Gold selloff on jobs euphoria is misguided? Peter Schiff says rebound coming
The sharp drop in
gold prices
and concurrent rally in equities following the May
U.S. jobs report
on Friday reflect a misreading of economic fundamentals and will likely unwind, according to economist
Peter Schiff
. The longtime gold advocate said investors are overreacting to headline payroll figures while ignoring signs of underlying labour market weakness.
In a post on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), Schiff wrote, "The stock market is the tail that wags the dog. The labor market is weak. But since the headline number in the May jobs report was not as weak as expected, the stock market rose. As a result, traders bought dollars and sold gold. Those trades will reverse as the headlines fade."

Stocks gain, gold slides
U.S. stocks closed higher on Friday, buoyed by a modest upside surprise in
nonfarm payrolls
, which showed 139,000 jobs added in May, ahead of consensus estimates of 130,000. April's job gains were revised down to 147,000. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%, in line with forecasts.
Live Events
The upbeat reaction sent the S&P 500 above the 6,000 mark for the first time since February 21, while technology stocks led gains and Tesla rebounded from its previous session's losses.
The data also prompted traders to reassess the timeline for
Federal Reserve rate cuts
, with expectations now pointing to a single reduction in September, rather than an earlier move. This recalibration sent the dollar higher and weighed on gold.
Spot gold fell 1.27% to $3,310.58 an ounce on Friday, while U.S. gold futures dropped 1.23% to $3,309.50.
'Those trades will reverse'
Schiff, a vocal critic of Fed policy and fiat currency weakness, argued that markets are reacting to surface-level data while the broader picture remains fragile. 'Those trades will reverse as the headlines fade,' he warned, suggesting that the rush into the dollar and out of gold will prove short-lived.
His latest remarks come just weeks after a separate post on X, in which he questioned why central banks around the world continue to accumulate gold rather than Bitcoin.
'If gold is the past and Bitcoin is the future, why are foreign central banks that are preparing for a future where the U.S. dollar is no longer the reserve currency, replacing their dollar reserves with gold and not Bitcoin?' Schiff asked in a May 27 post to his one million followers.
He has repeatedly pointed to record central bank bullion buying, now topping 1,000 metric tons annually, as evidence of deepening global distrust in the U.S. dollar and growing confidence in gold's role as a long-term reserve asset.
Gold's case remains intact
Despite recent price pressure, Schiff maintains that gold remains well-positioned amid geopolitical tensions, fiscal concerns, and an uncertain Fed path. He views the latest market reaction as a temporary divergence from long-term fundamentals, one that will fade as reality sets in.

With the Federal Reserve set to meet later this month, all eyes will be on updated projections and commentary that could either reinforce or undermine the narrative driving recent trades. For Schiff, though, the message is clear: the market's reaction to the jobs data is 'misguided,' and gold's rebound is only a matter of time.

Deported from US, bizman arrested in 30cr export fraud
New Delhi: Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police arrested Angad Pal Singh, a businessman, in connection with a massive Rs 30.47-crore export fraud involving forged foreign inward remittance certificates (FIRCs). Singh was taken into custody on June 2 after being deported from the US. Singh, who helped his father in the business of auto spare parts, was earlier arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation in another fraud case and was later handed over to EOW for his role in this export scam. Police said a case was registered in 2017 on the complaint of a private bank. The complainant reported that 467 fake FIRCs were submitted to the bank by their 18 account holders (17 firms) during the processing of their export documents. The fake FIRCs were for the period from Sept 26, 2013, to Oct 21, 2015. "Upon receipt of the FIRCs, the bank issued bank realisation certificates (BRCs) to the account holders, who availed trade (export) benefits from the office of Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the foreign trade policy. All these FIRCs, which ran into crores of rupees, were purportedly issued from a bank at Bhikaji Cama Place," police said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Amazon CFD : La clave para un ingreso extra (Conoce más) Empezar ahora Registrarse Undo Under the foreign trade policy, exporters are entitled to two key benefits: duty drawback and scrips. Duty drawback is directly credited to the exporter's account by the customs department once the goods are successfully exported through designated ports or depots. The second benefit, scrips, is provided by DGFT as an incentive for exporters, allowing exemption from import duties. "These scrips are issued only after the exporter receives payments and submits the necessary documents to an authorised dealer bank. Upon verification, the bank will issue a bank realisation certificate, which the exporter will present to DGFT to claim the benefits," police said. The investigation revealed that Singh, along with his father Surinder Singh and brother, owned five firms and managed the affairs of these companies with them. "They created forged FIRCs and obtained benefits of duty credit scrips worth Rs 30.47 crore and sold them in the open market," DCP (EOW) Vikram Porwal said. The remittance was shown to be received at a bank. They opened bank accounts in a private bank and processed the documents in conspiracy with bank employees. When the complaint was filed, they fled the country.

Honour job offers: AU to take undertaking from recruiters
Chennai: To avoid delays in onboarding of students and the rescinding of job offers by companies, Anna University is planning to get an undertaking from recruiters that they will honour the job offers issued during placement drive. Campus placement for an academic year generally starts around the end of July. Centre for University-Industry Collaboration is planning to invite more than 400 companies in 2025-26. "We are planning to take the undertaking as students are not allowed to sit for other placement interviews after accepting the job offer. If companies are not willing to recruit after giving offer letters, some students will miss out on joining top companies," said K Shanmuga Sundaram, director, Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC), Anna University. The university is taking this step as a precautionary measure as it plans to expand the number of recruiters from 230 companies this year to 400 companies next year by inviting new companies. It also selected student ambassadors to pitch the strengths of the individual departments to recruiters. "Student ambassadors have reached out to 40 new companies and are preparing presentations with the strength of their individual departments and skill sets students gained in the past six semesters," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sciatica & Back Pain? To increase the number of students bagging placement offers during 2025-26, the university is planning an eight-day placement training for 1,400 students on its four campuses. "We are planning to give placement training to all seventh-semester students from July 2 to 8. It will include soft skill training, communication training, preparing resumes, mock interviews, programming language, technical sessions, and group discussions," Shanmuga Sundaram said. The university is planning to train students from the first year onwards on foundational skills and emerging technology in the coming academic year to improve campus placement on its four campuses.

Pachpaoli Flyover: Debris & Red Tape
1 2 Nagpur: Even after seven weeks since the demolition of the decades-old Pachpaoli Flyover, which will be replaced by a new, longer one, it is yet to be completed because of the red tape. The flyover demolition was supposed to be completed within a month, but now it is not yet clear when it will be completed, as the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has still not received permission from railways to demolish the flyover over its two railway crossings. TOI recently visited the spot and witnessed that much of the Pachpaoli Flyover demolition was completed. However, the important part of the flyover over the level crossing 571 and 572, and between it, are yet to be demolished. According to NHAI officials, they sent the proposal to dismantle the flyover over the railway crossing to the railways. "For demolition of the flyover over the railway line, the traffic on the lines needs to be stopped. We have demanded five to six two-hour blocks and one three-hour block for the demolition work but are yet to receive the permission. Nagpur railways sent the proposal to Bilaspur, and it is pending from there," said an official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The NHAI official also added that until the flyover is demolished, they cannot start the work of two RuBs, proposed as part of the project, at both the railway lines. "Because of this dependent work, the timeline for the project is being affected," added the official. Earlier, the start of the Pachpaoli flyover demolition was delayed due to a lack of permission from the traffic department, who directed NHAI officials to take multiple measures so that traffic is not affected, and the railways, who too suggested some measures. Now, even after work started, its completion is stuck again. Pachpaoli flyover is being demolished for building of Kamal Chowk to Reshimbagh flyover, part of Rs998 crore project aimed at decongesting North & South Nagpur.
