No saffron terror: CM
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis claimed that there was a botched effort by the Congress to implicate several RSS and right-wing leaders on trumped-up charges of 'saffron terror' as a part of vote-bank politics.
'There was no saffron terror or Hindu terror or Sanatan terror. They are all the same, and they don't exist,' he told reporters on Friday.
When asked about a former policeman's claim about the instructions to arrest Mr. Bhagwat, he said: 'Congress' Hindu terror narrative has been busted due to Malegaon verdict. In the decade of 1990s and in the beginning of 2000s, several terror cases were seen across the world. The strings were linked to Pakistan. Islamic terrorism was a terminology, which was coined then across the world.'
'In India, Congress realised that it was affecting their vote bank. To brand Hindus as terrorists, Congress and UPA cooked up this conspiracy. They built pressure on the agencies, including the police, to include all the RSS and Hindutvavadi leaders on saffron terror charges, though there was no evidence. But the police did not act under pressure. All the events will come out slowly now. There was a plot to term Hindus as terrorists,' he added.
NCP(SP) MP Supriya Sule said she will have to look into the context of the statement by the police official. 'I don't know in which context the former policeman has said this. There are no details. It has been so many years. I don't know how to make sense of it,' she said.
Mehboob Mujawar, a former policeman who had worked in the Maharashtra ATS, told the media earlier that he was pressured to arrest Mr. Bhagwat.
'Accused met Bhagwat'
He said that he was given orders by former IPS officer Parambir Singh and 'higher officials' to pick up the RSS leader. 'They told me that the accused had met Bhagwat before committing the crime. I was given 10 persons to work with me. I was given funds from the Service Secret Fund. As a part of the probe, I went to Indore, Gokak, Nagpur, and a few other places. There was pressure on me. But I didn't act on it. They talked about 'saffron terror'. How can I do something that was completely wrong?' he asked.
He told The Hindu that he received the orders within 15 to 20 days of the Malegaon blasts that year. When asked about dealing with the responsibility during the probe, he said: 'I played a minor part. My responsibility was to look for the absconding accused, and to probe about them.'

"Certified Anti-National": BJP After Top Court Raps Rahul Gandhi Over Army Remarks
New Delhi: As the Supreme Court slammed Rahul Gandhi over his remarks about the Indian Army, the BJP on Monday tore into the Congress leader and alleged that he has vowed to "weaken India and strengthen China". Calling the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha a "certified anti-national", the BJP claimed that the "China guru" (Gandhi) and his party also "hate" the Indian armed forces and that he is being "remote controlled by foreign forces". The ruling party also demanded an apology from him and the Congress for his remarks. The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the proceedings against Gandhi before a Lucknow court over his remarks about the Army during his December 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra. The top court, however, censured Gandhi, saying if he is a true Indian, he would not say such a thing. Citing observations made by a bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih, Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that for the first time in the parliamentary history of the country, the Supreme Court had to make such a "stern remark" against a leader of the opposition. In a post in Hindi on X, Pradhan said, "Rahul Gandhi and the Congress have a history of insulting the army, whether it is the surgical strike or Operation Sindoor. They have questioned the sacrifices of our brave soldiers at every opportunity." Their loyalty is not to the nation but only to one family, which is why respect for the nation is not even part of their "fundamental thinking", he charged. "Today, the entire country is hurt by this anti-national mentality and expects an apology from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress," the senior BJP leader said. Latching on to the apex court's observations, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged that Gandhi keeps making "immatured, irresponsible and anti-India comments" even though he has been rapped by various courts for such remarks in the past. "Today when the Supreme Court's comment has come, it won't be wrong to say that Rahul Gandhi has certainly vowed to weaken India and strengthen China," Bhatia told a press conference at the BJP headquarters here. In a post on X, BJP IT department head Amit Malviya said, "The Supreme Court has once again reprimanded 'China Guru' Rahul Gandhi for making irresponsible statements concerning India's national security and territorial integrity." "Imagine, a leader of the opposition being repeatedly rebuked for speaking such recklessly," he said. "Rahul Gandhi is now a certified anti-national," the BJP leader charged in another post on X. Showing a purported picture of Rahul Gandhi signing some document in the presence of Sonia Gandhi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, BJP spokesperson Bhatia claimed that the Congress leader had signed a party-to-party memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Communist Party of China. "That's why Rahul Gandhi was saying that our soldiers were thrashed by Chinese soldiers, be it (in) Doklam or Galwan, while every Indian was standing by India and brave soldiers of India," he charged. They never tell the people of India what was there in the Congress' party-to-party MoU with the Communist Party of China, he said. "It seems Rahul Gandhi has love for China and Pakistan in his veins, but no love for India," he added. Bhatia termed the apex court's observations as "very serious" and said with this, Gandhi's credibility has gone down to "zero". "Does India deserve a more responsible and a better Leader of Opposition (LoP)? As the LoP who has taken oath under the Constitution to protect the sovereignty of our country, is he destroying the sovereignty of our country? Is he helping nations that are inimical to our country? Is he demoralising the brave Indian armed forces?" he asked. Rahul Gandhi's credibility is "at stake", Bhatia said. Malviya also took on the Congress leader over his recent "dead" economy remark, calling it "a diplomatic disaster on multiple fronts". "His recent 'dead economy' jibe is just the latest in a long series. In doing so, he implicitly admitted that Russia, a long-standing ally, is struggling, while bizarrely endorsing a hostile state like Pakistan as having a robust economy," he said. Echoing US President Donald Trump's criticism of the Indian economy, Gandhi said on August 1 that everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman know that the country's economy is "dead". Referring to Gandhi's remarks on the surgical strike and Operation Sindoor, another BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that the Congress leader and his party "hate" Indian armed forces. "Sena ka Apman Congress ki pehchan (Insulting the Army is the hallmark of the Congress)," Poonawalla said in a post on X. "Rahul and Congress hate Indian Armed Forces," he charged, adding, "Today SC has slammed him." Another BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said on X that the Supreme Court's poser to Gandhi about his claim exposed him. He said, "Supreme Court asks Rahul Gandhi - 'How did you know that China had occupied land?'" This question by the Supreme Court has not only "exposed" Gandhi, but further got the attention back on the "secret MoU that Gandhi-Vadra family had with China", he said. "Rahul is working under the remote control of foreign forces," Bhandari charged.

Probe Agency Arrests Conversion Gang Mastermind Chhangur Baba's Aide
A special PMLA court in Lucknow on Monday granted custody of Naveen Rohra, an alleged aide of Chhangur Baba, to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as part of a money-laundering investigation linked to an alleged illegal religious conversion racket in Uttar Pradesh, official sources said. Rohra was lodged in jail after the Uttar Pradesh Police Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested him some time back. The ED had moved a local court seeking his custodial remand for questioning and the court has granted his custody to the agency, the sources said. The agency had earlier claimed that all the immovable assets "acquired" by Chhangur Baba were in the names of Naveen Rohra and his wife Neetu Rohra to conceal his actual involvement in money laundering. It had, last month, taken a similar custody of Chhangur Baba alias Jamaluddin alias Karimulla Shah. Last month, the federal agency had conducted searches at Chhangur Baba's native place in Balrampur district and two places in Mumbai. The ED later claimed and said in a statement that the accused (Chhangur Baba) had received funds worth Rs 60 crore in 22 bank accounts, including "large amounts" from abroad. The money-laundering case against Chhangur Baba stems from the ATS FIR filed at a police station in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. Chhangur Baba, his son Mehboob and alleged associates Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra alias Nasreen were arrested by the ATS. The ATS complaint alleged a "large-scale" conspiracy involving unlawful religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funds and activities posing a potential threat to national security. "Chhangur Baba and his associates are alleged to have established an extensive network operating from the premises of the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur, where he regularly organised large gatherings attended by both Indian and foreign nationals," the ED had said. "He is accused of systematically inducing, coercing and manipulating individuals of other faiths, particularly Scheduled Castes and economically disadvantaged persons belonging to Hindu religion, into religious conversion," the agency had said. The agency has said it has analysed 22 bank accounts related to Chhangur Baba and his associates and it was found that funds worth more than Rs 60 crore were received by them. "It was also found that a large amount of funds has been received from foreign countries by Chhangur Baba and his associates," it has said. The searches also led to the seizure of a number of documents that show that the "proceeds of crime" (illicit funds) were majorly transferred to different people for purchasing a number of immovable properties worth crores of rupees and carrying out construction activities in these properties. Following the arrest of Chhangur Baba, alleged illegal constructions linked to him in Balrampur were razed by the district administration. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had described the actions of the accused as not only anti-social but also "anti-national".

Do not politicise my meeting with Stalin, says O. Panneerselvam
Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Monday rejected speculations about his likely association with the ruling DMK and further maintained his objective was to form Amma's government in the 2026 Assembly poll. He clarified that his recent comments on the Centre not releasing funds for Tamil Nadu under the Samagra Shiksha programme were not new, and he had flagged this as early as in August 2024. In a statement, Mr. Panneerselvam termed as 'indecent' the attempts by some to politicise his visit to Mr. Stalin's residence. 'The meeting was not related to politics,' he contended.'It is in the culture of the Tamils to visit and enquire about the well-being of someone, who has been under treatment in a hospital and has returned home, and to extend condolences if there is a loss in the family,' he said in a statement. Recalling his visit to the Chief Minister's residence, Mr. Panneerselvam explained that he visited only to enquire about the health of Mr. Stalin and express condolences over the passing of the latter's brother M.K. Muthu. He also rejected contentions and speculations which termed him as 'DMK's Team B', and he was about to forge an alliance with the DMK and maintained there was 'not even an iota of truth in it'. He recalled in June that he had condemned the Hindu Munnani over remarks made against late leaders Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and C.N. Annadurai. 'I have also condemned former BJP leaders who criticised Amma [former CM Jayalalithaa]. I have also recorded my support for the two-language policy,' he asserted. Mr. Panneerselvam added: 'I also directed to vote against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. Irrespective of wherever I am, I will walk on the path laid down by Amma for the rights and welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.'
