IIF: Egypt's Economy Shows Unusual Resilience Amid Regional Tensions
The Institute of International Finance (IIF) has praised Egypt's economic resilience, stating that the country has shown "unusual strength" in the face of heightened geopolitical tensions following the recent military escalation between Israel and Iran.
In its latest report, the IIF said the negative impact on Egypt's financial markets was temporary and limited, highlighting that the Egyptian pound briefly weakened during the initial days of the crisis but soon regained partial strength, continuing its gradual depreciation trend.
Meanwhile, Egypt's sovereign risk premium remains near its lowest level in five years, reflecting improved investor sentiment and economic fundamentals.
Market Composure Amid Regional Volatility
The report attributed the relatively muted reaction of financial markets to what it called 'investor desensitization' toward regional geopolitical risks. The MENA region has witnessed two years of prolonged conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and the Red Sea, which have shaped investor behavior.
'Egypt's consistent market performance reflects a tangible improvement in its economic fundamentals,' the IIF noted.
Portfolio flows remained relatively stable, despite Egypt's historical vulnerability to volatile 'hot money' entering and exiting its high-yield treasury markets. The IIF observed that Egypt has experienced more episodes of capital flight exceeding one standard deviation than most emerging markets, including Turkey, Pakistan, and the Philippines.
However, the report highlighted that March 2024 economic reforms broke this pattern, attracting strong inflows into Egypt's debt market, driven by interest rates reaching 27.75%. Since then, only four months have recorded net outflows, and those were absorbed quickly by subsequent inflows.
Investor Confidence Grows, External Dependence Shrinks
The IIF said the recent stabilization reflects a shift in funding strategy, as Egypt gradually reduces reliance on volatile portfolio flows to cover its current account deficit, favoring foreign direct investment (FDI) and official financing instead.
This strategy has been supported by the IMF and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, both of which continue to provide essential financial backing.
The non-interventionist approach by Egypt's Central Bank in the foreign exchange market also earned praise, as it allowed the pound to adjust freely, enhancing currency resilience and investor trust in market liquidity.
Fiscal Strength Persists Despite Suez Setback
Egypt's fiscal performance remained strong, with revenue growth supporting the government's target of a 3.5% primary surplus of GDP for the 2024/2025 fiscal year, even as Suez Canal revenues weakened due to regional insecurity.
The IIF cautioned that the canal remains a major external vulnerability. Global shipping firms are unlikely to resume normal transit through the Suez Canal until at least three consecutive months of security stability in the Red Sea, pushing any full revenue recovery into early 2026.
Gas Disruptions and Summer Strain
The report also addressed the temporary gas export suspension from Israel in June, which led to power cuts in Egyptian factories, particularly in the steel and fertilizer sectors. The government prioritized residential electricity use amid tight supplies.
Although the measure was short-lived, the IIF warned that the summer season, combined with declining domestic production and reduced gas imports, may force difficult policy choices in the coming months.
Tourism and Reform Risks Loom
Tourism—a critical foreign currency source—has shown impressive resilience in recent years but remains at risk. Any direct attacks on Israel could impact tourism flows to Egypt's nearby resorts, the report warned.
Internally, the IIF identified slippage on economic reform as Egypt's greatest risk. The IMF postponed its fifth review of Egypt's loan program and merged it with the sixth review, scheduled for autumn 2025, due to concerns over delays in the privatization program.
The program is seen as a cornerstone of Egypt's international financing structure, particularly in attracting continued support from the IMF and Gulf states.
Debt Market Faces Structural Challenges
Despite progress, Egypt's public finances remain under pressure, largely due to the high cost of local debt. The government aims to extend the maturity profile of public debt by reducing its reliance on short-term treasury bills and increasing bond issuance.
However, recent auction data suggests slow progress, with yields on short-term instruments remaining elevated, and geopolitical tensions in June briefly lifting risk premiums before easing again.
'Any renewed escalation in the region could revive those premiums,' the IIF warned, potentially complicating Egypt's efforts to reduce debt servicing costs.

Egypt works to revive flax industry to boost local manufacturing
Egypt is working to revive its specialised industries, with a plan to restore the prominence of flax as a strategic, high-value raw material for the textile and manufacturing sectors, the country's public enterprise minister said. Speaking during a tour of the Tanta Flax and Oils Company, Minister of Public Enterprise Mohamed Shimy said there was a clear directive to integrate companies across the textile value chain to achieve sustainable growth based on the optimal use of local resources. Tanta Flax and Oils is a subsidiary of the state-owned Chemical Industries Holding Company. During his visit, Shimy reviewed the company's performance, production capacities, and future vision. He stressed the importance of advancing the flax industry as a cornerstone for integration with spinning and weaving companies and for supporting manufacturing industries, which would help increase local production and reduce the import bill. 'Egyptian flax is considered one of the finest types globally in terms of quality and purity, which provides a great opportunity to expand the local production and manufacturing of its derivatives, and to export it as a high-value product to global markets,' Shimy said. The minister toured the company's various flax, wood, twine, and oil factories, as well as its workshops and warehouses. He also met with workers on the production lines, affirming that they were the 'cornerstone of any real development process.' Shimy noted that Egypt's flax industry has deep historical roots, dating back to ancient Egyptian civilisation, and that Egypt was one of the first countries to cultivate flax and use it in textiles, medicine, and oils. He called for increasing the utilisation of production capacities, improving the work environment, and adhering to maintenance programmes to ensure sustainable and efficient performance. He also urged the company to enhance health and safety standards, study partnership opportunities with the private sector, and update its sales and marketing policies to open new local and international markets for its products.

39% Tariff on Swiss Imports Sends Shockwaves Through Luxury Watch Industry
Taarek Refaat Luxury watch collectors may want to think twice before stepping into a Rolex boutique this year. The Trump administration's newly announced 39% tariff on Swiss imports threatens to push U.S. retail prices for high-end timepieces sharply higher. The White House unveiled its updated tariff plans on Thursday, raising the proposed rate from the 31% announced earlier this year. The move caught the global watch community off guard, with Switzerland, home to brands like Rolex and Cartier, at the epicenter. Eugene Totonikoff, CEO of the Swiss Watch Market, told Business Insider the announcement was 'a real shock' and that 'its effects will be immediate.' Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed disappointment, saying the 39% rate far exceeded expectations. Leading brands, including Rolex, have already increased U.S. prices this year, likely in anticipation of higher duties, according to a July report from Morgan Stanley on the Swiss watch market. U.S. imports of Swiss goods have faced a baseline tariff of 10% since April, but the new 39% duty, set to take effect August 7, would dramatically raise costs for luxury watchmakers and could shrink U.S. inventories. While Switzerland can still negotiate with Washington, collectors and dealers may soon have to adjust to a new reality: higher prices or fewer available pieces. Joshua Ganjee, CEO of European Watch Company, predicts more buyers will turn to pre-owned luxury watches instead of newly imported Swiss models. 'For many American collectors, a 39% tariff makes new Swiss releases a luxury that's harder to justify,' he said. Morgan Stanley's report noted that second-hand watch dealers have already seen stronger demand this year as Swiss brands raised their U.S. prices. While pre-owned watch prices have generally fallen since mid-2022, that decline has slowed. However, demand pressure could soon reverse the trend. Although existing U.S. stock won't be hit by the new tariff, Totonikoff warned the secondary market will likely respond 'much faster' than major retailers. He expects pre-owned prices to climb by as much as 10% next month and up to 35% within six months as buyers shift toward available inventory. 'This is not just a tax,' Totonikoff said. 'It's a seismic event that will create a stark divide between the new and pre-owned watch markets.' read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Syria Begins Receiving Gas from Azerbaijan via Turkey
Taarek Refaat The first deliveries of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria through Turkish territory began Saturday, marking the launch of a regional energy corridor linking the three countries. The inauguration ceremony for the new gas transmission line was attended by Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov, and representatives from the Qatar Fund for Development, which is providing financial support for the project. Minister Al-Bashir hailed the new regional pipeline as a strategic step toward strengthening Syria's energy security. He said the project would directly improve electricity generation capacity, extend daily operating hours for power plants, and contribute to economic recovery and better living conditions, supporting efforts to bring displaced Syrians back to their communities. Under the first phase of the agreement, Syria will receive about 3.4 million cubic meters of gas per day, enabling the production of an additional 750 megawatts of electricity. This, Al-Bashir said, would add roughly four extra hours of electricity supply per day, fueling industrial growth and stimulating the broader economy. The gas deliveries are being facilitated under a trilateral cooperation framework supported by Qatar. Youssef Al-Youssef, director of the Syrian Gas Company, said the initial pumping began from the Harjalah border station north of Aleppo to the city's thermal power plant. Initial flows amount to 745,000 cubic meters per day and will be ramped up over the coming week to the full 3.4 million cubic meters. The supply will be distributed among the Aleppo thermal plant and gas-fired power stations in other provinces. The pipeline route runs from Harjalah through the Tounian plant, then to the Al-Biyarat area in Palmyra, where it branches to feed the Jandal and Tishreen power stations. Once fully operational, the gas is expected to generate between 750 and 800 megawatt-hours of electricity daily, strengthening the stability of Syria's national grid. While the infrastructure can currently handle the planned volumes, further upgrades will be needed if supply increases in the future. According to Turkey's Energy Minister, electricity exports to Syria are currently conducted through eight connection points. Plans are underway to increase this capacity by 25% initially, eventually more than doubling it. He also noted the potential to export up to 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to Syria, enough to meet the electricity needs of 5 million households. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
