Nifty 50, Sensex today: What to expect from Indian stock market in trade on June 17

Mint5 hours ago

The Indian stock market benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are likely to open lower Tuesday, tracking mixed global market cues.
The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a weak start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 24,974 level, a discount of nearly 22 points from the Nifty futures' previous close.
On Monday, the domestic equity market ended sharply higher, with the benchmark Nifty 50 closing above the 24,900 level.
The Sensex surged 677.55 points, or 0.84%, to close at 81,796.15, while the Nifty 50 settled 227.90 points, or 0.92%, higher at 24,946.50.
Here's what to expect from Sensex, Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty today:
Nifty Open Interest (OI) on the call side is concentrated at the 25,000 and 25,200 strike prices, suggesting these levels as key resistance zones. On the put side, significant OI build-up is seen at the 24,900 and 24,800 strike prices, highlighting these as important support levels, said Hardik Matalia, Derivative Analyst at Choice Broking.
Nifty 50 witnessed an excellent follow-through upmove action on June 16 and closed the day higher by 227 points.
'A long bull candle was formed on the daily chart that has surpassed the hurdle of the recent opening downside gap area at 24,825 levels. Nifty 50 is placed again into a broader high low range of 24,500 - 25,100 levels and is currently moving up from the lower range towards the upper range area,' said Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities.
He believes the underlying trend of Nifty 50 continues to be positive, and after the formation of short-term bottom reversal at 24,473 levels on Friday, Nifty 50 is expected to move towards the next hurdle of 25,100 - 25,200 levels in the next few sessions. Immediate support is placed at 24,800.
Dr. Praveen Dwarakanath, Vice President of Hedged.in said that Nifty 50 covered the gap between 24,900 and 24,700 in yesterday's rally, forming a bullish candle; however, the index continues to trade in the range of 24,500 and 25,200.
'The options writers' data also suggests a range-bound move in the index for now. Nifty 50 index is bouncing from the support at the 24,500 level towards its resistance at the 25,200 level. The stochastics continued to fall even though the index rallied upside, indicating the upside momentum is limited to its resistance level. The ADX DI+ and the ADX DI- lines are moving crisscrossing each other, indicating no clear trend in the index. One can look to sell the index near its resistance and buy near its support until one of these levels is taken off,' said Dwarakanath.
According to VLA Ambala, Co-Founder of Stock Market Today, Nifty 50 formed a bullish Marubozu candlestick pattern at the daily time frame and concluded above last week's closing price.
'This development offered a boost to the market sentiments. For this week, Monday's lower range of 24,600 to 24,700 will be a key range to watch. As long as the price sentiment remains bullish above this range, bulls will try to protect the range. The Nifty index's RSI was at 55 at the daily time frame, which indicated a moderate buying range for traders and investors. While the broader trend remains bullish, any dips in this range could present buying opportunities,' Ambala said.
Reviewing these aspects, Ambala expects Nifty 50 to gather support between 24,900 and 24,750 and meet resistance near 25,180 and 25,250.
Bank Nifty index gained 417.55 points, or 0.75%, to close at 55,944.90 on Monday, snapping its four consecutive sessions of losses.
'Bank Nifty formed a bull candle with a higher high and higher low and in the process filled its Friday's gap down area and 20 days EMA. In the coming session a move above 56,000 levels will open further upside towards 56,600 and 57,000 levels. Failure to do so will lead to consolidation in the range of 56,000 - 55,000 amid stock specific action,' Bajaj Broking Research said.
On the downside only a breach below 55,000 levels will open downside towards the key support area of 54,500 - 55,000 in the coming sessions, the brokerage firm added.
Om Mehra, Technical Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities noted that the Bank Nifty index formed a bullish candle on the daily chart, rebounding from the recent swing low of 55,149.30.
'Bank Nifty index has reclaimed the 20-day SMA and closed above the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level at 55,840, drawn from the recent high to the low. The index is currently hovering just below the 56,100 mark, which coincides with the 50% retracement level, a key resistance zone in the short term. Sustained strength above this zone could open the door toward 56,640, the 78.6% retracement level,' Mehra said.
On the downside, the 20-day EMA and the 23.6% retracement at 55,475 now serve as immediate support levels. The RSI has recovered to 55, from the lower levels. However, the MACD remains in negative territory with a slight narrowing of the histogram, he added.
'Overall, a decisive close above 56,200 would strengthen bullish sentiment, while any dip towards 55,800 – 55,720 could offer a favourable buy-on-dip opportunity,' Mehra said.

Digital Rupee vs Crypto: What the debate misses about the future of money

India is in the midst of a silent revolution in money. On one hand, we have the Digital Rupee , the Reserve Bank of India 's Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), and on the other, the rapidly growing world of crypto-assets and stablecoins operating on public blockchains. Both are vying to redefine how value is transferred in the digital age. And yet, the ongoing debate—often framed as CBDC vs Crypto—misses the point entirely. Because the real question is not about which technology wins, but who benefits from it. When the debate gets wrong Public discourse often pits the Digital Rupee and crypto against each other—as if they are fundamentally incompatible. The truth is, both are programmable forms of digital money, designed for different purposes, but potentially coexisting in the same future financial system. Crypto Tracker TOP COIN SETS BTC 50 :: ETH 50 -3.77% Buy Smart Contract Tracker -5.49% Buy DeFi Tracker -10.48% Buy Web3 Tracker -10.95% Buy NFT & Metaverse Tracker -12.38% Buy TOP COINS (₹) XRP 193 ( 2.6% ) Buy BNB 56,658 ( 0.59% ) Buy Bitcoin 9,215,509 ( 0.39% ) Buy Ethereum 222,362 ( -1.14% ) Buy Solana 13,227 ( -1.93% ) Buy The Digital Rupee is a sovereign, state-backed currency that retains all the regulatory control of fiat, with some of the benefits of digital settlement—speed, transparency, and auditabilit. Crypto, especially stablecoins and DeFi protocols, represents open, global finance—designed to reduce reliance on intermediaries, enable 24/7 global settlement, and allow innovation at the edges. Did you Know? The world of cryptocurrencies is very dynamic. Prices can go up or down in a matter of seconds. Thus, having reliable answers to such questions is crucial for investors. View Details » But focusing only on the instruments is missing the forest for the trees. What matters most is the end user's experience. Live Events For the user, convenience is king Whether it's a CBDC or a stablecoin, the average Indian citizen wants: Instant settlement Low transaction fees Universal acceptance Interoperability across borders Clear privacy and control over their funds If the Digital Rupee delivers this, it wins. If crypto and stablecoins can do it better, they will continue gaining ground—especially among tech-savvy users, freelancers, SMEs, and NRIs. So far, Digital Rupee usage is modest—with just 19 banks live and around 100,000 daily transactions reported in mid-2024. By comparison, UPI clocks 350 million+ transactions a day, and stablecoins globally settled over $7 trillion in 2023. The bigger problem: Not who builds it, but who controls it Let's zoom out. India built UPI—arguably the most successful public payments infrastructure in the world. But despite being a product of NPCI (a quasi-government entity), UPI adoption is now dominated by three major apps: Google Pay PhonePe (majority owned by Walmart) Paytm (with large foreign ownership) Together, these three control over 94% of UPI transaction volume. So while UPI is Indian in origin, the monetization, data leverage, and platform control rests in the hands of foreign-backed companies. Indian startups in the payments space face high entry barriers, and the market has become increasingly difficult to penetrate due to high compliance, capital, and branding costs. If India repeats the same model with the Digital Rupee—where state infrastructure is handed over to foreign-led platforms for distribution—we will be building Indian rails for global profits, again. India needs a strategic payments agenda To avoid this, India must learn from UPI's journey: Create favorable policies and early access for Indian startups to build on top of the Digital Rupee. Ensure neutral interoperability layers so no single app dominates wallet access or merchant onboarding. Offer incentives and sandboxes for fintechs and Web3 startups to create novel CBDC use cases in sectors like trade, MSME finance, insurance, and mobility. Consider public-private models where infrastructure remains open but innovation is encouraged locally. After all, payments aren't just a technical tool—they are an instrument of economic sovereignty . And whoever controls the interface to money, controls much more than just transactions. It's not Crypto vs CBDC. It's about empowering Indians At the end of the day, the user doesn't care whether their money comes from a central bank node or a smart contract. They care about speed, cost, and usability. A Digital Rupee that settles instantly, works offline, and integrates with UPI? Excellent. A crypto wallet that lets an Indian freelancer receive USD-stablecoins from a US client and cash out into INR at low cost? Also excellent. The key is not to fixate on the rails, but to ensure that the value stays in India, and Indian entrepreneurs are not locked out of building the future. Because if we don't, we risk creating another UPI story—built by India, but controlled by others. And that's a mistake we can't afford to make twice. Iran-Israel conflict: How will blocking of Strait of Hormuz hit India? Indian refiners look at alternative routes for fuel supply

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a crucial channel for worldwide energy transportation. (AI image) Will the escalating Iran-Israel conflict cause an oil supply issue for India? Indian refiners are exploring alternative energy sources, including those from West African nations, to ensure fuel supply security in case Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions with Israel, according to oil industry officials. Following the eruption of Iran-Israel tensions on Friday, senior oil ministry officials and industry leaders are conducting scenario analyses and preparing contingency plans for potential supply disruptions and price volatility. The oil ministry reports that India maintains crude oil and petroleum product storage facilities capable of meeting 74 days of domestic consumption requirements. The strategic petroleum reserves account for 9.5 days of this total capacity. Unlike its strategic crude reserves, India has not established gas storage facilities. Additionally, the government maintains confidentiality regarding national oil and gas inventory levels. Industry executives indicate that this overall storage capability includes stocks at refineries, pipeline networks, vessels in transit, product storage terminals, and vacant tanks suitable for storing both crude oil and refined products. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo What is the Strait of Hormuz & why it matters The Strait of Hormuz serves as a crucial channel for worldwide energy transportation. This strategic waterway, spanning just 29 nautical miles at its narrowest section, facilitates the movement of approximately one-third of maritime oil shipments and 20% of global liquefied natural gas. The strategic significance of this passageway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, is emphasised by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), which designates it as the "world's most important oil chokepoint." The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that in 2023, roughly 20 million barrels per day (mb/d) of crude oil and refined products traversed the Strait of Hormuz, accounting for about 30% of global oil commerce. The majority of this volume—approximately 70%—was destined for Asian markets, with China, India and Japan being the primary destinations. Although alternative pipeline networks are present, their capacity remains restricted. According to IEA calculations, merely 4.2 mb/d of crude oil can be redirected through land-based routes, including Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline to the Red Sea and the UAE's Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline to Fujairah. This available capacity constitutes just about one-fourth of the regular daily volume passing through the Strait. Impact on India A potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz could impact 40% of India's crude imports and 54% of its LNG supplies. This strait currently facilitates approximately 30% of global oil trade and 20% of LNG shipments. India's crude oil dependency on imports stands at 90%, with refineries heavily dependent on Gulf supplies. Russian imports constitute approximately 35%, Gulf nations contribute over 40%, whilst Africa, the US and other sources make up the balance. African imports declined to 5% in May from 12% in April. Also Read | Significant dent? How an escalating Iran-Israel conflict can threaten India's growth story - explained For 2024, India's LNG procurement from the Gulf region stands at 54%, with Qatar providing 80% and UAE supplying the remaining amount. Qatar, ranking amongst the top three global LNG exporters, maintains significant influence over worldwide gas supply. Any interruption to Qatari exports could trigger a surge in spot LNG prices. Additionally, long-term LNG prices could increase, considering 60% of India's long-term agreements are connected to crude oil rates. However, industry executives from Indian refining and gas companies express scepticism about Iran implementing a blockade, based on historical precedents. They suggest that such an action would likely trigger substantial price increases and direct US intervention, whilst also adversely affecting Gulf nations and oil-dependent countries. Additionally, executives note that blocking the strait would disrupt both Gulf exports and essential imports, including Iran's own trade, which serves as a significant deterrent. Currently, Indian refiners are maintaining their normal purchasing patterns without resorting to 'panic buying'. Also Read | Iran-Israel conflict impact: Basmati rice prices to drop as exports to Iran, third largest buyer of Indian basmati, expected to decline While contingency plans exist, an executive told ET that "closure of the strait would shrink the global pool of available oil and gas. No matter how carefully you prepare, every economy would feel the impact of a supply crunch and price spike." Another executive highlighted the situation's intricacy, stating, "If India turns to West Africa for additional supplies, other importers are likely to follow." The international LNG trade lacks the maturity and flexibility seen in oil markets, with few options for supply diversification. The 2022 energy crisis highlighted this vulnerability when a former Gazprom subsidiary defaulted on its LNG delivery commitments to India's GAIL, compelling the company to reduce supplies to domestic consumers.
