Liza Minnelli makes rare appearance to receive award on ‘RuPaul's Drag Race'
The legendary actor and singer received the Giving Us Lifetime Achievement Award on the April 18 episode of " RuPaul's Drag Race" for her "dazzling contributions to entertainment and sharing her irrepressible joy."
Minnelli, 79, was met with a roaring applause from the studio audience when she appeared on stage during the episode, donning a sequined monochromatic black ensemble.
She was poised on a podium center stage, seated in an opulent throne with one of her legs dangled over the arm of the chair.
Dancers performed in front to her song "Ring Them Bells," with Minnelli snapping her fingers along to the music as she took in the celebration. From the crowd, several of the contestants, as well as judges RuPaul, Michelle Visage and Carson Kressley, shook their bells, paying homage to Minnelli.
After the dancers' performance, RuPaul joined Minnelli on stage to talk to the singer about her outfit (Halston and Elsa Peretti, "of course," she said).
The icon showed off her wit during the interview, revealing that she had once gotten five costumes for Christmas. When asked by RuPaul if she still had them, she quipped, "Somewhere."
RuPaul also prompted Minnelli to reflect on her childhood, including her memories of watching dancers rehearse at MGM.
"Well, you know, everybody would rush to see whatever my mother was doing, and my father especially, because he was making people do magic," Minnelli explained, referring to her late mother and father, Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli. "Oh, he was the best."
Minnelli's half-brother, Joey Luft, was also in the studio audience to support his sister at the show.
RuPaul later took a moment to share his love — and the nation's — for Minnelli, earning a sincere response from the singer.
"Thank you. I don't what else to say except if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be me," Minnelli said. "You made me."
RuPaul shared a clever response, adding, "Well, you made us, actually."
Minnelli's appearance on "RuPaul's Drag Race" was rare, with the performer not often seen in public in recent years.
She previously presented the award for best picture at the Academy Awards in March 2022 alongside Lady Gaga, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.
During an October 2024 conversation with Michael Feinstein for Interview Magazine, she gave fans an inside look at her life today, explaining that she was "writing, creating, and working" with Christopher Young, whom she described as a "pure genius."
"I'm also recording again and producing with you, Michael, and Sam Haskell," she said. "Our baby business just keeps growing, and at this age that's a helluva good time."
Minnelli also shared some health advice, adding "You didn't ask, but I have one piece of advice: Take care of your body 'cause you might live longer than you expect to."

Girls Aloud star issues Strictly Come Dancing apology after major career move
Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts announced she would be returning to London's West End despite being tipped to appear on BBC Strictly Come Dancing Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts has extended her apologies to Strictly Come Dancing enthusiasts after revealing a significant career development. The 39-year-old singer was rumoured to be joining the beloved BBC dance competition in the coming weeks. Yet, Nicola's name was notably missing from the official line-up when it was unveiled. Instead, the pop sensation disclosed that she will be gracing the West End stage as Persephone in the musical 'Hadestown' starting September 16. During an interview with Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2, Nicola expressed her admiration for the production, which is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, calling it a "true masterpiece". While discussing her new venture, Nicola shared: "I start on Monday, it's very daunting, I went to see the show again on Friday and it's just unbelievable. They're so tight and just fantastic." Nicola acknowledged that many fans speculated about her participation in Strictly Come Dancing, saying: "I did get a lot of people asking me if it was Strictly, and Strictly's a great show but I want to sing." She elaborated on her decision, stating: "I did the Christmas special and I like to dance, but I love to sing, and so this is the perfect opportunity. I get to sing eight shows a week, great big massive songs, stretch my wings. Sorry to the Strictly fans." In the 2022 Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special, Nicola partnered with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, earning a score of 39 for their waltz to Silent Night. Alexandra Mardell and Kai Widdrington ultimately clinched the victory in the festive contest. Strictly Come Dancing is gearing up for its return to our screens in just a few weeks, with judges Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke all set to make a comeback. The beloved presenting duo Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman will also be back at the helm. This week saw the BBC reveal the first batch of celebrities ready to strut their stuff on the dance floor. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, the former Olympic athlete and Gladiators star better known as Nitro, was the first name dropped. Harry, who previously appeared in the Christmas Special, expressed his enthusiasm: "After the Christmas Special, it was so nice I just had to do it twice! I'm so excited to be part of the Strictly family this series and I'm ready to give it all I've got." He added, "I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track." Harry is set to compete against a diverse line-up including former Love Island contestant Dani Dyer, actor Alex Kingston, ex-Chelsea footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, and EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal. More Strictly participants will be announced over the next few weeks. In other news, Nicola is poised to make her Hadestown debut at the Lyric Theatre in London come September 16. Victoria Hamilton-Barritt will continue to play Persephone until then.

'Gorgeous and long lasting' perfume axed to £10 at Boots as shoppers stock up for Christmas
Britney Spears' Midnight Fantasy perfume was released in 2006 and remains a hallmark of festive gifting with notes of black cherry, freesia and musk Boots has slashed the price on a 'gorgeous' perfume, which customers say 'lasts all day', to just £10. Usually £28, Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy Eau de Parfum 30ml has been cut by £18, saving 64% on the RRP. The reduction is part of the retailer's weekly £10 Tuesday event, which sees prices cut on numerous items for one day only. The fragrance boasts top notes of black cherry, framboise and plum, with middle notes of freesia, night orchid and iris, whilst the base notes are amber, musk and vanilla. Released in 2006, the perfume is 'nostalgic' and is said to be a more 'sophisticated twist' on the original Fantasy fragrance. It's a popular affordable fragrance for gifting, and the new lower price could save shoppers money on Christmas gifts. But it's not the only budget-friendly, gifting-ready scent available at a discount. On Amazon, Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely Eau de Parfum for Women 30ml has been reduced by 65% from £25 to £10.10. Usually £66, Vera Wang Princess for Women Eau de Toilette 100ml has been reduced to £26. It's described as a 'sheer, fruity floral perfume' with notes of vanilla, exotic flowers and fruits. Meanwhile, the Calvin Klein Eternity Moment for Women Eau de Parfum 50ml, which was £59 but is currently £29.50 at Boots, features notes of bergamot, white lily, and white rose finish with spicy tones of sandalwood. The Britney Spears perfume boasts an overall online rating of 4.6 stars, with numerous glowing reviews. One said: "Gorgeous and long lasting smell for any age type. Recommend." Another added: "Great smelling perfume, scent lasts all day will purchase again,' while a third review read: "It's a very good perfume. It has a really nice and heavenly scent to it and lasts quite long." However, some shoppers claimed the fragrance didn't last very long, with one person writing: "This smells lovely but only lasts about an hour - very disappointed but I suppose you get what you pay for." Another added: "This product has a lovely scent however may not last for more than four hours so for those looking for a strong scent this may not be the scent to go for." Despite these concerns, many customers still praised the perfume. One shopper said: "I've recently rediscovered this after a long time, as it was a staple fragrance in my teen years. Smells just how I remember it. Fruity and sweet. It last for ages, especially when sprayed on clothes." One customer wrote: "Purchased as a Christmas present for a friend, she loves this perfume so it will be a lovely surprise for her." Another added: "One of my all time favourite perfumes, scent lasts all day. Will purchase again."

Gordon Ramsay made feelings very clear on Adam Peaty before wedding revelation
Three-time Olympic champion Adam Peaty completed a gruelling triathlon on Sunday, cheered on by his fiancee Holly and her family, including his future father-in-law and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay Olympic hero Adam Peaty was spurred on by his future father-in-law, the culinary titan Gordon Ramsay, as he powered through a punishing triathlon for 'Team Ramsay' this Sunday. The 30-year-old swimmer, boasting an impressive haul of three gold and three silver Olympic medals, tackled his first-ever triathlon at the T100 Triathlon World Tour. Cheering him on were his fiancee Holly Ramsay – Gordon's daughter whom Peaty is set to marry later this year – and Peaty's own son, George. Peaty wasn't alone in his athletic endeavour; his future mother-in-law, Tana, along with Ramsay siblings Megan, Tilly and Jack, all joined forces for the challenge. The star-studded event also saw McFly's Harry Judd and ex-racing driver Billy Monger among the competitors. Unfortunately, Ramsay, aged 58, had to sit out the physical exertion due to stitches in his cheek but played the enthusiastic supporter instead, following the doctor's orders. Participants faced a 2km swim, an 80km bike ride, and an 18km run, with Peaty completing the course in 2:34:37. A visibly exhausted Peaty was then embraced by a beaming Ramsay, who couldn't hide his pride as the Olympian gasped for air, reports Wales Online. Holly and little George were also there to congratulate him, with George planting a big kiss on his dad and holding up a sign declaring: "I love you. Go Daddy" to greet him. "Hardest thing I've ever done," Peaty admitted post-event, but he was quick to assert that he would "100% do it again." The swimming ace and his love Holly made their relationship official in 2023 and shared news of their engagement last year. It was Ramsay who accidentally disclosed the couple's wedding plans for the tail end of 2025. "It's going to be a Christmas wedding," the famed chef spilled the beans on The Jonathan Ross Show. "They're looking at areas and venues and lots of planning. "He's a very nice guy," Ramsay continued. "He's so down to earth and so focused and disciplined. He sat us down in Cornwall and he said 'Holly is just the perfect woman. I'd like to get your blessing - from you and Tana for her hand in marriage'. "It was that sort of amazing moment. Everything went quiet. As a future son-in-law, we couldn't ask for anyone better. He's so grounded. Those two get on so well. It's a blessing." With the festive nuptials on the horizon, Holly has let slip that her dad will be the mastermind behind the culinary delights on their special day. "Oh my goodness, he's been so excited from the beginning," she gushed to Closer Magazine. "We always talked about him doing the food." Last year, Holly announced her engagement on Instagram with a heartfelt message: "I am marrying my best friend. I truly cannot put into words how I am feeling right now. I still remember how big my smile was the morning I got home from my first date with you. Thank you for letting the little girl inside of me feel loved, seen and happier than ever. I love you and I cannot wait to be your wife." Peaty also shared his excitement on social media, writing: "I can't believe you're going to be my wife. I'm truly the luckiest man on earth to have such a gentle, caring and beautiful woman by my side. "You fill my heart to the brim and give my soul peace. Your family have always treated me so generously with their time, emotion and trust. I can't wait to be joined with them too."
