39% Tariff on Swiss Imports Sends Shockwaves Through Luxury Watch Industry

Luxury watch collectors may want to think twice before stepping into a Rolex boutique this year. The Trump administration's newly announced 39% tariff on Swiss imports threatens to push U.S. retail prices for high-end timepieces sharply higher.
The White House unveiled its updated tariff plans on Thursday, raising the proposed rate from the 31% announced earlier this year. The move caught the global watch community off guard, with Switzerland, home to brands like Rolex and Cartier, at the epicenter.
Eugene Totonikoff, CEO of the Swiss Watch Market, told Business Insider the announcement was 'a real shock' and that 'its effects will be immediate.' Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed disappointment, saying the 39% rate far exceeded expectations.
Leading brands, including Rolex, have already increased U.S. prices this year, likely in anticipation of higher duties, according to a July report from Morgan Stanley on the Swiss watch market. U.S. imports of Swiss goods have faced a baseline tariff of 10% since April, but the new 39% duty, set to take effect August 7, would dramatically raise costs for luxury watchmakers and could shrink U.S. inventories.
While Switzerland can still negotiate with Washington, collectors and dealers may soon have to adjust to a new reality: higher prices or fewer available pieces.
Joshua Ganjee, CEO of European Watch Company, predicts more buyers will turn to pre-owned luxury watches instead of newly imported Swiss models. 'For many American collectors, a 39% tariff makes new Swiss releases a luxury that's harder to justify,' he said.
Morgan Stanley's report noted that second-hand watch dealers have already seen stronger demand this year as Swiss brands raised their U.S. prices. While pre-owned watch prices have generally fallen since mid-2022, that decline has slowed.
However, demand pressure could soon reverse the trend. Although existing U.S. stock won't be hit by the new tariff, Totonikoff warned the secondary market will likely respond 'much faster' than major retailers. He expects pre-owned prices to climb by as much as 10% next month and up to 35% within six months as buyers shift toward available inventory.
'This is not just a tax,' Totonikoff said. 'It's a seismic event that will create a stark divide between the new and pre-owned watch markets.'

Malaysia Targets AI, Green Tech Leadership in Southeast Asia by 2030

Ahmed Emam Malaysia has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to position itself as the leading hub for artificial intelligence (AI) and green technology in Southeast Asia by 2030, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced, TV BRICS reported. Presenting the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030) in Parliament, Anwar described the country's strategy as a 'once-in-a-generation' opportunity to capitalise on emerging digital and renewable energy sectors. He emphasised Malaysia's determination to become a globally influential player in AI, digital innovation, and sustainable industries. The government's plan centres on adopting and scaling up homegrown technological innovations to drive economic growth. Key priorities include developing strategic digital assets such as AI, data analytics, and government digital systems, alongside boosting research, development, commercialisation, and innovation under the 'Made by Malaysia' initiative. By 2030, Malaysia aims to extend 5G coverage to 98% of populated and industrial areas, including rural regions. The plan also envisions producing at least 5,000 new digital entrepreneurs and integrating AI applications across multiple economic sectors. To support these targets, the government will introduce AI education from an early age, strengthen intellectual property frameworks, provide strategic funding, and foster cross-sector collaboration between industry, academia, and government bodies. read more UAE's Lunar Mission Delayed to Tomorrow Twitter Lifts Trump's Account Ban Scientists Find Evidence Of 10،000 Black Holes Surrounding The Center Of The Milky Way Galaxy Greenhouse In Antarctica Able To Grow Vegetables Without Soil Or Sunlight Moving Over China: U.S. Is Again Home to World's Speediest Supercomputer Technology The 10 most expensive cars in the world Technology Top 10 fastest cars in the world Technology Lasers Could Make Computers 1 Million Times Faster Technology Smart technology taking control of our lives News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Rana Atef The United Arab Emirates (UAE) became Zimbabwe's leading export market in June 2025. It had more than half of the country's total export value, according to figures released by the Zimbabwe Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT). New Ziana and TV BRICS reported this. The UAE snapped up a dominant 54.8 percent, followed by South Africa with 23.5 percent and China with 8.3 percent. Together, the three countries made up approximately 87 per cent of Zimbabwe's total exports for the month. Zimbabwe's exports also reached markets in regional blocs such as Southern African Development Community (SADC), The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Within SADC, nickel mattes dominated exports at 42 per cent, followed by coal products (8.8 per cent), semi-processed gold (7.9 per cent), and chromium ores (5.8 per cent). Rana Atef The UAE, Malaysia, and Rwanda established a strategic partnership to enhance and adopt AI across the Global South, TV BRICS reported the news. The agreement, made under the framework of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) global network, seeks to promote ethical AI practices and governance that will support economic and societal progress in developing nations, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS. As part of the collaboration, the three countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding to broaden the scope of the C4IR AI Fellowship Programme, originally launched by the UAE and Rwanda during the 2024 World Economic Forum in Davos. Malaysia's inclusion in the initiative marks a significant step towards deeper international cooperation, particularly in fostering sustainable development through AI innovation, the report emphasised. The partnership will facilitate talent exchange, collaborative projects, and the joint creation of frameworks for responsible AI governance led by nations in the Global South. Key figures present at the signing included the UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Omar Al Olama, and Malaysian Minister for Digital, Gobind Singh Deo, who highlighted the importance of bridging global expertise to ensure inclusive digital transformation.
