BBC News7 days ago
Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has renewed his contract with Barcelona until 2027.The Polish keeper, 35, had retired from football in August 2024, but signed for Barca two months later after first choice Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a season-ending injury. Szczesny won the La Liga and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona, who said that his contract was "recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context".Germany keeper Ter Stegen suffered a ruptured tendon in his knee in September 2024 and only returned to training in the final weeks of the 2024-25 season. Szczesny's new deal raises questions surrounding Ter Stegen's future at Barca after Barcelona also signed Joan Garcia from Espanyol in June, while 26-year-old Spanish keeper Inaki Pena is also on their books.Szczesny made 181 appearances for Arsenal after joining as a 16-year-old and also spent time at Brentford, Roma and Juventus. He joined Italian giants Juve in 2017 and made 252 appearances across seven years in Turin, winning three Serie A titles and lifting the Coppa Italia three times.Szczesny won 84 caps for Poland, playing at four European Championships and two World Cups.

Arsenal close in on £13m LaLiga star with medical expected this week as Mikel Arteta's summer spending spree continues

Arsenal are finalising terms on a deal with Valencia for centre-back Cristhian Mosquera. As Mail Sport reported on Sunday, talks advanced over the weekend and the 21-year old has agreed personal terms with Arsenal. He is expected to undergo a medical this week though the clubs are ironing out the final details on a £13 million fee with added bonus payments. Arsenal have been looking to add a defender to compete with William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. Mosquera can play at both centre-back and right-back and will fill the gap in the squad left by the departure of Takehiro Tomiyasu, who mutually agreed to terminate his contract. The Spain Under-21 international has made 90 appearances for Valencia and was a regular last season, playing the full match in 37 of the club's 38 La Liga games. Arsenal are finalising details with Sporting Lisbon for the transfer of Victor Gyokeres. Chelsea winger Noni Madueke is expected to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of his £52m move on Monday. Arsenal have already signed Martin Zubimendi from Real Socidead, Christian Norgaard from Brentford and Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad following another runner's-up finish in the Premier League. The Gunners are also keen to add another attacking option with Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace high on their list of targets.
