England star Lucy Bronze makes France prediction in opening Euros match

Daily Mirror8 hours ago
England have a tough opener as they begin their Euros title defence in Switzerland on Saturday but experienced Lionesses defender Lucy Bronze is welcoming the challenge
Lucy Bronze is excited at the prospect of facing France in England's Euros opener in one of the most eye-catching fixtures of the tournament's opening week. The Lionesses begin their title defence against one of their fellow favourites, meaning they'll need to be on top form from the get-go, but that doesn't worry the experienced defender.
'I think if I wasn't in this squad right now and I was watching at home as a fan I would be saying that has got to be the most exciting group game of the entire tournament,' Bronze told England's diary room. 'England-France, probably two of the highest ranked teams playing each other in the group games. There is a really big buzz about that game.'

Bronze spent three years in the French top flight with Lyon and two in Spain with Barcelona, but is now back in the WSL, and the Chelsea star will be taking on some familiar faces in Zurich on Saturday. 'They [France] are still a very strong squad, lots of fresh-faced attacking players, exciting players who I have played with and against for many years either at Lyon and obviously at Chelsea as well at the minute,' she added.

'France are a team I really love playing against for that reason. Anyone who knows France, knows they have amazing attacking threats.
'Obviously as a defender that is something you quite relish coming up against. We are playing in a group where people will be saying they are one of the teams they could be a favourite to win the whole tournament as well.
'Two big favourites going head-to-head early on is exciting for everyone. For us it is an exciting test to start the tournament in that way. We played them previously in group stages as well in a World Cup and that game was super exciting as well. So, I am just looking forward to it, training and focusing on France.'
After taking on France, England will stay in Zurich for their second group game against the Netherlands on Wednesday. They will then move on to St Gallen for the final group fixture on July 13.
Temperatures in Zurich have dropped a little overnight, but England boss Sarina Wiegman was nonetheless confident her players would be able to deal with the heat. 'We have ice cold towels at the rest moment in the training sessions ,they get the towels if they want to,' the coach said, also mentioning the use of ice baths and cold vests when needed.
'So we make sure we are hydrated. Take another rest, don't go in and out all the time, for recovery, and do those things to keep your body temperature low.'

Man Utd title winner, 47, to join Mikel Arteta's Arsenal coaching staff in a surprise move to replace Carlos Cuesta

MIKEL ARTETA is appointing Manchester United title winner Gabriel Heinze to his Arsenal staff. The former Argentina star, 47, will join the group after 29-year-old Carlos Cuesta left his role as assistant coach to become manager of Parma. 2 Heinze spent three years with the Red Devils after joining from PSG - where he played with a teenage Arteta. The defender has been described by the Gunners boss as one of the "unbelievable players" he played with, and an "inspiration". Arteta previously said: 'The other inspirations were (Mauricio) Pochettino and Heinze, those two were next to me all the time, behind me, and they were guiding me in everything I had to do in my professional life, how I had to understand the game and they were inspirational to me.' Heinze will join the backroom staff alongside assistant Albert Stuivenberg, goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, set-piece coach Nicolas Jover and first-team coach Miguel Molina. Heinze moved to Old Trafford for £6.9million in 2004 and became a cult hero among fans - scoring on his debut against Bolton. But a lengthy injury lay-off saw Sir Alex Ferguson sign Patrice Evra, who became first-choice left-back in the title-winning 2006-07 season. He left Man Utd after 83 games under a cloud after trying to force a move to bitter rivals Liverpool before eventually being shipped to Real Madrid. As well as winning the Premier League he won domestic titles in France, Spain and Argentina as well as Olympic gold. Heinze has had managerial spells at five clubs since 2015, leaving his most recent stint at Newell's Old Boys in his homeland in 2023.

Odds of leaving Mercedes 'exceptionally low' says Russell, but Verstappen talks continue

Formula One How rough is F1? George is having his strongest ever season but could still be given the boot Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Advertisement - Page continues below Clearly things wouldn't have got this far if Max wasn't open to exiting Red Bull, but it isn't clear if the performance clauses in his contract – that would allow him to break free of a deal that's meant to run until the end of 2028 – will be activated. Russell isn't worried though. 'I feel I'm performing better than ever,' he said in the build up to this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone. 'And it's as simple as that really. Performance speaks for everything. You might like 'The fact is, Toto [Wolff, team boss] has never let me down. He's always given me his word, but he's also got to do what's right for his team. Which includes me, but it also includes the thousands of people who work for Mercedes. For me, it's nothing to worry about because I don't think I'll be going anywhere.' Defiant, right? Of course, Mercedes could decide to sacrifice 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli and run Russell and Verstappen as teammates. But the duo have some major beef, which got personal last year and wasn't exactly soothed when Max drove into the side of George in Spain last month. Advertisement - Page continues below And having been scarred for life by having Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in the same garage, you'd have to assume Toto Wolff would, er, rather not do that again. Still, Russell's happy to share with anyone, apparently. 'Every team has two seats available, and it's normal that every team is considering what the future holds,' he explains. 'And I don't take that personally because I made it clear from the beginning: I'm happy to be teammates with anybody.' He's so confident that he's not talking to other teams, he says, and has no deadline for when he wants his contract to be sorted. And if it does come to finding a new employer, he's relaxed about that too. Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. Look out for your regular round-up of news, reviews and offers in your inbox. But there hasn't been a lack of interest, let's say. 'I am loyal to Mercedes. At the end of the day, everything will work itself out. And the likelihood I'm not at Mercedes next year, I think is exceptionally low.' Still though… what are the odds of him lining up for Red Bull next season?
