Turkey to provide Syria with 2 billion cubic metres of gas annually
DAMASCUS, May 22 (Reuters) - Turkey will provide 2 billion cubic metres of natural gas to Syria each year, Turkish energy minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on Thursday.
In a joint news conference with his Syrian counterpart in Damascus, Bayraktar said that Turkey's gas exports to Syria will contribute to an additional 1,300 megawatts of electricity production in the country.
Ankara, which supported rebel forces in neighbouring Syria throughout the 13-year civil war that ended this month with the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, is now positioning itself to play a major role in Syria's reconstruction.
Turkey will also provide an additional 1,000 megawatts of electricity to neighbouring Syria for its short term needs, he added.
Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir said they agreed to activate a gas pipeline that connects Syria with Turkey, with gas flows expected in June.
"This will significantly boost electricity generation, which will positively impact the Syrian people's electricity needs," al-Bashir said.
The two minister discussed completing a 400-kilovolt line that links the countries, contributing to importing around 500 megawatts of electricity into Syria, to be ready by the end of the year or shortly thereafter, he added.
Cooperation also includes opening the door for Turkish companies to invest in mining, phosphate, electricity generation and electricity distribution in Syria.
"There is very intensive work underway regarding the discovery of new natural resources, whether gas or oil, on land or at sea," Bayraktar said.

WASHINGTON, June 4 (Reuters) - The CEO of a company seeking to build a liquefied natural gas terminal near Philadelphia told Reuters on Wednesday he met officials at the White House this week to "provide intelligence" about the project in the works for years despite local opposition. Penn America Energy Holdings wants to export 7.2 million tons a year of LNG from a site near Philadelphia to markets in Europe and Asia. Franc James, the CEO, said he had a meeting at the White House on Tuesday and that the company is considering several locations other than the original site in Chester, Pennsylvania. A source close to the talks also said James met with White House personnel. The White House said it does not confirm private meetings. The Philadelphia region, once an oil refining center, has seen plants shutter in recent decades as the industry concentrated along the Gulf Coast. Local and state officials for years have sought to leverage the abundance of natural gas in western Pennsylvania, but building new infrastructure in the densely populated eastern part has been met with local opposition. Trump has vowed to open new gas pipelines and boost the LNG industry. His support for the project could also pitch a fight in a battleground state with Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro, up for reelection next year. James said he had worked with Trump during his first term when the project was "in the fetal stages" but the company put the plans on hold when former President Joe Biden paused approvals of LNG exports in early 2024 to study economic and environmental impacts of the booming business. "Developing a project in the Northeast is quite different than the Gulf Coast, Louisiana and Texas, so it requires a great deal of support, not only politically in the state, but also with communities ... in terms of pipeline transmission as well as ... along the Delaware River." Nearby sites in Trainer, Marcus Hook and Eddystone are also being considered, James said. The project has support from U.S. Senator Dave McCormick, a Republican from Pennsylvania. It has been opposed by Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat. It would need federal, state and local permits. Analysts said it has an uphill battle, especially to get LNG on the water by 2030, which James said is a target. Alex Munton, director of global gas and LNG research at consulting firm Rapidan Energy Group, said the proposal has faced significant objections from local opponents. "It requires a lot of time and money, and therefore political support alone is not enough," Munton said. Ira Joseph, an LNG market expert and senior researcher at Columbia University, agreed. "When you compare it to the opportunities out there for other LNG projects it's not high on the list in terms of probability."

Canada's propane exports soar 9.2% in 2024 as gas output grew
CALGARY, June 4 (Reuters) - Canadian exports of propane and butane grew significantly in 2024 as natural gas production increased in the country, according to new data from the Canada Energy Regulator on Wednesday. The data for 2024 showed Canadian propane exports averaged 218,300 barrels per day (bpd), a 9.2% increase from the previous year, while butane exports surged 15% to an average of 56,100 bpd. The strong growth was due to an overall rise in natural gas output from Canada last year, which led to greater production volumes of natural gas liquids such as propane and butane, the regulator said. Canada currently has two marine propane export terminals located on the west coast of British Columbia. Two additional export terminals are under development — the Ridley Island Energy Export Facility, a joint project by Calgary-based AltaGas ( opens new tab and Dutch multinational Royal Vopak — and Trigon Pacific LPG, led by Trigon Pacific Terminals. These new terminals are expected to boost Canada's access to Asian markets due to their proximity compared to U.S. Gulf Coast facilities. Canada is the second-largest supplier of propane to Japan and South Korea, after the U.S. In 2024, all of Canada's butane exports went to the United States.
