Malaysia pushing for progress on South China Sea Code of Conduct, Myanmar Five-Point Consensus
The minister emphasised that Malaysia is also focused on deepening ties with strategic partners in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Europe, the United States (US) and beyond.
'The recent ASEAN–GCC–China Summit has also positioned our region as a bridge between Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.
'This trilateral partnership offers an opportunity to combine China's technology and infrastructure capacity, the GCC's energy and capital, and ASEAN's market and industrial dynamism into a new engine for growth and resilience,' he said in his keynote address at the ASEAN Business Forum 2025, here today.
The speech was delivered on Tengku Zafrul's behalf by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority's (MIDA) chief executive officer, Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid.
Tengku Zafrul said the newly established ASEAN Geoeconomics Task Force, co-chaired by Malaysia and Indonesia, is now fully operational.
He noted that the task force's mandate is to provide real-time economic analysis, scenario modelling, and coordinated policy recommendations to help ASEAN anticipate and mitigate economic risks and, where appropriate, turn them into opportunities.
'Additionally, our ministers have reaffirmed an unwavering commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) at its core.
'Our joint statements underscore a mature, forward-looking approach as ASEAN will respond to external shocks not with retaliation, but with deeper engagement, open dialogue, and collective solutions,' he said.
Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul added that ASEAN's true superpower is the region's unity, resilience, and pragmatism.
'As the world undergoes a profound realignment, ASEAN's unity and centrality matter more than ever.
'From the Asian Financial Crisis to the pandemic to the present day, ASEAN has shown the world that collective action, trust, and shared purpose are the bedrock of our success,' he added.

KUALA LUMPUR : Bung Moktar Radin, who was ordered to enter his defence on charges of corruption over a RM150 million Felcra investment almost three years ago, is expected to take the witness stand at the sessions court on Monday. M Athimulan, the lawyer for the Kinabatangan MP and Sabah Umno chief, confirmed the matter. 'Yes, the defence will begin their case on Monday,' he told FMT in a text message. The trial, to be presided over by sessions court judge Rosli Ahmad, is also fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Sept 2, 2022, then sessions court judge Rozina Ayob ordered Bung and his wife, Zizie Izette Abdul Samad, to enter their defence after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against them. Zizie is charged with abetting her husband. The High Court acquitted them of the charges following a revision application after it ruled that Rozina had erred in calling them to answer the charges. Last year, the Court of Appeal allowed the prosecution's appeal to order the couple to enter the defence, saying that the revision application was premature. Three months ago, Bung and Zizie failed to set aside the appellate court's decision. Bung, the non-executive chairman of Felcra at the time, was charged with two counts of receiving bribes of RM2.2 million and RM262,500 as an inducement to obtain Felcra's approval to invest RM150 million in Public Mutual unit trusts. He is alleged to have accepted bribes from Norhaili Madhi, a Public Mutual investment agent, through Zizie. He was also charged with receiving a bribe of RM337,500 from Norhaili under Zizie's name at the same location on June 19, 2015. Zizie faces three charges of abetting Bung in the commission of the alleged offences. Lawyer K Kumaraendran is appearing for Zizie, while deputy public prosecutors Law Chin How and Fadhly Zamry are representing the prosecution.

Genting Malaysia's loss-making US unit sells assets for RM2.2bil
Genting Malaysia's US$41 million (RM173 million) buyout of Empire Resorts raised eyebrows among some investors and analysts. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : Genting Malaysia Bhd's (GENM) loss-making US subsidiary Empire Resorts Inc (ERI) is disposing its non-casino properties in New York state for US$525 million (RM2.2 billion) to eliminate its debt, and purchase land. GENM said the proposal will 'deliver long-term strategic and financial benefits' to ERI as the sale proceeds enables it to fully redeem its US$300 million (RM1.3 billion) bond due in November 2026. This will make ERI – which has been recording losses for over two decades – debt-free. 'The proposal will reinforce GENM's long-term commitment to improve its competitive position within the New York state gaming market and the broader northeastern US region,' it said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today. GENM said the restructuring will lower financing costs, boost ERI's assets and add RM42.1 million in extra cash. The deal will see ERI sell the 332-room Resorts World Catskills and the 99-room Alder Hotel, the 18-hole Monster golf course, the 2,500-seat RWC Epicenter, and restaurants to a local development body, Sullivan County Resort Facilities Local Development Corp (SCRFLDC). Part of the sale proceeds will be used to buy 1,554.6 acres of land from EPR Properties for RM848 million. EPR is a US-listed real estate investment trust (REIT) that invests in entertainment properties. The land includes 420 acres upon which Resorts World Catskills' assets sit, and 1,134.6 acres of vacant land with potential for future development. ERI will also enter into a land lease with SCRFLDC through Feb 15, 2066 for all land under the non-gaming assets, and manage the assets under a 20-year agreement, with two automatic five-year renewals. ERI and SCRFLDC are currently finalising terms for the sale, lease and management agreements. Controversial US$41 million buyout This exercise comes on the heels of GENM's controversial US$41 million (RM173 million) buyout of the remaining 51% of ERI it did not own from Kien Huat Realty III Ltd. This is the vehicle of the Lim family led by Lim Kok Thay, the son of Genting founder Lim Goh Tong. Under the deal announced some three months ago, Kien Huat Realty III assigned a US$39.7 million (RM167 million) debt to GENM that ERI owed to it. Some analysts labelled the acquisition 'expensive and potentially profit-dilutive', and concerns were raised that it was an unfavourable related party transaction (RPT). Bursa also grilled GENM over the buyout, slapping the gaming and resort operator with 20 questions on the deal. According to its 2024 annual report, Kok Thay, 73, and his son, Keong Hui, 40, have a deemed interest of 49.35% in GENM as of March 17, 2025. Kok Thay is GENM's deputy chairman and chief executive while Keong Hui is the deputy chief executive and executive director. GENM shares rose 3 sen or 1.5% to RM2.02 today, valuing the group at RM12 billion. Year to date, the stock is down 10.2%.

"The ceasefire agreement, followed by the extraordinary Thailand-Cambodia General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 7, reflected not only Malaysia's constructive diplomacy but also Thailand's confidence in "a friend like Malaysia', she said. She made the remarks in her keynote address at the Thailand-Malaysia Strategic Dialogue, held on Friday and co-hosted by the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia. On Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship, Lada pointed out that it presents a timely opportunity to advance regional priorities and strengthen Aseancentrality. "Asean remains our common platform and shield. With Malaysia leading in 2025, we have the chance to promote unity in diversity with people at its core,' she said. As Thailand's Asean Chairmanship in 2028 will follow the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2027, Lada said this offers a strategic opportunity for both countries to coordinate more closely. "Together, we can ensure continuity in Asean's agenda, push forward connectivity projects, and deepen regional integration. We must also project a strong voice on the global stage to shape a prosperous future,' she added. On Thailand-Malaysia Strategic Dialogue, Lada said discussions are expected to help guide the development of the Thailand-Malaysia Strategic Vision 2027. She outlined three key areas of focus namely strengthening political trust through sustained dialogue, deepening economic resilience through trade, investment and innovation, and improving infrastructure and people-to-people mobility. "By completing physical and logistics infrastructure and enhancing digital and border linkages, we can future-proof our economies and empower border communities,' she said. Meanwhile, ISIS Malaysia Chairman Dr Mohd Faiz Abdullah said building trust between Thailand and Cambodia will be a difficult but essential step following the border tensions. He said while ceasefires had taken place and efforts to develop more coherent monitoring mechanisms were ongoing, the path ahead remained susceptible to risks, especially if political will falters. He said Malaysia's role in easing tensions last month, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim with the support of other leaders, was far from routine, but driven by its commitment as Asean Chair and as a brotherly neighbour and friend to both Thailand and Cambodia "There may be reasons for us not to take the next steps together, but there is always a greater reason to move forward together, hand in hand,' he said. - Bernama
