Expectant fathers take pledge to support breastfeeding
The programme witnessed participation of 30 pregnant women and their families. As part of the novel approach, the fathers were seen taking a pledge to encourage and support exclusive breastfeeding for the newborns. The initiative aimed at reinforcing the role of family members in ensuring optimal infant feeding practices. Organised by GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR), the event was held in collaboration with the institution's women empowerment cell and departments of community medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.
A key highlight of the programme was a live demonstration using mannequins to showcase appropriate breastfeeding techniques. The event was attended by GIMSR Pro Vice-Chancellor B Geetanjali, dean SP Rao, and women empowerment cell chairperson V Bodhi Srividya, among others.

Odisha's first breastfeeding centre opens in capital
BHUBANESWAR: Deputy chief minister Pravati Parida inaugurated the state's first public breastfeeding centre at the Odisha State Commission for Women during the state-level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Parida said the state government will set up similar centres at railway stations, bus stands, markets and other public places that are frequented by women. 'These centres will provide a safe and peaceful space where new mothers can nurse their children comfortably in complete privacy,' said the deputy CM who is also the Women and Child Development (WCD) minister. In railway stations, particularly, a female attendant will be deployed at each station to assist nursing mothers, she informed. Parida further added that the government also has plans to open breastfeeding centres at all its offices and other public service centres where woman visit regularly for grievance redressal. Stating that breastfeeding is not just beneficial for newborns but also the new mothers, the deputy CM said it has significant health benefits like reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer in women and improved mental well-being for both mother and child.

1 2 Lucknow: In India as well in UP, where one in three mothers do not breastfeed their babies exclusively for six months, Varanasi's Sunita Devi has emerged as a shining example of the true generosity of a mother. Sunita, a resident of Subhadra village, who delivered twin boys on May 31 but lost one to medical complications, has not only fed her own baby but has also come forward to help others in need. In the past two months, Sunita has donated over 42 litres of excess breast milk to save at least 30 fragile babies in thoughts on breastfeeding and breast milk donation are also inspiring. "Motherhood is a blessing, and feeding one's baby is the first duty of a mother. And if nature has blessed someone with excess, donating it to some other baby in need is an act of humanity," Sunita told TOI. Recalling her elders' teachings, she said, "Mother's milk is believed to be an elixir against diseases; discarding it or wasting it is no less than a crime." Myths, misconceptions, and even cultural practices tend to prevent women from feeding their own babies. Numbers from the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) show that at least 35% of mothers do not feed their babies exclusively for six months. In this scenario, Sunita is not just a super mom; she is also a fairy godmother to many babies," said Dr Anu Sharma, a faculty member in paediatrics department and in-charge of NICU. "CLMC plays a vital role in promoting, supporting, and sustaining breastfeeding. It provides expert lactation management, addresses breastfeeding challenges, and helps save lives of vulnerable newborns through the provision of screened donor human milk," she said. Experts pointed out that breastfeeding was the cornerstone of optimal newborn care, particularly for preterm and low birthweight (LBW) infants. "In cases of preterm delivery, and at times due to various reasons, mothers do not have enough milk for their babies. It is here that donors like Sunita become a saviour," said Prof Ashok Kumar, former head of paediatrics, IMS-BHU. Dr Vaishnavi Pandey, project manager at community empowerment lab which is supporting IMS-BHU in strengthening CLMC, said that Sunita's generosity was even more praiseworthy as she donated milk despite her personal loss. "She was pregnant with two boys; one of them died a week after birth due to premature delivery complications. Salute to her selflessness," she said. General manager, child health, National Health Mission UP, Dr Milind Wardhan, said, "State govt organises activities to dispel myths around breastfeeding each year in the first week of Aug. Families should create a conducive environment for new mothers so that they can feed their babies without any inhibition."

Tamil Nadu Woman Donates 300 Litres Of Breast Milk, Helps Over 1000 Babies
Tamil Nadu: A 33-year-old homemaker from Kattur in Tiruchirappalli district here has donated over 300 litres of breast milk, helping save the lives of thousands of premature and critically ill infants, officials said. Selva Brindha, a mother of two, donated a total of 300.17 litres over 22 months—from April 2023 to February 2025—to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) Milk Bank. Her contribution accounted for nearly half of the total breast milk collected by the milk bank during the 2023-24 period, a hospital official said. Encouraged by a non-governmental organisation, Brindha's consistent service earned her a place in both the 'Asia Book of Records' and the 'India Book of Records'. In recognition of her remarkable contribution, officials at the milk bank will felicitate her during the valedictory of 'World Breastfeeding Week' on August 7.
