David Peterson fans 10 as Mets blow out Nationals
Peterson (8-5) permitted one run on four hits and one walk while improving to 7-1 vs. the Nationals in his career. On June 11, he tossed his first career complete game in a 5-0 victory over Washington.
New York's Jeff McNeil hit a two-run double in the third inning and belted a solo homer in the ninth to cap a three-hit performance.
Brett Baty went deep to lead off the sixth inning and Juan Soto did the same in the seventh to help the Mets win their third straight game following a 2-14 slide.
The game was the first in major league history to feature two Venezuelan-born managers squaring off: New York's Carlos Mendoza and Washington interim skipper Miguel Cairo.
New York's Francisco Lindor, the reigning National League Player of the Week, doubled with one out in the third inning before Soto walked. Lindor came around to score the game's first run on Brandon Nimmo's single to left-center field.
McNeil plated a pair of runs with a two-out double to right field before Vientos gave New York a 5-0 lead by depositing a 0-2 curveball from Jake Irvin (8-8) over the wall in left-center field. The homer was Vientos' ninth of the season and second in as many games.
Baty sent a first-pitch fastball from Irvin over the wall in right-center field in the sixth, and Soto rudely greeted reliever Konnor Pilkington by clearing the wall in left.
Washington's Dylan Crews tripled to lead off the eighth inning. Andres Chaparro walked, and Crews scored when Peterson induced Brady House to ground into 5-4-3 double play. Peterson struck out Jacob Young to end the inning and his outing.
Irvin fell to 0-3 in four starts this month after permitting six runs on eight hits in six innings. He fanned three and walked three.

August 20 - Kyle Schwarber doubled, homered and had five RBIs, giving him an MLB-leading 109 this season, as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 11-2 on Wednesday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep. Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo (12-6) allowed one run on three hits over six innings. The left-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out 12. The National League East-leading Phillies, who won for the fifth time in their past six games, got big contributions from the top and bottom of their batting order. Leadoff hitter Trea Turner went 5-for-6 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs to spark a 20-hit attack. After Rodriguez went deep in the top of the first, the Phillies tied the score at 1-all in the bottom of the inning as Turner tripled and Schwarber hit a sacrifice fly. Tigers score early, go on to sweep series from Astros
August 20 - Dillon Dingler had an RBI triple during a six-run first and the host Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros with a 7-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Dingler also doubled while scoring two runs for the American League Central Division leaders. Javier Baez contributed two hits and two RBIs, while Spencer Torkelson added an RBI double. Winning pitcher Charlie Morton (9-10) allowed two runs, three hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings. Brenan Hanifee, Tyler Holton and Rafael Montero combined for three innings of scoreless relief. Detroit has won nine of its last 11 games. Mauricio Dubon's two-run homer ended Houston's 31-inning scoreless drought. The Astros were shut out in four of their previous five games. The weather system is expected to stay in the Atlantic, but that is still causing chaos. Beaches have been closed for the foreseeable future due to fears over the tide. The US Open first-round singles bracket begins this coming Sunday. However, the delays are set to cause huge issues with qualifying if games cannot be completed. A warning on big screens around the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center warned fans of the delays.
