Vanessa Sarie, AC Guinto earn Player of the Week honors as NCAA volleyball nears homestretch

Colegio de San Juan de Letran and Arellano University's future looks bright with two young players carrying the torch for their respective schools.
Rookie sensation Vanessa Sarie and third-year standout AC Guinto are showing that the Lady Knights and the Chiefs are in good hands with breakout performances in the NCAA Season 100 volleyball tournament.
The 19-year-old Sarie smashed the NCAA scoring record after detonating for 37 points laced with 23 receptions against the Arellano Lady Chiefs last May 16, helping the Lady Knights pull off an emotional 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 17-15 win that helped them preserve a seven-game winning streak.
That outing allowed Sarie to join an elite rank of players who previously set a league scoring milestone like legends Grethcel Soltones, Honey Royse Tubino, and Mary Rhose Dapol, as well as current San Beda star Angel Habacon.
A week before etching her name in history, Sarie also stuffed the stat sheet when she poured 17 points, 12 digs, and 12 receptions in Letran's three-set romp of San Sebastian, 25-21, 25-22, 25, 25-23, last May 6.
The 21-year-old Guinto, meanwhile, continued to be a steady force for the Arellano Chiefs.
The high-leaping outside spiker led the show in Arellano's new resurgence after dropping 20 points and 20 receptions in their 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 win over Letran last Friday and churning out 11 markers, 15 receptions, and four digs in their shock sweep of defending champion Perpetual on Sunday, 25-16, 28-26, 25-20.
The twin victories allowed the Chiefs to bounce back from a tough loss to De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde a week prior, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 32-30, where Guinto top-scored with 19 points and grabbed 19 receptions. More importantly, Arellano has also raced to solo third with an 11-5 win-loss card.
With these, the two youngsters were named Collegiate Press Corps NCAA Players of the Week for the period May 6 to May 18 for their outstanding performances in the women's and men's divisions.
Sarie edged out other nominees Zam Nolasco of Benilde, Shai Omipon of Perpetual, and Sam Tiratira of Arellano for the weekly recognition.
Guinto, on the other hand, bested teammate Anfernee Curamen, Chris Lorenz Villanueva of Benilde, and Jeff Marapoc of Perpetual for the weekly recognition being deliberated and voted upon by print and online media covering the collegiate beat.
But while the future looks promising, Sarie and Guinto's focus is on the present
"Second round na po kasi [and] natalo kami [sa Arellano] nu'ng first round tapos 'yun po talaga ang mindset namin na kailangan naming bumawi sa kanila," Sarie said as Letran still holds the top spot at 13-2.
"I did not expect po 'yung score ko kasi palo lang po ako 'pag binigay sa akin 'yung bola. Hindi ko po iniisip 'yung score, nando'n lang ako sa mindset na kailangan naming manalo."
Guinto, meanwhile, said they are hell-bent on making sure they take care of their remaining games in the elimination round and make it to the Final Four again.
"Ang masasabi ko lang po ay pinaghahandaan po talaga namin 'tong last [few] games dahil hindi pa po kasi sure sa Final Four. Gusto po naming matalo 'yung [matitira] para hindi po kami malaglag sa Final Four," Guinto said last Friday.

Mycah Go prioritizes Benilde first with NCAA Finals, PVL Draft happening on same day
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde veteran Mycah Go has a lot on her plate right now. Last Sunday, Go and the Lady Blazers dispatched Mapua University and booked another trip to the NCAA women's volleyball finals. Days before that, Go attended the PVL Draft Combine, although she did not participate in the said event on its second day. On June 8, however, the NCAA Season 97 MVP will have to juggle her events as she will play with Benilde in the NCAA finals at 2:30 p.m. in San Juan, then go straight to the PVL Draft in Quezon City. "Hindi pa ako tapos sa Benilde so priority ko pa rin ang Benilde and katawan ko," Go said last Sunday after a hectic week of activities for her. "Unahin ko muna ang NC, mas gusto ko pa rin na maganda ang tapos ko [rito]," she added. [I'm not yet done with Benilde so my priorities are still Benilde and my body... I'll put NC first, I still want to finish strong here.] Go has been a part of Benilde's four straight finals appearances. In Season 98, despite her injury, Go was still on the Benilde bench as part of the coaching staff. Now, she has a chance to get her third title as a student-athlete. "Tuloy pa rin, tuloy pa rin sa pagtrabaho, [ayusin] kung anong kailangan i-improve," she said. Arellano drags Mapua to Final Four rubber match with romp led by Guinto, Pangilinan
By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Arellano University recovered from a first-set hiccup to reassert mastery over Mapua University with a 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 win in Game 1 of NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball Final Four on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre. The Chiefs, who dealt Mapua its first loss of the season back in their second-round clash, again leaned on AC Guinto, who poured in an all-around performance of 19 points on 14 attacks laced with four blocks and one ace as they dragged the second-seeded Cardinals to a winner-take-all Game 2 on Friday. The third-year Guinto got solid help from other starters with veterans Carl Berdal and Jiwen Sinuto chipping in 13 and 11 markers apiece. Berdal also added four digs and 13 receptions to help the cause. But the revelation was sophomore middle blocker Jake Pangilinan, churning out an impressive 11-point outing that was highlighted by three monster blocks late in the fourth set that paved the way for the stunner. "Sa first set po 'yung galaw namin parang stiff, kinukuha pa po namin 'yung tempo namin," Pangilinan told GMA News Online. "Nagusap-usap po kami kung paano namin maso-solve 'yung problem namin nu'ng first set para sa next sets makuha na po namin 'yung laro namin." [In the first step, our movement was kind of stiff, we were just getting our tempo down... we all spoke about how to solve the problem in the first set so that in the next sets we find our game.] After losing the opening frame, Arellano crawled its way back with Guinto unleashing two blocks late in the second set before Berdal put the punctuation as they leveled the affair to one set apiece. The Chiefs then opened the third canto with a hot 4-0 start before Guinto served an ace to make it a 20-11 lead. Sinuto soared from the opposite side for the set point at 24-17 while an error-plagued Mapua committed an attack error to secure the set. Mapua struggled to recover from its offensive dry spell as Arellano built a 15-9 cushion on a one-two dunk from setter Adi Villados before Pangililnan impose his will at the net, unloading three straight blocks to finish it off. The 20-year-old middle blocker denied Ar-jay Ramos and Ramil Gripo on two successive plays before putting the roof anew on Ramos to help Arellano establish a massive 23-13 advantage. Guinto went for the cross-court kill for the match point before Barbie San Andres' attack error triggered the four-set victory for Arellano. San Andres paced Arellano with 23 points laced with 20 receptions while Olsen Jamisola and Ramos chimed in with 13 and 12 markers apiece. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Letran eyes return to NCAA women's finals; Mapua makes rare Final Four appearance in men's volleyball
Colegio de San Juan de Letran is eyeing another stint in the NCAA women's volleyball finals when it takes on no. 3 seed Arellano University, while Mapua University is making a rare Final Four appearance in men's play as it faces Arellano's men's team. The twice-to-beat Lady Knights will battle the Lady Chiefs for the second finals ticket on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. but prior to that, no. 2 seed Cardinals will battle the Chiefs at 11 a.m. at the Filoil Centre in San Juan. Letran finished the elimination round at no. 2 with a 15-3 record and won back-to-back to finish the second round. For head coach Oliver Almadro, however, they will just focus on the game and prepare without thinking of their advantage. "We have to be ready going into the semifinals. We thank the Lord for giving us the opportunity to be in the Final Four for two years in a row and we always pray to God na bigyan ulit kami ng chance makapasok sa championship and His will will be done sa championship," Letran head coach "We have to think of that game lang first. We have to think that there's no advantage or disadvantage. We have to prepare and dumating sa game na ready kami." The Lady Knights have plenty in their arsenal as they eye their second consecutive finals appearance. Rookie Vanessa Sarie, the league's top scorer, has been making waves in the NCAA as she broke the NCAA scoring record when she exploded for 37 points in their game against Arellano. Following Sarie in the scoring list for this season is Judiel Nitura, who is also the league's best server. Gia Maquilang, meanwhile, has found her groove and was the league's top spiker at the end of the elimination round, while veteran libero Lara Mae Silva has topped the digging and receiving categories. Arellano, meanwhile, has been pushing teams to the limits. The Lady Chiefs won against fellow Final Four team Mapua University in the second round and Letran in the first round. Arellano is also in a three-game winning streak where it defeated Perpetual, EAC, and LPU. At the end of the elimination round, Arellano finished with a 12-6 card to claim the third spot. "Siyempre, masaya kami dahil 'yong target namin [ngayong] season is nakuha namin. So sabi ko nga last time, 'yong makapasok muna kami sa Final Four, nakuha naman tapos saka kami na i-ta-target sa susunod," Arellano head coach Obet Javier said. Arellano will have to rely on this season's third leading scorer in Laika Tudlasan, Marianne Padillon, and Sam Tiratira, as they Lady Chiefs hope to repeat what they did in the first round, and eventually force a do-or-die against the Lady Knights. In the men's division, meanwhile, Mapua and Arellano will battle for a slot in the finals. The Cardinals, led by Barbie San Andres and Arjay Ramos, capped the elimination round at second place with a 14-4 card, but have suffered back-to-back losses before the Final Four. This season's top 1 and 3 scorers, San Andres and Ramos, are marked men coming into the Final Four but will be backed by the likes of Olsen Jamisola and setter Juancho Barba. Mapua has also been shaky lately as they absorbed all their losses in the second round after completing a first round sweep. The Cardinals also suffered their first loss this season against Arellano. They are, however, motivated as they made their first Final Four appearance at least since Season 91 in 2015. Arellano, meanwhile, ended the prelims on a four-game streak to finish third with a 13-5 win-loss card. Carl Berdal and AC Guinto lead the crop of scorers which also includes Penny Curamen, and Jiwen Sinuto.
