Delhi Govt Clears Night Shift Policy For Women; Safety Protocols Made Mandatory In Shops, Workplaces

The proposal, following prior discussions, will now be sent to the lieutenant governor for approval With an aim to boost women's participation in Delhi's workforce and to make the national capital a round-the-clock business hub, the city government on Tuesday gave its nod to the night shift policy for women in shops and commercial establishments. In an official statement, the Rekha Gupta-led government said that currently, Sections 14, 15, and 16 of the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954, prohibit women from working between 9 pm and 7 am during summers and between 8 pm and 8 am during winters. L-G nod needed The proposal, following prior discussions, will now be sent to the lieutenant governor for approval. To implement it, exemptions will be made under Sections 14, 15, and 16 of the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954. The forthcoming amendment will remove these restrictions, enabling women to work night shifts across the city. 'In a major step towards empowering women and enhancing their self-reliance, the Delhi Government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken a landmark decision to allow women to work in night shifts (24×7) in shops and commercial establishments," the statement reads. Women's safety a priority Highlighting the safety framework, the chief minister stated that stringent measures are being implemented to ensure women's security during night shifts, including compulsory transportation facilities and comprehensive CCTV surveillance. She noted that similar permissions are already in place in Haryana, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. To safeguard women working on night shifts, a comprehensive set of conditions will be mandatory for all establishments. 'Written consent of female employees will be required prior to assigning night shifts. Workplaces must have CCTV surveillance, female security guards, and secure transport facilities. Each establishment must also constitute an Internal Complaints Committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act. Furthermore, restrooms, toilets, lockers, and other basic amenities must be provided," the government stated. Additional conditions include mandatory electronic payment of wages (bank/ECS), provision of all statutory benefits, including ESI, bonus, provident fund, as well as weekly offs and overtime compensation. Gupta stated that this decision will not only contribute to making Delhi a 24×7 business hub but also significantly enhance women's participation in the workforce and improve the city's ease of doing business rankings. 'This policy would play a pivotal role in establishing Delhi as a 24×7 business hub and underscores the government's commitment to women's empowerment and economic independence," she said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. AAP, BJP spar over flooding, Cong attacks Delhi govt too

New Delhi: After Tuesday's rain, AAP slammed BJP-led Delhi govt for "turning the capital into a pool", prompting the party in power to claim that the situation was brought under control within a few hours by joint efforts of the govt and Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Sharing videos of waterlogging on social media platforms, AAP functionaries claimed that the city completely "collapsed" within five months of BJP forming the govt. "Despite tall claims and promises of proper management by CM Rekha Gupta and PWD minister Parvesh Verma, even a brief spell of rain on Tuesday morning was enough to bring the national capital to a standstill," the party alleged. "Waterlogging inundated not just the inner streets but also the city's most posh localities, exposing once again the complete failure of BJP's so-called 'four-engine' govt to deliver even basic civic infrastructure. " AAP claimed that within days of lieutenant governor VK Saxena and Public Works Department minister Verma publicly congratulating each other for their "so-called efforts" to prevent waterlogging at ITO, the stretch was submerged once again on Tuesday. "This is ITO. On July 9, LG and PWD minister came here to inspect anti-waterlogging work and patted each other's back. Now that it's flooded again, please accept my congratulations too," Delhi AAP convener Saurabh Bharadwaj posted on X. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi He also posted videos of waterlogged roads in Connaught Place, Tibetan Market on Janpath Road, and near RML Hospital. Sharing CP's video, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal posted on X, "When this is the condition of Connaught Place, the heart of Delhi, it's not hard to imagine the state of the rest of Delhi. Just 10 minutes of rain and the roads have turned into ponds. In five months, where has BJP brought Delhi to? Is this the speed of the 'four-engine' govt?" Leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly Atishi said even Civil Lines— home to both LG and CM—was waterlogged. She also posted videos of waterlogging in several parts of the city, including Panchkuian Road, Kamla Nagar Market, Sadar Bazar, Ambedkar Stadium near Delhi Gate, and Pragati Maidan. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said heavy rainfall continued across Delhi for over three hours, leading to waterlogging in some areas. "Due to the efforts of Delhi govt and MCD, the situation was brought under control within just a few hours," he said. Sachdeva claimed timely cleaning of major drains and sewers on key roads resulted in "significant improvement", unlike the situation in 2024 and earlier years, when even a light rain would flood roads for days. "The residents of Delhi felt the difference brought by the change in govt. The chief minister, the ministers, the mayor, BJP MLAs and councillors, and the NDMC vice-chairperson, stepped onto the streets and ensured that waterlogging was cleared within hours of the rain," he claimed. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav slammed BJP govt for the "lack of preparedness" to tackle the monsoon chaos. "Despite giving extended deadlines, PWD failed to complete the desilting work," he alleged.

Dahlmeier injured in Karakoram mountaineering accident

Lahore, July 29 (UNI) Two-time Olympic gold medallist and former German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier has been seriously injured in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range, her management confirmed today. According to a statement, the 31-year-old was climbing with a partner on Sunday, July 28, when she was caught in a rockfall at an altitude of approximately 5,700 metres. The accident occurred around noon local time. "Her partner immediately alerted emergency services, and a rescue operation began. However, due to the remoteness of the location, a helicopter was only able to reach the site on the morning of July 29," the statement said. An international rescue operation is currently underway, with no further details yet released on her condition. Dahlmeier, who retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25, was a standout athlete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, where she clinched gold in the 7.5km sprint and 10km pursuit, along with a bronze in the 15km individual event. In addition to her Olympic success, she has won 15 World Championship medals, including seven golds, making her one of Germany's most decorated winter sports athletes. Further updates are awaited as the rescue effort progresses. UNI BDN SSP
