Canals project: PM summons CCI meeting on May 2
According to a notification, the 52nd meeting of the CCI will be held at the Prime Minister's Office. The session will be attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and Amir Muqam. The chief ministers of all four provinces have been invited to participate in the meeting. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Science and Health Minister Mustafa Kamal will also attend the meeting.
Special invitations have been extended to the ministers for petroleum, water resources, and Power Division. Additionally, chief secretaries from all provinces have been invited to the session.

Prime Minister Sharif had previously addressed the issue in a joint press conference with Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, stating that no new canal projects would proceed without consensus on the matter within the CCI framework.
On Thursday, PM Sharif reiterated his stance, emphasising that no water-related initiatives would move forward without agreement from all provincial governments.
He noted that the federal government was committed to collaborating with provinces to create a consensus-driven, long-term agricultural and water policy.
He also referred to the 1991 Water Accord and the 2018 Water Policy as critical frameworks for managing the country's water rights, both of which had the approval of all provinces.

PM reaches out to politicians on floods

Photo: NNI Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reached out to the leaders of different political parties and assured them of the cooperation and support of the federal government and its institutions to handle the situation caused by the heavy monsoon rains and consequent floods. The PM telephoned Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and expressed grief over the loss of lives caused by the torrential rains and urban flooding in southern Sindh, particularly Karachi. He offered full support from the federal government to assist the Sindh government in addressing the emergency situation. Prime Minister Shehbaz directed the National Disaster Management Authority Chairman to stay in close coordination with the Sindh government, provide all possible assistance to the Provincial Disaster Management Aauthority, and ensure the early warnings to the people about potential risks. The prime minister also spoke with Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman and Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. Business facilitation center Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday inaugurated the first-ever Business Facilitation Center (BFC) with a vision to promote ease of doing business and attract investment in Pakistan by providing a one-stop solution to investors and entrepreneurs. Established by the Board of Investment, the BFC will facilitate the business community by providing a wide range of services, including guidance on regulatory requirements and facilitating business registration, licensing, and permits. It will serve as a one-stop service, reducing hurdles and facilitating efficient interaction between businesses and government entities. The prime minister, who was briefed on the center's functioning, including the investors' guidance, application for special economic zones, licensing and payments procedures with drastically reduced timelines, also unveiled the plaque of the project, vowing to replicate it across the country if it fulfills the desired objectives. Prime Minister Shehbaz called for making the facilitation center attractive and popular in other countries and establishing it as a model, paving the way for its replication in other parts of the country. Jhal Magsi Gas project Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met with Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Nawabzada Khalid Hussain Magsi, at the Prime Minister's House, where he was briefed on the progress and significance of the Jhal Magsi Gas Field Project. During the meeting, the Federal Minister informed the Prime Minister that the inclusion of gas from the Jhal Magsi field into the national distribution network is expected to significantly reduce Pakistan's dependence on imported gas. According to the minister, this shift could result in annual savings of approximately $298 million in foreign exchange, a Prime Minister's Office news release said.

PM seeks Chinese investment in maritime
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to further strengthening its economic partnership with China, inviting Chinese companies to explore and invest in a wide range of sectors of the country's economy, with particular emphasis on maritime industries. The prime minister made these remarks during a detailed meeting with a delegation from Shandong Xinxu Group Corporation, which was led by its Chairman Hou Jianxin, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office. He said that Pakistan and China have consistently stood by each other in every testing time, and expressed his government's determination to elevate bilateral economic cooperation to new heights. PM Sharif assured the Chinese delegation that his government would extend all possible facilities to Chinese investors, particularly those interested in establishing projects within Pakistan's Special Economic Zones (SEZs). He reiterated that the government remained committed to making the investment climate more attractive, predictable, and business-friendly for international investors. During the meeting, the delegation was briefed on the significant potential within Pakistan's ship-breaking and ship-recycling sectors, which remain largely untapped despite offering considerable opportunities. In response, the Shandong Group expressed keen interest in building a modern and environmentally sustainable green ship-breaking yard in Pakistan, along with the development of a large-scale maritime industrial complex.
