Iraq's Development Road to include 6 airports and 15 industrial cities
Baghdad ( – Iraq's Ministry of Transport recently unveiled key outcomes from a pivotal meeting led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani regarding the ambitious Development Road project. Held last Wednesday, the session brought together the Minister of Transport, the head of the Supreme Committee for Coordination Between Governorates, and various directors-general, advisors, along with a representative from Oliver Wyman, the project's economic consultant. Maytham Al-Safi, Director of Relations and Media for the Ministry of Transport, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that discussions around the Development Road project have been continuous. These meetings have involved the Ministry of Transport, other relevant institutions, and both the Italian technical consultant (BTB) and the economic consultant, Oliver Wyman. Delving into last Wednesday's meeting, Al-Safi explained that the Prime Minister stressed a clear commitment to implementing directives, particularly concerning the formation of a committee. This committee will be tasked with determining the final route between Iraq and Turkey, basing its decisions on technical and economic considerations. Furthermore, the Prime Minister emphasized resolving all existing challenges within the project and adhering to its strict timelines. The meeting also featured a presentation by Oliver Wyman on the project's economic and financial model, according to Al-Safi. This presentation, a culmination of previous discussions with the Ministry of Transport, outlined the economic framework to be presented to the Prime Minister, leading to its finalization and preparation for investment offerings. Regarding the project's current status, Al-Safi confirmed that the preliminary design phase has concluded, and significant progress has been made in the detailed design stage. The Ministry aims to present the project to major international companies by the end of the current year. The project will be strategically divided into sections to encourage competition among global firms, ensuring their adherence to international standards for successful implementation. Beyond Iraq's borders, Al-Safi disclosed that several countries are already formal partners in the project, including Turkey, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, via signed Memoranda of Understanding. Additionally, another council has been formed, comprising Turkey, Hungary, Serbia, and Bulgaria, representing the European dimension of the initiative. Other nations also aspire to join the project, either in its execution or participation. Al-Safi highlighted recent visits from economic representatives of various embassies in Baghdad to the Ministry of Transport and the Supreme Committee for the Development Road project, including the Chinese economic advisor last year and the Australian and French ambassadors this year. These discussions underscored widespread international interest in the project, recognizing it as a global endeavor with implications beyond Iraq for the entire region and the world. Ultimately, Al-Safi asserted that the Development Road project is poised to create thousands of job opportunities for Iraqis and fundamentally transform Iraq's economic transportation landscape. It is also expected to boost the national economic output, leading to comprehensive Iraqi economic integration, both domestically and internationally. The project's overarching policy aims for seamless connectivity across all sectors. Al-Safi further clarified that the project will integrate three existing major airports—Baghdad, Basra, and Najaf—and will connect to three new airports slated to enter service: Nasiriyah, Karbalaa, and the recently opened Mosul airport. Moreover, the project will link to 15 industrial cities, emphasizing its role beyond mere transit. He concluded by stating that the project is an integrated developmental initiative, benefiting connecting provinces by utilizing their raw materials and generating investment opportunities through local governments, institutions, and ministries.

Israel and Syria Paris talks: Agree to continue dialogue
Shafaq News – Paris Israel and Syria have agreed to continue direct talks following a rare meeting in Paris, marking the first publicly confirmed high-level contact between the two sides in years, Syrian media quoted a diplomatic source as saying on Saturday. The meeting, mediated by US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack, brought together Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, alongside intelligence officials from both countries. A senior Syrian diplomatic source told state broadcaster Ekhbariya that the dialogue was 'honest and responsible,' underscoring a mutual willingness to prevent further escalation. According to Syrian accounts, the talks focused on recent flare-ups in Suwayda province, where intercommunal violence between Druze and Bedouin groups, followed by Israeli airstrikes, raised fears of broader instability. The Syrian delegation insisted on the country's territorial integrity, rejected any unauthorized foreign presence, and demanded Israel's withdrawal from newly occupied positions. Damascus also called for the reactivation of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement with international guarantees. The source added that Syria conveyed firm opposition to external attempts to fragment the state or foster sectarian divisions through the creation of parallel entities. Instead, it emphasized a national consensus around reconstruction and political unity. While Washington framed the talks as a first step toward de-escalation, officials stressed that the process remains fragile. Barrack, confirmed that the goal of reopening channels of communication had been 'precisely accomplished' and that follow-up talks are expected.

US citizen recounts ‘terrorizing' days in Suwayda during clashes
Also in Syria ISIS carries out three attacks on SDF in Deir ez-Zor US army kills senior ISIS leader in Syria Suwayda violence 'complicates' SDF integration into Syria army, says official Female Kurdish force rescues Yazidi woman from 11 years ISIS captivity A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - 'It was like watching a horror film,' said Wefaa Jarmaqani, an American citizen who was visiting family in Syria's Suwayda province when clashes broke out earlier this month between armed Druze groups and Bedouin tribes. In nine days of clashes, 1,386 people were killed, including 386 civilians and 238 people who were 'extrajudicially executed by members of the ministries of defence and interior,' according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. 'It was one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever experienced in my whole 63 years of life,' said Jarmaqani. She emigrated to the United States in 1975. On May 10, 2025, recently retired from her job, she traveled to Suwayda to spend a few months with her family. The clashes broke out on July 12. Two days later, the Syrian government deployed forces to the province to quell the spreading violence. Israel intervened on behalf of the Druze, carrying out airstrikes on Syrian military positions and the defence ministry in Damascus. Jarmaqani was staying at the home of her sister in a town close to Suwayda city. On the morning of July 13, her sister woke her saying they had to flee. They went to the home of family in the city, feeling it would be safer for everyone to be together. 'The sound of shelling, the sound of chaos, the feel of fear was everywhere,' she said. In the city, Jarmaqani saw children as young as 12, including her nephew, carrying arms to protect their families. 'It was very uneasy, very uneasy to see how people, men, young adults, teenagers were protecting their neighbourhood, their families,' she said. There were frequent explosions and shelling, and Jarmaqani said they were constantly running down into the basement for safety. 'My nephew and his friend were protecting us by checking outside, when they were targeted. They were spotted and they were targeted,' she said. Two missiles hit very close to their building and her nephew's wife fainted in fear. 'So we were trying to wake her up when all of a sudden things start flying off the kitchen counters and lots of, lots of destruction. A missile had just hit their neighbour's across the street, about 50 metres away. The aim were my nephew and the group that was protecting us. After that, we had to flee to another town. It was very disturbing,' she said. 'We smelled death as we were fleeing Suwayda. You could smell the stench of dead bodies,' she said, her face grimacing with the pain of the memory. 'It was like watching a horror film. It was very scary.' A first ceasefire, with US mediation, was reached and on July 16 interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced he was pulling Syrian forces out of the province. That truce agreement failed to end the clashes. It did not provide for the protection of civilians or access to humanitarian aid, nor were Bedouin representatives included in the negotiations, according to Human Rights Watch. A second ceasefire was announced on July 19 that included opening humanitarian corridors into Suwayda and deploying state security forces to de-escalate and secure key routes. It has brought an uneasy calm to the province. At least 145,600 people were displaced by the violence, according to the United Nations. Humanitarian conditions have continued to deteriorate even after the truce with electricity, water, fuel, and telecommunications widely unavailable. 'Food insecurity is deepening, as bakeries have ceased operations due to shortages of flour and fuel, and essential food items are largely absent from local markets. Only a few shops remain open, often with long queues for limited goods. Critical shortages of clean water, hygiene kits, sanitary pads, and baby supplies have been reported. Many displaced families lack basic items such as mattresses and blankets, underscoring the urgent need for multi-sectoral humanitarian assistance,' the UN's humanitarian agency said in its latest report. All sides in the conflict have been implicated in the many abuses that took place in Suwayda, according to Human Rights Watch. Jarmaqani said they were receiving news over Facebook of people being executed in public squares, beheaded, and gunned down. She paused her story and covered her face with her hands, overwhelmed by the horrible violence and its futility. 'I really don't know how to say this, but it was so uncalled for. We're all from the same country and we're all humans and we all deserve a decent life,' she said. Hussein Omar contributed to this article.
