Andhra MP serves Rs 100 crore defamation notice on brother Kesineni Nani

VIJAYAWADA: Kesineni Srinivas (Nani), former MP, has been served a legal notice by his brother and the sitting MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), demanding Rs 100 crore in damages for alleged defamation. The notice follows an open letter written by Nani to the Chief Minister, accusing Sivanath of orchestrating a fraudulent land deal worth Rs 3,000 crore involving Ursa Clusters Pvt Ltd.
The controversy revolves around the allotment of over 50 acres of prime land in Visakhapatnam to Ursa Clusters, a company reportedly set up just weeks before the deal. Critics, including Nani, questioned the company's credibility, alleging it lacks the experience or financial standing to justify such a significant land allotment.
Nani claimed that Sivanath, who also serves as the President of Andhra Cricket Association, is the hidden force behind the deal, using his political influence to secure the land under the guise of investment, potentially through benami ownership.
Nani, who represented Vijayawada for a decade as a TDP MP, before an unsuccessful run with the YSRCP in the 2024 elections, vowed to continue his battle against the alleged exploitation of public resources.
In a statement on X, he described the legal notice as an attempt to intimidate, silence and muzzle criticism, but affirmed his resolve to fight back with facts. He emphasised his commitment to transparency, drawing on his 10-year tenure as an MP, during which he claims to have served with integrity.

Unity in tribute: SAD factions, Punjab govt remember Longowal

1 2 3 4 5 6 Bathinda: Forty years after his assassination in 1985 over the Punjab Accord with then PM Rajiv Gandhi, Akali icon Harchand Singh Longowal was remembered on Wednesday, with opposing Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) factions and Punjab minister Aman Arora separately paying tributes on his 40th death anniversary. The outpouring to mark the death anniversary yet again underlined the popularity enjoyed by Longowal, who had come under criticism from several quarters in Punjab after he had signed the accord with Rajiv in the presence of Surjit Singh Barnala and Balwant Singh on July 24, 1985. Less than a month later, Longowal was gunned down at Gurdwara Akal Parkash at Sherpur in Sangrur, when he was addressing a conference of women on Aug 20, 1985. His assassination contributed to the formation of the Akali Dal govt led by Surjit Singh Barnala in Sept that year. On Wednesday, Punjab minister and AAP state president Arora led the state govt's tributes in Sangrur to what he described as "Longowal's commitment to peace, harmony and unity in Punjab over personal interests". A blood donation camp was also organised by Indian Red Cross Society at the local grain market. Arora highlighted that Longowal village, renowned as the land of 52 martyrs, held a sacred place in Punjab's history and assured that the govt would honour this legacy. During the event, Arora donated blood alongside deputy commissioner Sandeep Rishi, other officials and locals. Arora also laid the foundation stones for three projects in Longowal worth Rs 2.64 crore – Giani Gyan Singh Modern Library (Rs 1.5 crore), an aam aadmi mohalla clinic (Rs 25 lakh) and renovation of a pond under the Seechewal model (Rs 89 lakh). Arora was not the first state govt leader to pay tributes to Longowal. "Barnala began observing the death anniversary in 1986 as chief minister, and that practice has continued for 40 years," said Gobind Singh Longowal, a former Punjab minister and former president of SGPC. Gobind was an aide of Longowal. "Even some of those who initially called Longowal a traitor, after signing the accord, rallied behind him to share in his legacy and began observing his death anniversary," added Gobind. He added that after Parkash Singh Badal formed the govt in 1997, he started observing the death anniversary at the state level. "When former SGPC president Gurcharan Singh Tohra parted ways with Badal and formed Sarb Hind SAD, he observed the death anniversary too, so did Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann and others. When Congress formed the govt in 2002, Capt Amarinder Singh observed it for the first time at the state level, and Congress continued for five years. After Now, when another Akali Dal has been formed, it is there to pay tributes to Sant Longowal," said Gobind. On Wednesday, both SAD and its rebel faction paid tributes to Longowal. For SAD, president Sukhbir Singh Badal recalled Longowal's contribution. For the rebels, former Punjab minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa, whose father late Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa had worked with Longowal, recalled his contributions. "Carrying forward the legacy of Sant Longowal is our respective responsibility," said Barnala's son, Gaganjit Singh Barnala. People lose Rs 20,000 crore per year in online gaming: Data

Representative image NEW DELHI: Much against the arguments put forth by gaming companies against the ban on real-money gaming, the government estimates that around 45 crore people lose close to Rs 20,000 crore every year in online real-money gaming, according to data provided by an official source on Wednesday. The source said the government believes that online real-money gaming is turning into a "major problem for society," and decided to prioritise people's welfare over the revenue loss it will suffer on account of the ban. "There is a rough estimate that 45 crore people lose money every year. Total impact of the loss is estimated to be around Rs 20,000 crore," the source said, on a day when the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 was tabled and passed in the Lok Sabha. "Every parliamentarian has raised concerns about the ill effects of online gaming involving money. Between revenue from one-third of the industry segment and social welfare, the government has chosen welfare of society," the source said. The bill proposes to promote e-sports and online social gaming while banning money gaming in any form. "There will be a budget for it, and schemes and authority for their promotion. They comprise two-thirds of the industry. It will create job opportunities for the online gaming industry," the source said. Action under the bill against entities involved in money gaming will be taken mainly by state govts. Any person offering an online money gaming service in violation of stipulated provisions will face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine that may extend to Rs 1 crore, or both. The provisions also stipulate imprisonment of up to two years and/or a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh, or both, for those putting out advertisements in contravention of rules. Several online real-money gaming platforms "masquerade as game of skills" entities to differentiate themselves from gambling or betting, the source said. "Those who play the games are victims. They will not be punished as per the bill, but there will be action against those who provide real-money gaming platforms, facilitate transaction services, etc," the source said. The government has been making efforts for the last three-and-a-half years, which were being bypassed by the real-money gaming players. "Government tried to check it through GST, but it was being bypassed. There was a proposal for a regulatory body, but that was impacted by a conflict of interest. The provisions under the bill were drafted after several complaints were received from the public and their representatives," the source said.
