Dame Arlene Phillips has opened up about how motherhood at 47 and her tenure on Strictly Come Dancing reshaped her approach to communication and teaching dance.
The respected choreographer and former Strictly judge, now aged 82 with two daughters and two granddaughters, has spoken candidly of her experiences balancing her role as a single parent with her elder daughter Alana and her career revelations, reports Devon Live.
Speaking to The Times, Dame Arlene said: "I was a single mother when I had my elder daughter, Alana. I took two weeks off for the birth and when I came back, I had my own Winnebago, a nanny, a PA and a guru who would meditate with me every day.
"I didn't request any of it. I was 47 when Angus and I had Abi, which was wonderful as it was so unexpected, like a gift."
Arlene discussed her journey on the hit BBC show, she said: "I loved my time on Strictly and it was tough when I left, but I got up and carried on with life. I wasn't there when accusations of bullying were made against some of the dancers, but I was quite strict when I started teaching.
"Then I realised there was a different way to talk to people when I had a child. I didn't want to lose my temper. There are ways to get people to do as you want without shouting."

Her departure from Strictly's panel shocked fans after being a mainstay from 2004 to 2008 before admitting the difficulties she faced after leaving the spotlight.
Dame Arlene recounted to the Mirror her coping strategy after a tough experience. She explained: "I gave myself 48 hours to kick, scream, cry and sob, and eat scones with cream and jam, then I made myself wake up and get on with it.
"I was very fragile because I had a bereavement the day before [her manager died]. I wanted to know in detail.
"I wanted to know the real reason at the point when they decided for me to go, yet they kept me hanging on for so long with the possibility that there would be five judges."
Talking to the Express Arlene reflected on her illustrious career and shared her advice for success.
She said: "If you're passionate about it just continue the drive and don't let it go. There will always be ups and downs and bumps along the way but just go with it.
"Especially post-pandemic, a lot of people seem to feel insecure. But you need to literally listen to yourself.
"You take a deep breath and give yourself your best advice. Know that you can do it and just find a way to believe in yourself. Get out and just do it."

EXCLUSIVE 'Devoted friend' Dan Walker takes a night away from his family holiday to attend event with ex Strictly partner Nadiya Bychkova
'Devoted friend' Dan Walker spent a night away from his family holiday to attend an event with former Strictly Come Dancing partner Nadiya Bychkova. The Channel 5 presenter, 48, hosted the TRIC Awards on Tuesday at Grosvenor House in London while professional dancer Nadiya, 35, attended the ceremony as a guest. Father of three Dan explained how he had flown to the capital from Nice, France, leaving his children and wife Sarah to adhere to his work commitments, before flying back on a 6am flight to continue their quality time together. Meanwhile, onlookers at the TV and radio event say Dan seemed enchanted by Nadiya, who wore an elegant black and white gown, as the pair appeared to reignite their close friendship, which MailOnline previously revealed was the talk of Strictly. Sources have revealed that Dan, who name-checked Nadiya on several occasions during his presentation of the TRIC Awards, acted as her 'Instagram husband', taking time to capture the star from her best angles with a selfie ring light, before they continued their night together at an after party, held at the 5-star hotel's Red Bar. But once guests had left the gathering and Dan's hosting duties were seemingly over, the duo was spotted together in the hotel reception. The Channel 5 presenter hosted the TRIC Awards on Tuesday at JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London while professional dancer Nadiya attended the ceremony as a guest A source revealed: 'Dan and Nadiya's close friendship was clear to see at the TRIC Awards. 'He hosted the event and Nadiya was invited as a guest and also presented a gong but in the absence of any other Strictly dancers, she spent the night catching up with Dan. 'Dan spent 15 minutes taking Instagram pictures of Nadiya from different angles with a selfie light and later they were never far apart from each other at the after party. 'They were seen together at the hotel reception before Dan disappeared in a lift while Nadiya was left alone. 'He had openly told guests he was to rejoin his family holiday in Nice on Wednesday by flying out of Gatwick on a 6am flight and would be back to his duties as a father in no time.' During the early hours of the morning, Nadiya shared a cryptic post on her Instagram story, which read: 'The only way to truly move me is by being a good person. I don't care what you own, wear, where you live, or what you drive. 'I admire people with pure hearts and genuine intentions, that's what truly stands out to me.' Nadiya shared on her profile that she attended the TRIC Awards, which honoured the likes of Sir Trevor McDonald and Eamonn Holmes, with the charity Bright Young Dreams, formed by Dan, who's a patron of the Children's Hospital Charity, in 2023. She presented the award for Radio Presenter with former Strictly contestant Tasha Ghouri but appeared to be the only professional dancer in attendance. The London event, which also saw Sam Thompson and Pete Wicks win their first award for podcast Staying Relevant, began early afternoon at 3pm and concluded with an after party until 11pm. MailOnline previously told of how Dan and Nadiya's close friendship became the 'talk of the Strictly' cast due to their gushing social media posts and regular meet-ups. More than three years on from their dance partnership, Dan and the Ukrainian dancer continue to share snaps of their outings on Instagram, which is in stark contrast to his wife of 23-years, Sarah. He met the mother of his three children at the University of Sheffield and says she prefers to stay out of the limelight, revealing in 2021: 'She doesn't want to be on social media. Simple as that. She's much wiser than me.' In March, Dan supported the dancer on tour, interviewing the mother-of-one on stage for A Special Evening with Nadiya during the Sheffield and Barnsley shows. They also took part in a glamorous cover shoot for the Yorkshire Post Magazine where Dan wore a tuxedo and Nadiya stunned in a figure-hugging red gown. Nadiya has been single since she and fellow Strictly dancer Kai Widdrington split last year.

EXCLUSIVE Strictly partners Dan Walker and Nadiya Bychkova 'raise eyebrows' at TRIC Awards
They spent six months dancing closely together but it's commonplace for Strictly Come Dancing partners not to remain friends after the BBC show wraps, often they don't speak again. But when it comes to Dan Walker and Nadiya Bychkova, it appears to be the opposite. Their close friendship was showcased last night at the TRIC Awards in London when the former Strictly partners, who danced themselves to the quarter finals in 2021, could not stop gushing over one another. The 35-year-old Ukrainian dancer spoke to MailOnline and said: 'Dan is a really busy man but we try and make time for each other as and when we can. 'He has about 75 different jobs, I'm sure we won't be seeing each other tonight as he is presenting, though we still have fun when we do see each other.' Their friendship makes a change from other previous partners such as Amanda Abbington who accused Giovanni Pernice of verbal bullying, harrasment and physical aggression in 2023. The next year, Zara McDermott's partner, Graziano Di Prima was discovered to have kicked her during rehearsals and was later axed from the BBC flagship show. But the Channel 5 presenter, 48, who has been married to Sarah for more than 24 years, did make time to go and see his former dance partner among the crowd of diners which included the likes of podcast hosts Pete Wicks and Sam Thompson. The pair were together most of the night during breaks within the ceremony, taking selfies with other celebrities and chatting in a group. One source said: 'Wherever Dan moved, Nadiya would not be far behind. At one point she got up while still eating her dessert to go and join a group that he was in.' Nadiya attends the TRIC Awards 2025 at Grosvenor House on June 24, 2025 Attendees at the event hosted at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Tuesday said audiences were left 'cringing' with Dan's constant references to the dancer during his presentation speech. He opened the ceremony by saying 'Have we got Nadiya in the house' despite the room being filled with some of the biggest stars on television and radio including Rylan Clark and Angela Rippon. Nadia herself then took to the stage alongside her fellow Strictly star, Tasha Ghouri, to present an award before the charity auction started. It was the dancer who made the first bid on a Michelin star dinner for two, which saw the news anchor, once again, call her out and thank her for starting the proceedings. A source at the event said: 'He must have said Nadia's name lots of times! 'We were all like, what is he doing? It was cringe and quite baffling. 'When he was like, 'We have Nadia in the house' everyone at my table was like, what is going on? It certainly raised a few eyebrows. 'When he came off stage he then spent the whole time taking selfies with Nadia and other celebrities. It was all very odd.' More than four years on from the TV competition, Dan remains good friends with the Ukrainian dancer, and they regularly spend time in each other's company and share snaps of their outings on Instagram. He met his wife Sarah at the University of Sheffield and says she prefers to stay out of the limelight, revealing in 2021: 'She doesn't want to be on social media. Simple as that. She's much wiser than me.' The Ukrainian professional dancer pictured with Dan in 2021 as they competed together during the 19th series of Strictly Come Dancing
