'We are convinced that Riley will play an important role for us,' said club sports director Tim Regan. 'He has a successful career in North America and was also productive in the KHL. Riley has the goal-scoring gene and can also play a decisive role on the power play. The fact that he is a right-handed shot makes him even more valuable.'
The son of former NHLer Don Barber, Riley was born in Pittsburgh and played youth hockey in Michigan, eventually playing in the U.S. National Team Development Program, the 2012 IIHF U-18 World Championship and two World Juniors, winning a gold medal at each level. He was drafted in the sixth round, 167th overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
After playing three NCAA seasons at Miami University in Ohio, Barber signed with Washington in 2015 and, over the next eight seasons, played in the organizations of the Capitals, Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars. Although he spent the majority of the time in the AHL, he played three NHL games with Washington, nine games with Montreal and four with Detroit, recording no points and four penalty minutes in 16 games.
Barber spent the last two seasons in the KHL playing for Barys Astana, Ak Bars Kazan and Neftekhimik Nizkhnekamsk, recording 64 points in 102 games.

Barber joins an Ingolstadt team that finished first in the DEL regular season but lost in the semifinals to Kölner Haie. The team also has former NHLers Kenny Agostino and Morgan Ellis under contract for 2025-26.

He received over 25 scholarship offers from Division I programs, choosing the school over Kentucky and Ohio State. Wilson is considered a potential first-round pick in the 2026 NBA draft because of his overall offensive versatility and ability to defend multiple positions. The draft class is also expected to include AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Cameron Boozer (Duke) and Mikel Brown Jr. (Louisville).

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said that if expansion takes place in the near future, the league will likely look to realign teams based on geography. "I think [expansion and realignment] are related, in my mind," Manfred said Sunday on ESPN's broadcast of the Little League Classic. "I think if we expand, it provides us with an opportunity to geographically realign. I think we could save a lot of wear and tear on our players in terms of travel. And I think our postseason format would be even more appealing for entities like ESPN, because you'd be playing out of the East and out of the West." Manfred didn't explicitly detail what realignment would look like, but he continued to emphasize the idea of teams that are closer together playing more games against one another. "That 10 o'clock timeslot where we sometimes get Boston-Anaheim would be two West Coast teams," Manfred said. "That 10 o'clock slot that's a problem for us sometimes becomes a real opportunity for our West Coast audience. "I think the owners realize that there's demand for Major League Baseball. We're in a lot of great cities. We have the opportunity to do something good around that expansion process." ADVERTISEMENT MLB has used a geographically-based realignment idea in recent memory. While MLB didn't realign divisions, it had a geographically-based schedule for the 60-game 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The American and National Leagues remained in place, but teams only faced division rivals and interleague games against teams from the corresponding division (AL and NL East, AL and NL Central, AL and NL West) during the regular season. Considering Manfred's comments, the 2020 season could be a guideline for what's to come if expansion and realignment were to take place. It might also mean that MLB similarly divides its two leagues as the NBA and NHL divide their two conferences. As for expansion, Manfred has stated in the past that he'd like to see two teams added to MLB before he retires as commissioner in 2029. A handful of cities have been speculated as expansion candidates in recent years, but MLB believes the strongest two candidates for expansion are Nashville and Salt Lake City, USA Today reported in July. Expansion would bring the total number of teams in MLB to 32, likely necessitating some sort of divisional realignment. If it does happen, the league could either do what the NFL does and have eight divisions of four teams or follow the NHL's path and have four divisions of eight teams. The National League was founded in 1876 and the American League was formed in 1901. The historical aspects of the sport is what adds to the beauty of the game. Former MLB general manager Jim Bowden floated an idea back in May 2023. He predicted in an article in The Athletic that MLB could move to an Eastern and Western Conference format "consisting of four geographically-aligned divisions apiece. Four teams per division, 16 teams per conference." The Eastern Conference would consist of the East Division (Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies), North Division (Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays), Mid-Atlantic Division (Baltimore Orioles, expansion team, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals) and Southeast Division (Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, expansion and Tampa Bay Rays).
