KUCHING (July 18): All 28 MyKiosk stalls at the Tabuan Jaya Old Market parking lot have now been fully taken up, said Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
He pointed out the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) received a total of 53 applications for the kiosks.
'Among the 28 kiosks, there are nine fruit and vegetable stalls, 14 stalls that sell packed food and drinks, and five drink and fruit juice stalls,' Wee said during a site visit today.
The project funded by the federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government allows formerly illegal hawkers and B40 traders from the surrounding area to run businesses in a legal, safe, and clean space.
'So, we must say this is a good initiative that allows the low-income traders to earn a sustainable income by operating in a regulated environment.
'We encourage residents in the surrounding area to support these traders by patronising the MyKiosk stalls here,' Wee said.
In response to feedback about blocked parking spaces, he said the kiosks have been repositioned.
'We have extra car parks for the people nearby and for the people who come in to shop with the MyKiosk here,' he said.

He shared that each stall was constructed under a transparent tender process for RM13,500, well below comparable schemes, and built to strict specifications.
Traders enjoy six months' free rent, after which they pay a quarterly rental of approximately RM140, he explained.
Regarding the two kiosks at Friendship Park, Wee said applications are still being evaluated.
'We must be fair to select them and to select that, you know, the one that should be there rather than having to be there.
'We don't want it to spoil the actual image of Taman Sahabat,' he said.
He added MBKS will monitor all hawker centres within its jurisdiction to ensure that subsidised rents translate into genuinely affordable prices for consumers, not just benefits for traders.
'We want you to still be able to find RM3, RM3.50 kolo mee, coffee that you don't have to pay RM4.80 but just RM1 in areas like Kenyalang, Bintawa, and Sungai Apong.
'Subsidies must benefit the rakyat, not operate without purpose,' he said.
He emphasised that every step, from calling tenders to selecting traders, followed established procedures designed to serve public interests.
Also present were Kuching South deputy mayor Datuk Dr Zaiedi Suhaili and MyKiosk project organising chairperson councillor Judy Kho. lead MyKiosk Tabuan Jaya Wee Hong Seng

Govt to launch Sejahtera Madani tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will launch the Sejahtera Madani initiative tomorrow as part of its ongoing efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty in the country, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the launch is a continuation of the government's commitment to ensuring that the hardcore poor and the poor continue to be assisted through joint efforts by the government and the corporate sector. "The effort to eradicate hardcore poverty has been my priority since the beginning. Almost 150 thousand hardcore poor households in 2023 have been lifted out of the hardcore poor group by the end of 2024. "Tomorrow, I will launch Sejahtera Madani, which is an effort to continue to ensure that the hardcore poor and the poor are properly assisted through joint efforts by the government and the corporate sector," said Anwar. He said this at the Special Appreciation Announcement for Malaysians, which was broadcast live on all major television channels and social media platforms today. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the government has continued to improve various forms of assistance to ease the burden of the people's living expenses since the beginning of his administration. He said among the significant steps that have been taken is the highest allocation channelled to the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) at RM13 billion, which is the highest amount in history. "(In addition), the allocation of cash assistance under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) has also been increased to RM2.9 billion, among other things, to increase the monthly welfare assistance rate for the elderly and children from poor families," he said. Anwar said the Madani government is also clearly defending the fate of padi farmers, including raising the Padi Purchase Floor Price to RM1,500 in 2025, after increases in 2022 and 2023, besides the Padi Price Subsidy Scheme Rate also being increased to RM500 in 2023. In the commodity sector, he said the government also increased the Rubber Production Incentive (IPG) to RM3 per kilogramme in 2024, after increases given in 2022 and 2023. Anwar today also announced a one-off RM100 grant to every adult citizen aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, a postponement of toll rate increases for 10 highways, and a lower RON95 subsidy price of RM1.99 per litre. He said several more new measures and initiatives would be introduced in the 2026 Budget scheduled to be presented in October. "This (the initiative announced today) is at least a temporary measure. By the end of 2025, Insyaalah, we will improve with a clear commitment to provide benefits in 2026 in the Budget 2026 in October," he said. He said the Madani Government is committed to continuing to steer the country's administration more responsibly by introducing policies and actions that can guarantee comfort for the people. -- BERNAMA

Dewan Rakyat: Aid Increase For The People In 2025, Shows Govt's Commitment To Lower Cost Of Livng

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- The increase in the allocation for various forms of financial assistance for 2025 proves the commitment of the MADANI Government in its efforts to reduce the cost of living pressures faced by the people, while also driving sustainable and resilient economic growth. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said among the key initiatives was the increase in the allocation for the Sumbangan TunaI Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) to RM13 billion this year, compared to RM10 billion, which benefits almost nine million recipients or 60 per cent of the adult population. 'The maximum rate for households in 2025 has also been increased to RM4,600, an increase of almost 25 per cent compared to RM3,700 in 2024. 'The government has also raised the allocation for assistance under the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) to RM2.9 billion for 2025 compared to RM2.4 billion previously,' she said in reply to a question by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin during question and answer session at Dewan Rakyat today. Hamzah raised a question regarding the government's strategy to reduce the burden of the people's cost of living, following the country's total debt which has now reached RM1.5 trillion. Lim said other assistance included the Elderly Assistance being increased to RM600 per month compared to RM500, an increase in the Child Assistance for Poor Families to RM250 (six years and below) and RM200 (seven to 18 years), subject to a maximum rate of RM1,000 per family. Also increased is the General Assistance in the Federal Territories to RM150 per month compared to RM100, with a maximum rate of RM500 per family. 'The government has also allocated RM1 billion for various initiatives to address the cost of living comprehensively, including price control of basic goods such as rice and cooking oil. 'Of that amount, RM300 million is allocated specifically for the RAHMAH Umbrella Programme, including the expansion of RAHMAH Sales to all state constituencies to offer basic goods at affordable prices,' he said.

‘Detractors of MyKiosk initiative should apologise'

PETALING JAYA: Irresponsible parties who spread baseless allegations against the MyKiosk initiative should apologise, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. He said the accusations had unfairly smeared the efforts of ministry staff as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said there was no abuse of power or criminal wrongdoing in the programme's implementation. Nga cited MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki's statement on July 3 which cleared the ministry of misconduct. 'Those who throw stones should not hide their hands. I demand an apology to all the ministry's staff who have worked tirelessly. 'Anyone who has spread slander or false claims about MyKiosk, please come forward and apologise.' Responding to criticism labelling MyKiosk as a 'white elephant', Nga said the initiative had shown real progress, even if full occupancy had yet to be achieved. As of July 2025, MyKiosk 1.0 (2023) recorded a 91.75% occupancy rate with 2,926 units filled while MyKiosk 2.0 (2024) reached 86.78% occupancy with 3,518 units taken up nationwide. The figures demonstrate the programme's success in providing safe, affordable spaces for small businesses, particularly in urban areas, Nga said in reply to a question from Batu Pahat MP Onn Abu Bakar. The initiative is funded via the ministry's BP1 allocation for small-scale infrastructure projects implemented by local authorities. RM50 million was spent in 2023 for 3,189 kiosks and RM100 million in 2024 for an additional 4,054 units. Nga admitted there had been some administrative hiccups but said the ministry is working to resolve them, including through site visits in both government and opposition-led states. 'We are not TikTok warriors spreading baseless claims. We are honourable members of this House,' he told Hulu Selangor MP Mohd Hasnizan Harun, who raised concerns about vacant kiosks. Nga said to strengthen oversight a 'traffic light' system had been introduced to rate the 156 local councils managing MyKiosk sites, with councils in the green zone rewarded with more funds while councils in the red zone face budget cuts, though support would be given to help them improve. He added that many kiosk tenants now earn sustainable incomes, proving MyKiosk is more than just infrastructure as it is also a tool for economic empowerment. Nga also tabled the Street, Drainage and Building (Amendment) Bill 2025 to boost enforcement and encourage civic responsibility. The Bill proposes amending Sections 47 and 48 and introduces Section 125A, allowing local councils to impose community service for minor littering offences. Key highlights include fines of up to RM2,000 for first-time offenders, RM3,000 for repeat offenders and up to 12 hours of community service, subject to the court's discretion. 'This is not just about punishing people. It is also about building a culture of care and responsibility.' Offenders under 18 will be handled under the Child Act 2001. The Bill applies to Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan, with enforcement timing to be set by state governments. Nga said the proposal complements recent updates to the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act, reinforcing the need for stronger action to tackle Malaysia's littering problem.
