Peranakan-inspired designer transforms 49-year-old Ampang school into a lifestyle hub

Yahoo30-01-2025
Recently partially-opened in Ampang, The Campus is a lifestyle community hub transformed from the old International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) compound. After ISKL moved to Ampang Hilir, the space was reimagined into a buzzing destination that's equal parts fun and functional.
Helming this project is Singaporean-born Dutch designer Lisette Scheers, the creative genius behind Nala Designs, a Peranakan-inspired brand celebrating Malaysia's rich heritage. Think bold, vibrant prints gracing everything from notebooks and tote bags to wallpaper and pillow covers.
The Campus seamlessly blends top-notch sports facilities, education centres, retail spaces, and entertainment under one roof. The former school's basketball courts, gymnasiums, and sprawling grounds are now repurposed as the heart of this lively hub. The swimming pool isn't currently open to the public, but you can still enjoy a lively game of basketball or football.
Whether you're here for a good meal or a great time, The Campus has you covered. Grab a bite at Jibby Chow, Jinjja Chicken, or Fowlboys Diner, sip artisanal drinks at NikoNeko Matcha or Coffeeboy Club, and stock up on your favourites at Qra (my go-to for affordable condiments, pickles, and pasta).
Keep the little ones happy at Kids Nation, a playful haven with an interactive playland and a library. For retail therapy, you'll find over 80 brands, including Nala Designs, alongside dance studios like Amare Dance Academy and wellness spots like Tamo Beauty Lounge and Rise & Plunge. Need a health check? Head to Dental Days or Darla Clinic & Health Care Centre.
With its dynamic mix of dining, shopping, wellness, and recreational gems, The Campus is set to become the ultimate hangout destination in Ampang. Whether you're looking for a delicious meal, a unique shopping experience, a place to relax and recharge, or somewhere to entertain the kids, this lifestyle hub has it all.
Stay tuned for its full opening and get ready to experience all the exciting offerings waiting to be discovered!

A shopping spree is basically calling your name while Lands' End has up to 40% off sitewide, plus free shipping and up to 70% off sale items. It's great news for those who want to add more pieces to their summer wardrobe: think swimsuits and linens suited for your upcoming vacation plans. Or if you simply want to bring some cheery colors into your rotation, there's no shortage of summery dresses on deck. The sale went live today and runs through Aug. 18. Load up your cart with our favorite Lands' End clothing deals ahead and use code FREESHIP to save even more. Lands' End Men's Relaxed Linen Shirt Keep loading up your summer wardrobe with this lightweight linen button-down. It brings a crisp, polished look to a pair of men's shorts like chinos or deck shorts — great for any tropical vacation you might have on the books. Lands' End 7-Inch Men's Seersucker Beach to Boardwalk Pull-On Shorts These stretchy board shorts transition seamlessly from lake days to sunset dinners with their summer-ready look and practical features, including a water-repellent finish and UPF 50 fabric. They also have a soft liner that fits like boxer briefs. Lands' End Men's Short-Sleeve Textured Tipped Sweater Polo A bit more elevated than a cotton polo, this top made from a sweater-like fabric weaves different-colored threads along the hems and collars for more intricate detail. Grab one in any three on-sale colors for a Palm Springs-inspired shirt. Lands' End Men's Super-T Short-Sleeve T-Shirt With Pocket If you prefer sticking to the basics in the heat, rotate in this classic T-shirt that features a chest pocket. The brand claims its fabric is both soft and substantial, so it can hold up better to multiple wears. Available in navy, khaki and cream, they're a versatile pick for work or social events. Lands' End Sleeveless Cambric Bubble-Hem Midi Dress Add this adorable, newly added bubble-hem dress to your closet. It features cinched shoulder straps and a smocked back for more comfortable wear. I also appreciate its playful silhouette that flares, combined with its baby-blue hue. Lands' End Tugless X-Back One-Piece Swimsuit Dozens of swimsuits are marked down during the Lands' End sale, but you can't go wrong with this bestselling one-piece lauded for staying put. One major pro: You can choose from regular, petite, plus-size and long torso styles as well as cup sizes up to DDD, so you can feel as good as you look. Lands' End Women's Oxford Shirt I think a plain white button-down is a quintessential clothing piece to have year-round. It styles well atop a plain tank top and can dress up anything from jeans to baggy athletic shorts. Sport one as a cover-up or iron it out for work 'fits. Lands' End Women's Cotton Tank Top For as little as $15, this basic tank top can be a staple in your wardrobe. It comes in both striped and floral patterns to bring some pep to your attire, or you can get it in versatile neutrals like white and black for a solid base layer. Our readers frequently keep an eye out for clothing deals at Lands' End. The fan-favorite brand always stocks up on seasonal go-tos that suit pretty much every event on your social and work calendar. During today's sale, everything from swimsuits to dresses to button-downs is enjoying the savings, and in a move we can't recall seeing from the coastal outfitter in some time, there's also free shipping on all orders — no minimum spend required. So, if you've been looking for an excuse to snag some back-to-school clothing deals, you can get classroom-ready chinos or work-appropriate dresses for less. Or you can even plan for your next beachside vacation with the array of discounted one-pieces, board shorts and more. Our deals team has over a decade of combined commerce journalism experience. Rikka Altland, Jacqueline Saguin and Elena Matarazzo source the deals for the day each morning to curate one-offs and retailer-specific roundups of the best sales to shop. Starting Over? These 6 Gifts Feel Like Home.

In this edition of The Gift, we're talking about the value of a gift that feels like home — especially during times of uncertainty. Plus, tapered candles to elevate any table. Recently, I chatted with LA-based cookbook author Molly Baz, who, for the past six months, has been rebuilding after losing her house to the Altadena fire. For Molly, the experience has been clarifying: When you're starting over, stuff that feels like you, even small things, can go far — grounding you in the moment, reassuring your senses, restoring a feeling of home. While speaking with her, I was brought back to my own time of rebuilding, when my marriage ended. I have a distinct memory of ferrying boxes of my old life over the threshold of my new apartment. Once I'd unpacked, it was at once startling and comforting to look around and see my old life surrounding me in this new one. As I rebuilt my routines, I was relieved to touch these objects and feel them in my hand. A mug that for years held my morning coffee. A tall glass, its curves catching the light, reminding me to drink water. A sunny Dutch oven, promising bounty. And my books, like bricks to build a new home. These things reassured me when my sense of self felt brittle and strange. There are some special heirlooms that follow you throughout life, even when life itself looks uncertain or unfamiliar. And I've found that gifting or re-gifting them — to loved ones or to yourself — can sometimes help provide a surprising sense of grounding during whatever sort of rebuilding life throws our way: These LA-designed, Japan-made mugs were crucial staples of Molly Baz's breakfast routine, and among the first things she restocked after the fires. They're the perfect size for lattes and cappuccinos, and are both modular and stackable. Says Molly: 'I remember getting those Hasami mugs and being like … my morning feels right again.' This buy-it-for-life watering can produces a steady flow that's perfect for reaching a plant's roots, and develops a lovely patina over time. As Wirecutter writer Jackie Reeve says, 'You can keep a Haws can for decades because it works so well and looks so good as it ages.' Head of newsletters Sofia Sokolove says that this eyecatching mesh fruit bowl, gifted to her after a breakup nearly a decade ago, has fit perfectly as a colorful centerpiece in each of her three kitchens since. She loves its versatile shape and size, and how a bright orange or banana looks peeking through the mesh. Another restock for Molly: This luxe candle, which had been in every room of the old house, filling the space — and now the rooms in her new home — with notes of cedar, birchwood, smoke, and musk. For anyone celebrating a new home or honoring an old one — newlyweds, downsizers, college grads, or first-apartment dwellers — our gifts experts recommend this custom house portrait. Just submit a high-res photo of the house, and choose the right medium: watercolors, oils, what have you. The result? An eminently charming, accurate, and instant heirloom piece of artwork. Brighten bookshelves or side tables with this petite Bartlett pear vase, complete with a leafy green accent. As we put it in our guide to the best housewarming gifts: 'Aesthetic loveliness aside, pears symbolize beneficent abundance, an ideal sentiment for friends christening a new home.' How lovely. Big, disruptive changes are doorways you're forced to walk through. A major move. Parenthood. Disaster. Loss. Illness. Divorce. We have no way of knowing what will unfold on the other side, or how to reconstruct ourselves into the same-but-different person we need to be. In such moments, things won't save us. But it would also be wrong to say they don't matter. A potted plant roots us in a moment of care and beauty. A platter urges us to invite friends over. A spatula reminds us of our competence. The things we gravitate toward might be clues to the life we want now. Maybe even the life we need. Why not follow them?

37 Pieces Of Dopamine Decor

A fanciful mushroom kitchen timer, which is so much more endearing than using your phone or screaming at Alexa. It also has a glowing 4.4-star rating on Amazon, which is kinda unheard of for novelty timers. A kitschy cherry toilet brush and matching shower curtain charms to make your bathroom feel like the sweetest place to be. Promising review (for the toilet brush): "Totally matched my cherry decor for my business' bathroom (art gallery). It made me laugh. It's art and a toilet brush! Not sure who else needs a toilet brush shaped like a cherry. Apparently, I did, though." —Rudy PGet the toilet brush for $16.99 (available in two colors) and 12 cherry charms for $14.59 from Amazon. A Georgian-inspired lover's eye painting that'll be the perfect addition to your growing gallery wall. *considers getting a lover's eye portrait of my dog* A set of book-shaped sponges — with punny names like Moby Dish, Pride and Prejudish, and The Sponge Also Rises — that'll make cleaning kind of fun. How novel! A Lego cherry blossom kit for decor you can build yourself. The 430-piece set comes with everything you need to build two stems, and at less than $10, it's a steal compared to most Lego kits. And because you need somewhere to put your Lego creation: an iridescent vase shaped like a stack of dice that will roll its way into your heart and onto the coffee table. A sad duck night-light ready to cheer you up — because at least you've never felt so down you've melted into the table. A decorative seashell pillow giving dreamy '70s beach house vibes to your home. Even if you don't live near the water, this will bring you one step closer. A match holder and striker that lets you have your cake and light it too. You can place six matches around the cake to mimic the look of birthday candles, and the whipped cream lid comes off to reveal storage inside — what you put in there is your business. ;) A mini ceramic bathtub complete with drainage holes you can use to hold your soap, sponge, houseplant, loose change, etc. Buy a bunch and *clean up* all your loose knickknacks. A set of rainbow wineglasses ensuring every guest can have their favorite long as they all have different favorite colors. If a fight breaks out for the green glass, be assured that — at less than $10 a glass — you can always buy a second set. And because we all love brightly-colored kitchenware, a color-coded Cuisinart knife set that looks cute *and* helps you avoid cross-contamination at a quick glance. I would say this also saves time having to pull each knife out of the block to check the blade, but *obviously* you're going to have these on display. A three-tier floor lamp with removable ring lights you can rearrange orrrr practice your juggling routine with. Reviewers note you should keep it out of high-traffic areas where it can be bumped, but if one LED ring does fall, there's a three-year warranty. A "Gracula" garlic crusher that ironically helps you with one of the most tedious chores in the kitchen. Just throw in the peeled cloves, twist, and feel grateful you Let the Right One your kitchen. An upside-down cake chandelier complete with cherries, sprinkles, and dangling crystals. This will look soooo sweet in your home! A pretty satin bow throw pillow for people who want to keep their coquette vibes going even while they sleep. A book-shaped flower vase you'll want to write a whole novella about. There's just so much to love about it, from its minimalist design to its slim, easy-to-store shape. A paw-shaped chair cushion, because who doesn't want to be lovingly cradled in a kitten's paw? A 3D-printed, modular Gothic tower plant pole offering a romantic place for your pothos or ivy to climb up. There's a watering tower on top and a column base that fits securely in the planter. A sweet little candle warmer that shines a light on your favorite candle. The 50-watt warming bulb provides a flame-free way to enjoy a well-scented home. Bonus: It also extends the life of your candle. Or a paw-some mug warmer to heat up drinks, candles, and wax melts. There's a little screen on the cat's forehead that tells you the temperature so you can keep your drink or candle at the *purrfect* temperature. A dino nugget plush because stuffed animals make the best throw pillows. Now you can just add some stuffed peas and a plush pile of mashed potatoes to hide them under. A 3D-printed miniature bookshelf bookend so you can have even more room for knickknacks. Personally, I would fill it with tiny books for an Xzibit-approved meta-decor move. A fruit tart bed because your little blueberry needs the perfect place to rest their head — a kiwi pillow! You gotta love pet products that double as decor. A hummingbird lamp with three brightness levels and a touch sensor that doubles as an aroma diffuser if you add 3–4 drops of essential oil to the top of its head. Name something that would make you feel more like Cinderella! A darling strawberry vase you can fill with flowers, pens, kitchen tools — or, if you wanna go for realism, a leafy houseplant. A bunch of floral-scented grape soap that pretty much blows all other decorative soap out of the water. Handmade by a mother and son with olive oil and natural fragrances, these vegan soaps can be displayed in a bowl or hung anywhere you want some nice, subtle scents. A helpful little mouse carrying a light for you — thank you, mouse! To show their appreciation, one reviewer even knit a little outfit for it. A pretty tea cup set that looks like your mug is floating on a cloud. How delicate! How dreamy! Time to make an elaborate latte and take 100 photos of you drinking it. A disco ball diffuser so your next dance party can smell like, really good. Add your favorite fragrance, pick one of seven color settings, and watch as the diffuser spins and puts on a light show. A charming waterproof shelf liner to protect your fridge from stains (or hide existing ones) and give it a little glow-up. Who knew the inside of a fridge could be A fox wall sconce that feels like it belongs in a fairytale cottage. What I'm implying is that your home could be that fairytale cottage. Itty-bitty, collapsible storage crates in soothing pastel colors to give your knickknacks the vinyl record treatment. Listen, you don't have to throw away your mountain of pilfered condiment packets, but they'd look a lot nicer in one of these. A three-pack of color drip candles that reveal more and more hues the longer they're lit. What a delightful surprise! Sweet lil' flower magnets offering some springy charm all year round. I highly recommend sticking these to your locker or filing cabinet to make school/work hours feel less bleh. An adorable frog couple enjoying a relaxing afternoon with tea, cake, and a good book. Having this charming figurine set around is likely to put everyone in a peaceful mood — even your fish if you place them in an aquarium! And a flower bath mat that's soooo fluffy, you'll find yourself visiting the bathroom just to step on it. 🎵 Will you pardon me and tiptoe through the tulips with me? 🎵
