Ireland Pledges €4 Million to Support Education and Public Services in Palestine
In a significant move to bolster support for Palestinian communities amidst ongoing challenges, the Irish government has announced a new aid package worth €4 million aimed at supporting children's education and public services in Palestine.
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that €3 million of the total funding will be directed toward educational initiatives, specifically to support the schooling of children in Palestine. In addition, €700,000 will be allocated to human rights organizations, and €300,000 will be used to assist public services and families in need.
In a statement released on Friday, Simon Harris, Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, emphasized the critical role of education in Ireland's longstanding partnership with Palestine. He highlighted that the funding would also support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which is providing remote education to around 300,000 children in Gaza, where schools have faced severe disruptions due to the ongoing conflict.
"The provision of education remains a cornerstone of our commitment to Palestine, and we continue to support UNRWA's vital work in ensuring that Palestinian children receive an education despite the challenging circumstances they face," Harris said.
The announcement of this aid comes at a time of heightened international focus on the situation in Palestine, as diplomatic efforts intensify to address the ongoing conflict. Harris also remarked that the coming days represent a "critical opportunity" to achieve a ceasefire and end the ongoing violence. He called on all parties to make every effort to reach a peace agreement that would halt the suffering and bring an end to the war.
This move by Ireland underscores the country's commitment to providing humanitarian assistance and supporting key sectors such as education and human rights in regions affected by conflict. Ireland has been a consistent advocate for Palestinian rights on the international stage and continues to contribute to peacebuilding efforts in the region.

Egyptian Journalists Syndicate condemns TV interview with Yair Lapid - Foreign Affairs
Khaled El-Balshy, president of Egypt's Journalists Syndicate, has denounced a recent televised interview between Egyptian TV presenter Emad El-Din Adeeb and former Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid, calling it a 'professional and humanitarian crime'. In a statement released on Friday, El-Balshy accused Adeeb of giving a platform to justify the 'war crimes perpetrated by the Israeli occupation army'. The interview with Lapid, who currently leads the opposition in Israel, aired on Thursday via Sky News Arabia from the United Arab Emirates. El-Balshy reaffirmed the syndicate's longstanding opposition to all forms of normalization with Israel, referring to a 1981 decision by its general assembly that opposes engagement with Israeli officials on professional, union-related, or personal levels. He noted that Adeeb was expelled from the syndicate in September 2020 following a disciplinary committee ruling over his dismissal of dozens of journalists from the now-defunct Al-Alam Al-Youm newspaper. Had Adeeb still been a member, El-Balshy said, disciplinary action would have been taken in response to the interview. He also urged journalists to adhere to the syndicate's anti-normalization stance, warning that any current member who violates it would face immediate internal investigation. The interview prompted widespread criticism on social media, with commentators accusing Adeeb of failing to challenge Lapid's falsehoods and of promoting normalization with Israel. Some critics said the broadcast could serve as a cautionary example in journalism schools. Veteran investigative journalist Yousri Fouda also criticized the interview. While acknowledging that journalists have a duty to seek truth from all sources — including adversaries — he questioned the editorial judgment behind the broadcast. Gaza civil defence says 20 killed in Israeli operations - War on Gaza
Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli military operations killed 20 people across the war-battered territory on Saturday, after nearly 21 months of war. Israel has recently expanded its military operations in the Gaza Strip, where the war has created dire humanitarian conditions for the Palestinian territory's population of more than two million. Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence agency. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said five of the dead were killed in a strike on a school in Gaza City. A second strike near another school in the city, where displaced civilians had found shelter, killed three people and wounded around 10, including children, he said. Many Gazans have sought shelter in schools and other public buildings since the war began with Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel. Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it could not comment on specific attacks without precise coordinates. The latest strikes came hours after Hamas said it was ready to start talks "immediately" on a US-sponsored proposal for a Gaza ceasefire. The proposal came ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's departure for talks on Monday in Washington, where US President Donald Trump has intensified calls for an end to the war. Israel said Saturday it was still mulling its response to a positive reaction from Hamas to the latest US-sponsored proposal for a Gaza ceasefire. "No decision has been made yet on that issue," a government official told AFP on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak publicly about it. Israel's security cabinet was due to meet later on Saturday, after the end of the Jewish sabbath at sundown, Israeli media reported. Israel's genocidal war began in October 2023, has killed more than 57,000 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry. The United Nations considers its figures reliable.
