Hong Kong policeman admits hiding debts to cheat credit union out of HK$280,000
A Hong Kong policeman has admitted concealing the full extent of his debts to secure HK$280,000 (US$35,723) in loans from the force's credit union, claiming that his divorce and custody battle with his ex-wife had clouded his judgment.

Traffic officer Shum Sze-long, 45, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a count of fraud and one of attempted fraud for providing inaccurate and incomplete information to the Hong Kong Police Credit Union when he applied for two loans in 2020 and 2021.
Fanling Court heard that the now-suspended officer understated his monthly instalment of a loan previously extended to him by another financial institution when he borrowed HK$198,000 from the credit union on March 11, 2020.
Shum claimed that he was required to make a monthly repayment of HK$6,625, whereas the actual amount exceeded HK$15,000.
He also hid from the union the fact that he had signed up to an individual voluntary arrangement, a legally binding debt restructuring plan, when he sought another loan of HK$80,280 on May 24, 2021.

Defence counsel highlighted in mitigation the 'exceptional circumstances' of Shum's transgression, noting that the officer was emotionally disturbed by divorce proceedings with his ex-wife.

US hits Hong Kong and UAE firms with new round of Iran-related sanctions
The US has issued a new round of Iran-related sanctions targeting 10 individuals and 27 entities, including at least two companies it said were linked to Iran's national tanker company, the US Treasury Department said on Friday. Hong Kong police launch first drone patrols in urban areas
Hong Kong police have launched their first drone patrols in urban settings, with the unmanned aerial vehicles able to inspect an area the size of 13 football pitches in 25 minutes. The force on Friday deployed a drone to cover a 96,000 square metre area around Yau Ma Tei and Jordan in Kowloon. Carlos Shum Lap-chi, operations officer in Yau Tsim police district, said the patrol area bordered Dundas Street, Nathan Road and a section of Waterloo Road in Yau Ma Tei, as well as Ferry Street in Jordan. 'Our drone patrols can perform a few more rounds than [equivalent] ground patrols. The effectiveness is significant,' Shum said. The patrol followed the launch of a three-month pilot scheme for drones to inspect the border and Kowloon West late last month. As part of the pilot scheme, drone patrols in Yau Tsim, which covers Yau Ma Tei, Jordan and Tsim Sha Tsui, would first focus on crime hotspots, Shum said.
