his leverage in negotiation with Putin".
In this high-stakes dynamic, the minister warned that 'India is a soft target", due to its important but sometimes challenging relationship with the United States. He noted that Trump's tendency to 'change his mind all the time" makes a firm and united stance from India essential, even as he acknowledged the paramount importance of India's relationship with the US.
Pivoting to India's domestic political landscape, the former minister offered high praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He described Modi as a 'strong leader" who has 'done a lot of good work for India". The minister went on to underscore that India's vast and diverse nature necessitates strong leadership, without which the country would be 'scattered all over the place". Expressing a deep respect for Modi, he added that the Indian Prime Minister is a 'good friend of Singapore".
On regional and international matters, the former minister expressed his hope that Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping could 'find a common ground to the path of normalisation" for their bilateral relationship. He also shared his desire for India to 'take a stronger position on Gaza", a stance he qualified by noting his understanding of why India, much like China, has chosen not to get involved in the Ukraine conflict. Yeo also expressed his happiness to see India 'doing well under the strong leadership of PM Modi".

Union minister, J&K LG, dy CM thank PM Modi for another Vande Bharat train

Union minister Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha and deputy chief minister Surinder Choudhary thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday for sanctioning a Vande Bharat train to link the holy towns of Katra and Amritsar, and said the transport infrastructure, particularly in the railways, has witnessed unprecedented growth in the Union territory over the last 11 years. A security official stands guard outside a Vande Bharat Express train, which was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at Katra Railway station, in Reasi district on Sunday. (PTI) In Bengaluru, the PM on Sunday flagged off three Vande Bharat Express trains -- from Bengaluru to Belagavi, from Punjab's Amritsar to Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra in Jammu and Kashmir and from Nagpur (Ajni) to Pune. 'This (Katra-Amritsar) is the fourth Vande Bharat Express train gifted to Jammu and Kashmir by PM Modi, who has given top priority to this region ever since taking the reins of the government in 2014.... I do not know if there is any other railway station in the country where four Vande Bharat trains stop,' Singh told reporters on board the newly-launched train. He congratulated the people of Jammu for the new train and said when Modi took over as the PM in 2014, the railway project to connect Kashmir with the rest of the country was almost abandoned. The LG thanked the PM for the Vande Bharat train between Amritsar and Katra. 'Grateful to PM Modi for flagging off Vande Bharat Train between Amritsar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Station. J&K's transport infrastructure, particularly in railways, has witnessed unprecedented growth under the leadership of PM. New Vande Bharat Train will ensure ease of travel for devotees of Mata Vaishno Devi and spur the growth momentum of the local economy,' he said in a post on X. Referring to the first freight train reaching the Anantnag station in south Kashmir from Punjab on Saturday, Sinha said it marks a significant milestone in the Kashmir valley's transport infrastructure and trade. Addressing the gathering before the flag-off ceremony at the Katra railway station, deputy chief minister Choudhary lauded Modi for making the dream of railway connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country a reality. 'We are lucky to witness the dreams that our elders saw getting fulfilled under the leadership of Modi. Our PM and chief minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the first train from Katra to Kashmir (on June 6) -- a historic moment as many were of the opinion that the train could never reach Kashmir, which was infamous for terror activities. But the region has witnessed fast development,' he said. He welcomed the launch of the new Vande Bharat train service between Katra and Amritsar and said it is a proud moment for people as the train is going to connect two revered shrines -- the Vaishno Devi temple and the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Pro-Khalistan protest fails to disrupt consular camp in Canada

While pro-Khalistan protesters gathered at a distance, the first consular camp organised by an Indian mission in Canada this year went off without disruption at a gurdwara in British Columbia on Saturday. The camp was held at the Khalsa Diwan Society's gurdwara in the city of Abbotsford. According to an earlier press release from the Indian consulate in Vancouver, applications for passport services, overseas citizen of India (OCI) and attestation were to be accepted during the camp. Pro-Khalistan radicals violently attacked the Hindu Sabha Mandir, in Brampton, in November, as it hosted a consular camp. (File) Pro-Khalistan elements had given a call for a protest at the camp but were kept at a distance of 50 metres from the gurdwara as it had obtained a court order in this regard last week, a spokesperson for the Society told the Hindustan Times. The camp was organised at the request of the gurdwara as the local community sought a convenient venue for processing of documentation required for traveling to India, he added. The gurdwara will also host a life certificate camp for seniors later this year. Just a few protesters gathered and raised anti-India slogans. Last year, the consular camps drew pro-Khalistan protesters and resulted in disruption of the services and even violence. Matters flared up when protesting radicals violently attacked the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton in the Greater Toronto Area or GTA on November 3, leading to multiple arrests connected to that episode and its aftermath. Local police warned against holding similar such camps due to tense situations leading to multiple cancellations, including by three temples last month. However, camps were successfully hosted by the Khalsa Diwan Society-run gurdwaras in Vancouver, which applied for and received a court order restraining protesters, as did the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir in Toronto. The call for protests targeting the camp on Saturday was circulated online in a poster that also featured India's consul general in Vancouver Masakui Rungsung. The posters and the protesters referred to the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18, 2023. Relations between India and Canada cratered three months later when the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated in the House of Commons that there were 'credible allegations' of a potential link between Indian agents and the murder. India described those accusations as 'absurd' and 'motivated.' The situation worsened in October 2024 after the Canadian government accused six Indian diplomats and officials of being linked to violent criminal activity in the country. That led to India withdrawing the six from Canada on October 14 and expelling six Canadian diplomats.
