Energy storage to hit record high

Time of India2 days ago
India's energy storage push hit a record in July, with states tendering 8.1 GWh of capacity, the highest-ever for a month.
Auctions discovered a record low tariff of ₹3.13 per unit in
solar-plus-storage projects
with four hours of storage supply.
The last discovered record tariff in the same category-with four hours of storage supply- was ₹3.32 per unit.
Energy storage projects are gaining pace as states opt for round-the-clock energy, fulfil renewable purchase obligations, and manage evening peak demand with support from the new
viability gap funding (VGF) scheme
for
battery energy storage system (BESS)
.
The power ministry recently launched the VGF scheme for BESS of up to 30 GWh capacity with support from the
Power System Development Fund (PSDF)
. This is in addition to the 13.2 GWh already in place.
With the new VGF scheme window open for a year, states are trying to make the most of it, according to industry experts.
"Battery storage capacities have been increasing not just in the number of projects being set up, but also in the size of projects," said Debmalya Sen, president, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA).
Recent bids from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra have shown 2 GWh and 4GWh capacities being shared under the new VGF scheme, Sen added.
Almost a third of the 30 GWh capacity in the scheme has been tendered out.
The tariff discoveries have been supporting the aim to set up higher capacity-projects with 4-hour one-cycle gaining traction and rates falling to ₹3.59 lakh/MW/month from 4.41 lakh/MW/month in six months.

Larsen & Toubro wins order for BESS-Integrated Solar Plant in Bihar

The Renewables business vertical of L&T has secured a significant order to develop a grid-connected 116 MWac Solar Photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 241 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kajra, Lakhisarai district in Bihar. According to the company's project classification, the order is valued between Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 2,500 crore. The engineering, procurement and construction order marks an extension of the earlier phase, taking the total co-located storage capacity of the renewable generation site at Lakhisarai to 495 MWh the largest such project awarded by a state utility in India. The deployment of a 4-hour BESS alongside intermittent solar generation will enable energy time-shifting, allowing surplus clean energy to be stored and despatched during peak demand periods. The advanced BESS solution will feature liquid cooling technology, ensuring higher power density, improved safety, and extended operational life. The initiative aligns with Government of India's policy push for co-located renewable energy storage systems and supports the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan (water, life, and greenery mission) in Bihar, while contributing to employment generation and long-term energy security. The Renewables business vertical had earlier secured an EPC order for a 275 MW Solar PV project in Gujarat, strengthening its portfolio of flexible, efficient and cost-effective clean energy systems.

L&T wins order to build 116 MW solar project with 241 MWh battery system in Bihar

New Delhi: Larsen & Toubro 's Renewables business vertical has secured an order to develop a 116 MWac grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 241 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kajra, in Bihar's Lakhisarai district. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) order takes the total co-located storage capacity of the Lakhisarai renewable generation site to 495 MWh. According to the company, this makes it the largest such project awarded by a state utility in India. The BESS, designed for a 4-hour energy storage duration, will enable energy time-shifting—storing surplus solar energy during off-peak periods and disbursing it during peak demand hours. The battery system will use liquid cooling technology to enhance power density, improve safety, and extend operational life. L&T said the project supports the central government's policy drive for co-located renewable energy and storage systems. It is also aligned with Bihar's Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan and is expected to support local employment and long-term energy resilience. Prior to this, L&T had secured an EPC contract for a 275 MW solar PV project in Gujarat. The company is expanding its presence in the renewable EPC sector, offering solar and hybrid energy systems integrated with storage. The company classified the new order under the "significant" category, which indicates a project value between ₹1,000 crore and ₹2,500 crore.
