Suvendu's convoy attacked in Cooch Behar: ‘TMC murder plan'

Suvendu's convoy attacked in Cooch Behar: ‘TMC murder plan'

Indian Express2 days ago
The convoy of Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, was allegedly attacked by some people in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal on Tuesday afternoon.
Glasses of the bulletproof vehicle in which Adhikari and former Union minister Nisith Pramanik were seated were smashed, it was alleged. Also, the windowpanes of at least one police escort vehicle were shattered, it is learnt.
The BJP alleged that the purported attack, which took place in the Khagrabari area of the district, was carried out by Trinamool Congress workers.
The TMC, on the other hand, dubbed the incident a 'well-scripted drama'.
Adhikari was travelling to meet the superintendent of police (SP) over alleged oppression of party workers in the district, after securing an order from the Calcutta High Court. He was also scheduled to hold a party meeting in the district.
The TMC organised protests at 19 spots along the route of the convoy in Cooch Behar against the possibility of NRC implementation in West Bengal, harassment of migrant labourers and disrespect to Bengali language. Chanting 'Joy Bangla' and 'go back' slogans, the party workers showed block flags to the convoy. Later, stones were allegedly pelted at the convoy and cars were attacked with bamboo sticks.
Speaking to mediapersons after the incident, Adhikari alleged, 'The TMC under the leadership of Udayan Guha (Dinhata MLA and North Bengal Development Minister) carried out the attack in the presence of police. They smashed the glass of a bulletproof car with stones. I was in a bulletproof car which saved me. The TMC gathered Rohingyas who had infiltrated this region and made them carry out the attack.'
'They tried to smash the car in which I was moving with rods and sticks and, after they failed, shattered the bulletproof glasses with heavy stones,' he added.
Stating that he was alive because of the bulletproof vehicle, the BJP leader said he would go against the SP for the law and order breakdown with the full force of the law. 'I had taken necessary steps of informing the police and the administration before coming here, since this programme has the sanction of the High Court, and because I had a hunch that something like this could happen. Now the SP will face the music,' he added.
Lok Sabha MP and former state BJP chief Sukanta Majumder said, 'This is unacceptable. TMC goons attacked the convoy of Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. This could not have happened without the approval of the TMC top brass. Our state president has asked us to protest across Bengal and we will do it.'
Former Lok Sabha MP and Union minister of state Nisith Paramanik, who was part of the convoy, said, 'It was a pre-planned attack. We asked our security personnel to stay calm. They even broke the glasses of bulletproof cars. The TMC is really desperate.'
He further said Guha was present at a local religious institution and instructed the mob to carry out the attack. 'It was an attempt on our lives,' he claimed.
Countering the BJP's allegations, TMC's Cooch Behar district president Partha Pratim Roy said, 'Today, people of Bengal and TMC workers showed black flags and protested against the BJP. Our workers staged a peaceful demonstration. No one was involved in violence. The BJP staged the incident to get sympathy.' 'The BJP orchestrated this violence on their own to settle internal scores and grab media footage,' he said.
TMC minister Udayan Guha said, 'Our workers and people protested against the BJP's proposal to bring in NRC in Bengal. Whoever is trying to insult Bengali language, harass our workers in other states will face the wrath of the people.'

Rahul Gandhi Releases New Video, Claims More 'Proof' On EC, BJP Collusion in Voter List Fraud Rahul Gandhi has released a new video detailing his serious allegations against the Election Commission (EC) and the BJP. He claims that the two are colluding to manipulate voter rolls and 'steal votes' in favor of the ruling party. In his video, Gandhi highlights examples from several states, including Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, accusing the EC of creating fake voters and manipulating the voter lists. He also pointed to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, which he says is designed to help the BJP secure votes in the state's upcoming elections. Gandhi's charges go beyond mere irregularities, calling them "institutional theft" and a betrayal of India's democracy. He challenged the Election Commission to investigate his claims, asserting that he is ready to provide the evidence. In his boldest statement, Gandhi declared that "vote chori is not just an electoral scam, but a betrayal of our Constitution." His defiant stance is shaking the political establishment as he vows to bring accountability and transparency to India's election process.#rahulgandhi #electioncommission #votechori #voterfraud #bjp #congress #indiapolitics #electionmanipulation #biharvotes #bharatjodoyatra #indianpolitics #fakevotes #voterrolls #institutionaltheft #bjpcongress #maharashtraelections #chhattisgarhelections #uttarakhandelections #specialrevision #electionscam #breakingnews #trending #trendingnow #toi #bharat #toibharat #indianews 28.1K views | 3 hours ago

Wish India flourishes without language terror: Mamata

Amid protests over alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-ruled States, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday (August 8, 2025) referred to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and wished that the country flourished without the "terror of language". She also hoped that people would wake up in an India where "Rabindranath's language, Bengali, receives respect, dignity, and the love of all citizens". 'I offer my reverence at the feet of the world poet Rabindranath Tagore. He resides in our hearts in every living moment. He is the poet of our soul, and I invoke him today from the depths of my heart. He is our guardian and our guiding light,' Ms. Banerjee posted on X. Ms. Banerjee made her comments on a day that marks Tagore's 84th death anniversary, which, according to the Bengali calendar, falls on the 22nd day of Shravan. 'Every day is a day of remembrance in his memory. We remember the poet and celebrate him throughout the year and day and night." "May that nation awaken where Rabindranath's language, Bengali, receives respect, dignity, and the love of all citizens. May that nation flourish where there is no terror of language," the Chief Minister said. Banerjee mentioned that the state government had on Thursday organised a programme in Jhargram district, remembering Tagore. 'Yesterday, we had a government programme in Jhargram. There, we had the opportunity to pay tribute to many scholars. We bowed to the world poet on that occasion. Before that programme, we also paid tribute to him publicly on social media,' she added.

‘I lost 2019 Lok Sabha election because…': Mallikarjun Kharge's big charge as he targets PM Modi

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday alleged that he had lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections because of "bogus votes". Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addresses the party's 'Vote Adhikar Rally' at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Friday,(PTI) Addressing the Congress's 'Vote Adhikar Rally' in Bengaluru's Freedom Park, Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging 'vote theft'. 'The current government is a government of theft. Modi is making this country cry with bogus votes. I had said this in 2019. In my entire life, I lost in the 2019 elections, I also lost because of bogus votes, which has now come to light,' news agency ANI quoted Kharge as saying. After winning 11 consecutive elections (nine assembly and two Lok Sabha elections), the Congress veteran had suffered a massive defeat in the 2019 general polls. He was beaten on his home turf by his loyal follower-turned-rival Umesh Jadhav, BJP candidate, by a margin of 95,452 votes. It was his first electoral defeat in 47 years of political journey since 1972. Backing Rahul Gandhi's 'vote theft' claim in Mahadevapura in Bengaluru Central, the Congress chief alleged that the Election Commission of India works at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. "In the elections held in Bengaluru, a legislative assembly has verified 6,60,000 votes. The last election was a betrayal election. Modi's attempt is that even if people do not vote, Modi and Amit Shah order the Election Commission to decide where to vote less and where to vote more. Modi has already intimidated the Congress and other parties and gained a majority," Kharge added. He said that the BJP won the Maharashtra and Karnataka Assembly polls and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections illegitimately. "Earlier in Maharashtra, and in Karnataka, he has continued the same trick. Modi and company did not win the 2024 elections," he said. He added that the INDIA bloc MPs will march to the Election Commission's office in Delhi on August 11. "This government will not survive, we will make you shunned by the people. Not just to bring them down, we will teach them a lesson; they are ruining our country with bad economic policies. On Monday, all the MPs will walk to the Election Commission and appeal to the Commission in Delhi. We have called a meeting of the INDIA alliance leaders. We should all be united; otherwise, PM Modi would have come to power like this," Kharge further said. Addressing the rally, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, demanded that the ECI provide immediately the voter lists and video recordings from the last 10 years. "BJP's ideology is against the Constitution of India. Every Congress leader and worker will protect Commission of India should give us the voter lists and video recordings from the last 10 years, immediately," Rahul Gandhi said.
