16th Asian Shooting Championship: India, China to renew fight for continental supremacy

New Delhi [India], August 17 (ANI): As the first shots get ready to be fired at the 16th Asian Shooting Championship Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun, here's a run-down on how India's large 182-strong squad across the senior, junior and youth categories, can be tracked across the 12 competition days, beginning August 18, 2025 and running up to August 29, 2025, at Shymkent, Kazakhstan. A total of 182 Indian shooters, the championship's largest contingent, will compete in a total of 58 medal events, including 46 individual events and 12 mixed team events across categories and disciplines. Depending on the number of entries in each event, Indian shooters will also be in line for the team medals in all 46 individual events, as per a release from NRAI. While most of the contingent will be competing in Olympic events, many will also vie for glory in non-Olympic events like Centre-Fire, Standard and Free Pistol, Prone in Rifle and Double-Trap in the Shotgun discipline. A continental fight for supremacy: The Asian championship has long been a fight for continental supremacy, with China being the one to beat. India has caught up over the years, as they have at a global level, and the fight for the top spot on the medal tally is likely to be between the two. Hosts Kazakhstan have the second largest contingent after India with 111 entries, while Korea (70), China (41), Iran (29), Chinese Taipei (24) and Vietnam (20) have also fielded strong sides. Tough competition is also expected from the shooters from the Middle East, particularly in the Shotgun discipline. India had finished second behind China in the previous Asian Championship in Changwon with a total of 59 medals (21 gold, 22 silver and 16 bronze), while in the 14th Asian Championship in Doha, India had returned a fourth-place finish. Competitions will be held across individual, team and mixed team formats in all three disciplines and categories. - Seniors (Individual): Five athletes per National Olympic Committee (NOC), three to be registered to compete for medals. - Juniors (Individual): Six athletes per NOC, top three qualification ranks to enter final and compete for medals (two athletes to be <=18 yrs till 31st Dec, 2025). - Youth (Individual): Entries to be managed by Organising Committee (athletes to be <=18 years till 31st Dec, 2025). - Mixed Team: Two teams per event, only one highest ranked in qualification to compete for medals, two bronze medals to be awarded post two bronze medal matches (Rank 3 v Rank 5 & Rank 4 v Rank 6).

Bhatia's late birdies keep Tour Championship hopes alive

Maryland [US], August 17 (ANI): Akshay Bhatia kept his hopes of qualifying for the Tour Championship alive with a gritty finish at the BMW Championship. The Indian-American carded a 1-under 69 in the second round to move from tied-46th to tied-37th at the midway stage. With rounds of 75 and 69, Bhatia sits at 4-over for 36 holes, just outside the coveted Top-30 who advance to the season-ending finale, according to a release from BMW Championship. Bhatia, the Hero golfer, who finished sixth at last week's FedEx St. Jude Championship, endured a mixed round at Caves Valley. He dropped three bogeys against a lone birdie on the front nine and remained 1-over through 16 holes. However, he staged a late rally with clutch birdies on the last two holes--sinking putts from six and twelve feet--to rescue his round and remain in contention. Currently projected at 32nd in the FedEx Cup standings, he must climb into the Top-30 to secure a second consecutive Tour Championship berth. At the top, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre continued his blistering form. Following an opening 62 that included six straight birdies, he backed it up with a bogey-free 64 to reach 14-under 126. That gave him a commanding five-shot lead over World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (66-65) heading into the weekend. The 27-year-old MacIntyre, who won the RBC Canadian Open earlier this season, set a career-best 36-hole score and tied the largest halfway lead at the BMW Championship since Jason Day's five-shot advantage in 2015, when Day went on to win by six. Scheffler, despite a hot afternoon, maintained steady momentum with a 65, while Sweden's Ludvig Aberg surged with a 64 to sit six shots behind the leader. Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, remarkably bogey-free over 36 holes despite feeling unwell, posted a 64 and is in solo fourth, seven shots back. Michael Kim (66) and Tommy Fleetwood (69) shared fifth place, eight behind MacIntyre, while Rory McIlroy battled back from an early double bogey to sign for 66. The Northern Irishman trails by ten shots. (ANI)

Cricket-Former Australia captain and coach Simpson dies at 89

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Former Australia test captain Bob Simpson, who ushered in the country's modern-day golden era of cricket as its coach, has died aged 89, Cricket Australia said on Saturday. Simpson played 62 tests between 1957 and 1978, scoring 4,869 runs, including 10 hundreds, and claimed 71 wickets with his leg spin following his debut on a tour of South Africa. Simpson, one of the greatest slip fielders the game has ever seen, initially retired from the game in 1968 before returning as test captain at the age of 41 after several front-line Australian players had joined the World Series Cricket in 1977. "Bob Simpson was one of the greats of Australian cricket, and this is a sad day for anyone fortunate to have watched him play or who benefited from his wisdom," said Cricket Australia Chair Mike Baird. "As a brilliant opening batter, incredible slips fielder and handy spin bowler, Bob was a mainstay of a very strong Australian team in the 1960s, and he became a leader across the game as Australian and New South Wales captain and as a coach." "Bob's decision to come out of retirement to successfully lead the Australian team during the advent of World Series Cricket in 1977 was a wonderful service to the game, and his coaching set the foundation for a golden generation for Australian cricket." As coach, Simpson is credited with instilling discipline in an Australia side led by Allan Border, which went on to win the 1987 World Cup and regained both the Ashes and the Frank Worrell Trophy. Leg-spin great Shane Warne called Simpson the best coach he played under and someone who helped his development. Simpson also coached Lancashire and the Netherlands and worked as a consultant with the Indian team in the late 1990s. "Bob Simpson's extraordinary service to Australian cricket spanned generations," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wrote on X. "As a player, captain and then era-defining coach, he set the highest of standards for himself and the champions he led. He will be long remembered by the game he loved."
