‘It could have been done in a much better way, it was totally wrong': Haryana Congress leaders on Gurgaon police's ‘foreigners verification' drive
Hundreds of men were rounded up by the Gurgaon police as part of a 'routine verification' drive to identify Bangladeshis and Rohingya living illegally in the city. The move sparked panic among the Bengali-speaking migrant community, prompting many to leave the city.
Speaking with the Indian Express, the Nuh MLA said, 'If someone speaks Bengali or Assamese, it doesn't mean they are a foreign national, Bangladeshi or Rohingya'.
'There are ways to verify, but not like this. Putting them in holding centres, allegedly torturing and putting them up there for days. These are poor people doing odd jobs that no one else will do. It could have been done in a much better way; it was totally wrong. They have documents. The way they have been questioning, allegedly beating, and humiliating them, saying they're with Mamata (Banerjee), is …'
Ahmed said he has been raising the issue with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Shatrujeet Kapur, Director General of Police.

'They are poor who, for their daily bread, are willing to work in unhygienic conditions, and still you mete out such treatment by relying on some Union Home Ministry order. That is not what it said; you verify, but not like this. We will keep opposing it tooth and nail if it continues as well.'
Ultimately, it was being done at the government's behest, he stressed.
'Atmosphere of fear'
Haryana Congress leader Pearl Choudhary, who contested the 2024 Assembly elections from Pataudi, said the Gurgaon police's move seemed illegal and invalid, and questioned its timing. 'We have to see the timing, the Bihar elections are coming, I think it is very connected to the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) exercise,' said Choudhary.
'Bengali-speaking Muslims are being targeted in the context of the Bihar polls and even West Bengal next year. It is election-driven. It has led to an atmosphere of fear.'
Choudhary said the migrant workers have all documents, and this is not the right time for the drive.
When asked about the lack of visibility of Haryana Congress leaders on the ground for the issue, she said they have been acting for the workers' interests away from the media glare.

'We are in touch with them, and the national level leaders, even people working with me, are doing whatever we can do. Without informing the media, we are acting, and even many from the All India Professionals' Congress have been roped in for legal and other assistance. The media does not tend to give us space, but we are doing whatever we can do.'
Gurgaon police on verification drive
The Gurgaon police have refuted allegations of violence or torture on their part, saying due process was maintained and no particular religion was being targeted in their check for illegal foreigners.
Last Saturday, the police said they would round up only 'confirmed foreign nationals' as part of their verification drive, as they shut four holding facilities that housed suspected foreigners on Friday. The four facilities were at community centres in Badshahpur, Sector 10A, Sector 40, and Sector 1 in Manesar.
'We had completed verification and checking of the suspected foreigners, hence the move. Even earlier, only those who were strong suspects based on missing or discrepancies in documents, or for example Bangladeshi numbers found on their phone or their WhatsApp being deleted, were taken to the holding centres,' a police spokesperson said.
Earlier, Gurgaon MLA and BJP leader Mukesh Sharma supported the verification drive. 'The Rohingya have negatively affected the law and order situation in Gurgaon, we all know. They set up jhuggis (here) and their numbers increase… they have a system to get documents made.'
Asked about domestic help who are genuine citizens belonging to West Bengal being picked up, he said, 'See, as directions have come from the (Union) government, we have to support the drive. The government and police are working based on their intel. Let the checking be thorough.'

Suvendu's convoy attacked in Cooch Behar: ‘TMC murder plan'
The convoy of Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, was allegedly attacked by some people in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal on Tuesday afternoon. Glasses of the bulletproof vehicle in which Adhikari and former Union minister Nisith Pramanik were seated were smashed, it was alleged. Also, the windowpanes of at least one police escort vehicle were shattered, it is learnt. The BJP alleged that the purported attack, which took place in the Khagrabari area of the district, was carried out by Trinamool Congress workers. The TMC, on the other hand, dubbed the incident a 'well-scripted drama'. Adhikari was travelling to meet the superintendent of police (SP) over alleged oppression of party workers in the district, after securing an order from the Calcutta High Court. He was also scheduled to hold a party meeting in the district. The TMC organised protests at 19 spots along the route of the convoy in Cooch Behar against the possibility of NRC implementation in West Bengal, harassment of migrant labourers and disrespect to Bengali language. Chanting 'Joy Bangla' and 'go back' slogans, the party workers showed block flags to the convoy. Later, stones were allegedly pelted at the convoy and cars were attacked with bamboo sticks. Speaking to mediapersons after the incident, Adhikari alleged, 'The TMC under the leadership of Udayan Guha (Dinhata MLA and North Bengal Development Minister) carried out the attack in the presence of police. They smashed the glass of a bulletproof car with stones. I was in a bulletproof car which saved me. The TMC gathered Rohingyas who had infiltrated this region and made them carry out the attack.' 'They tried to smash the car in which I was moving with rods and sticks and, after they failed, shattered the bulletproof glasses with heavy stones,' he added. Stating that he was alive because of the bulletproof vehicle, the BJP leader said he would go against the SP for the law and order breakdown with the full force of the law. 'I had taken necessary steps of informing the police and the administration before coming here, since this programme has the sanction of the High Court, and because I had a hunch that something like this could happen. Now the SP will face the music,' he added. Lok Sabha MP and former state BJP chief Sukanta Majumder said, 'This is unacceptable. TMC goons attacked the convoy of Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. This could not have happened without the approval of the TMC top brass. Our state president has asked us to protest across Bengal and we will do it.' Former Lok Sabha MP and Union minister of state Nisith Paramanik, who was part of the convoy, said, 'It was a pre-planned attack. We asked our security personnel to stay calm. They even broke the glasses of bulletproof cars. The TMC is really desperate.' He further said Guha was present at a local religious institution and instructed the mob to carry out the attack. 'It was an attempt on our lives,' he claimed. Countering the BJP's allegations, TMC's Cooch Behar district president Partha Pratim Roy said, 'Today, people of Bengal and TMC workers showed black flags and protested against the BJP. Our workers staged a peaceful demonstration. No one was involved in violence. The BJP staged the incident to get sympathy.' 'The BJP orchestrated this violence on their own to settle internal scores and grab media footage,' he said. Mamata slams Assam govt as gram pradhan gets NRC notice
1 2 Ghatal/Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday questioned how the Assam govt was issuing NRC notices to Bengal residents, her statement coinciding with yet another Cooch Behar resident receiving the same during the day. This time, the recipient is an elected gram pradhan of Mathabhanga. "How is the Assam govt issuing such notices? NRC notices are being sent to Rajbanshis, Seal families, Matuas — they are being harassed. Bengali workers are being killed in Maharashtra. They are being tortured in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. Many are still jailed in Gurgaon," she said. "How dare they say there is no language called Bengali? I have no problem with speaking other languages — I respect them all. But it is unacceptable if someone is not allowed to speak in his mother tongue or if someone speaking in Bengali is called Bangladeshi or if someone with valid documents is pushed back to Bangladesh," she said. TMC posted the notice on its social media handles, and in Bengali. "Another NRC notice! This time targeting Cooch Behar! The Foreigners Tribunal in Nalbari, Assam, has summoned the elected head of Hazrahat-II panchayat. They have been asked to appear on Aug 27 to prove their 'citizenship'. Is Bengal under Assam's jurisdiction?" it said. The CM said in the name of SIR, there was a veiled attempt to implement NRC. "No one should be left out of the voters' list. Everyone should get themselves enlisted. We will not tolerate the removal of genuine citizens from voter rolls and labelling them as Bangladeshis. Their EPICs were issued by ECI. It was the govt of India which issued Aadhaar cards," she added. "Someone's parents passed away long ago and now they are demanding their birth certificate. This is a conspiracy by the double-engine govt — the govt of India along with the Election Commission of India. The names of as many as 7 lakh Hindus were removed in Assam," warned CM Banerjee. Didi assures migrants of help CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday urged migrant workers to return to Bengal, promising that once they registered on notified portal and declared their wish to return, the state would ensure that they receive all help. "Just say that you require help and we will ensure that we bring you under social welfare schemes. We will also try to help you through direct transfers," she said in Keshpur after taking stock of flood situation.
