Girls Aloud star issues Strictly Come Dancing apology after major career move
Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts has extended her apologies to Strictly Come Dancing enthusiasts after revealing a significant career development. The 39-year-old singer was rumoured to be joining the beloved BBC dance competition in the coming weeks.
Yet, Nicola's name was notably missing from the official line-up when it was unveiled. Instead, the pop sensation disclosed that she will be gracing the West End stage as Persephone in the musical 'Hadestown' starting September 16.
During an interview with Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2, Nicola expressed her admiration for the production, which is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, calling it a "true masterpiece".
While discussing her new venture, Nicola shared: "I start on Monday, it's very daunting, I went to see the show again on Friday and it's just unbelievable. They're so tight and just fantastic."
Nicola acknowledged that many fans speculated about her participation in Strictly Come Dancing, saying: "I did get a lot of people asking me if it was Strictly, and Strictly's a great show but I want to sing."
She elaborated on her decision, stating: "I did the Christmas special and I like to dance, but I love to sing, and so this is the perfect opportunity. I get to sing eight shows a week, great big massive songs, stretch my wings. Sorry to the Strictly fans."
In the 2022 Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special, Nicola partnered with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, earning a score of 39 for their waltz to Silent Night. Alexandra Mardell and Kai Widdrington ultimately clinched the victory in the festive contest.
Strictly Come Dancing is gearing up for its return to our screens in just a few weeks, with judges Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke all set to make a comeback. The beloved presenting duo Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman will also be back at the helm.
This week saw the BBC reveal the first batch of celebrities ready to strut their stuff on the dance floor. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, the former Olympic athlete and Gladiators star better known as Nitro, was the first name dropped.
Harry, who previously appeared in the Christmas Special, expressed his enthusiasm: "After the Christmas Special, it was so nice I just had to do it twice! I'm so excited to be part of the Strictly family this series and I'm ready to give it all I've got."
He added, "I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track."
Harry is set to compete against a diverse line-up including former Love Island contestant Dani Dyer, actor Alex Kingston, ex-Chelsea footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, and EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal. More Strictly participants will be announced over the next few weeks.
In other news, Nicola is poised to make her Hadestown debut at the Lyric Theatre in London come September 16. Victoria Hamilton-Barritt will continue to play Persephone until then.

Back in June, Gary appeared to put his feud with brother Wayne to one side as they partied at a family wedding in Ibiza - and now they have taken yet another step towards putting their rift to bed. Tia shared the first glimpse of her lavish Mallorca wedding on Instagram on Wednesday - with her uncle clearly in attendance. She tied the knot with husband Harry Agombar, and her uncle Gary was sitting among the guests despite the 17-year feud between the Lineker brothers. Her father Wayne walked her down the alter and linked onto her arm as he did so. Tia looked stunning in a white dress, complete with a veil and huge bouquet of flowers. Her father walked beside her in a dapper black suit. BROTHERS REUNITE Gary was seen sitting among the guests, signalling a truce between the brothers. This was their second reunion in recent weeks. Back in June the former Match of the Day host's son Harry got married. Harry, 31, tied the knot with partner Bella in a luxurious ceremony on the Spanish island of Ibiza. Gary Lineker reveals Match of the Day blunder he made in last-ever appearance for first time in 26 years Spirits were high as all the family celebrated together beneath the sunshine. GARY AND WAYNE'S FEUD The two brothers are believed to have fallen out while Gary was with his second wife Danielle Bux. They travelled to Ibiza to visit Wayne but the trip broke their close relationship, which saw an end to their weekly phone calls. He told The Sun in 2015: "In my opinion, Danielle cost me my relationship with my brother. "Sadly Gary is no longer a part of my life. "They came to Ibiza in August 2008 and it was really awkward. "I didn't spark with Danielle and our relationship was cold." Wayne was Gary's best man at his first wedding to Michelle Cockayne in 1986. But the club owner did not attend as the ex-BBC host tied to knot with Danielle because his invite did not extend to his girlfriend at the time Ana Tanaka. Opening up on the brother's relationship in a recent interview with The Mail, Wayne said: "It's not so good to be honest, we don't really speak very often. "I'll always be his number one fan."

Major blow to Louis Theroux's girlband project as another huge group decline invite following Spice Girls' snub
TV insider reveals how girlbands are concerned what viewers saw in Boybands Forever may also happen to them SHOW KNOCK-BACK Major blow to Louis Theroux's girlband project as another huge group decline invite following Spice Girls' snub Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) GIRLS ALOUD have turned down an offer to appear in Louis Theroux's girlband documentary – following a similar knock-back from the Spice Girls. Girlbands Forever, set to air on BBC Two, is being filmed now and tells the story of the rise of this distinctly Nineties and Noughties phenomenon. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 8 Girls Aloud have turned down an offer to appear in Louis Theroux's girlband documentary Credit: Splash The show was given the green light following the huge success of three-parter Boybands Forever which aired last November on BBC Two. Last month I revealed the Say You'll Be There singers had rejected a personal approach from Louis to talk on the show. Now Cheryl Tweedy and her bandmates have followed suit. A TV insider said: 'This documentary has huge potential to be controversial — that's what viewers saw happen with Boybands Forever, which was made by the same team. 'It picked apart the many negative points associated with being in these pop groups, exposing divisions, bust-ups, resentments and recriminations. 'The concern for those groups taking part in the girlbands version is that it might end up doing similar. 'It now raises the question of how you can make a documentary about girl bands without two of the prime examples being a part of it.' Although the two biggest female groups of the era aren't contributing as talking heads, it's understood others still will be. They include members of Eternal, All Saints, Atomic Kitten and Sugababes. As with music mogul Simon Cowell's chat for last year's programme, some of the interviews will likely be face to face with Louis, whose production company Mindhouse is currently making the new show. In Boybands Forever, Robbie Williams discussed his turbulent time in Take That, and members of East 17, 911, Damage and 5ive all outlined the many issues that came with fame. But even a personal invite from Louis couldn't bag the Spice Girls or Girls Aloud, which is pretty tricky given that Mindhouse is hoping to have the project in the can and ready to air by this October. At least that's one way of looking at the story at the heart of Prime Video's new thriller which drops on September 10. But as the newly released trailer for the drama shows, it's not clear whether she's the baddie, or if it's actually her son's seriously suspicious new lover, Cherry, played by Olivia Cooke. Based on Michelle Frances' novel of the same name, this is another one of those offerings from the streamers with a distinctly trans-Atlantic feel since it stars both American and US actors. Set in London, the mind-bending six-parter will have you constantly questioning your perception. Which of the two single-minded women is the real villain, or are they equally bad and just bring out the worst in one another? A LAUR GOING ON AT HOME 8 Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has been filming a fly-on-the-wall TV show Credit: PA HE is back on the box with Channel 4's Outrageous Homes, but Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen could soon be inviting you into his own gaff. The star has been filming a fly-on-the-wall TV show at the six-bed Gloucestershire pile he shares with his wife Jackie, plus daughter Hermione, her husband and two children. Not to mention their eldest daughter Cecile, her hubby and two kids, who also live there in a converted annexe. Laurence told Women's Weekly: 'It's an artificial affectation, this idea that children have to leave the nest, the old are left to decline in remote, beige spaces, while the young find they have no childcare or time for themselves. 'Why don't more people pool their resources? I like the idea of it being very inspirational.' I don't see it working in my two-bed in Southwark. 2.4m SEE ISLE DUO CACH IN 8 Cach Mercer and Toni Laites are crowned winners by Maya Jama on Love Island Credit: Shutterstock Editorial THIS year's Love Island is proof that sex sells. New statistics show that following a raunchy run, the dating show's final was its most watched since Ekin-Su Culculoglu's record-breaking year in 2022. An average 2.4million viewers saw Toni Laites and Cach Mercer bag the £50,000 prize after being crowned winners by host Maya Jama last week. ITV says series 12 also delivered its highest 16 to 34-year-old audience of the year, averaging 1.1 million in the demographic. The show's streams have hit 173 million – up eight per cent year on year. It's solid stuff amid a testing time for ITV. No wonder the channel has locked in another All Stars series for January. BEAR GIG A PICNIC FOR LIZ 8 Liz Hurley's next project is about drug-dealing Bears Credit: Rex Features LIZ HURLEY has a wacky project on the horizon – about drug-dealing Bears. The actress, who is just about to star in Channel 4's The Inheritance, told the Travel Secrets podcast: 'I also have an animated show which is actually really good fun. 'I did it with my old friend Brendan Fraser. 'We did a movie together back in the day called Bedazzled. Even though we sort of love each other, I hadn't seen him for so long. 'It's called Breaking Bear and is all about some bears who cook up meth to sell. I mean, it's outrageous. 'I play the wolf queen who tries to kill them all. It's really good fun.' Not an animation for the kids, then. JILL SCOTT and Lionesses including Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly and Fran Kirby have cameo roles in new CBeebies show Football Fantastics. The comedy series follows six friends at a local footy group and is on CBeebies and iPlayer now.

EastEnders star sparks exit fears after announcement amid devastating 'split'
Suki Panesar looked like she had lost everything in tonight's EastEnders as the character was exposed for her request to pregnant granddaughter Avani Nandra-Hart It was an emotional night for the Panesar/Gulati family in tonight's EastEnders, as Suki was 'disowned' by her whole family after the truth about Avani's pregnancy was revealed. Now fans fear we could be seeing an exit for the character - especially after the actor's recent Strictly announcement. Last night, Eve took Avani to get a termination without Suki's knowledge. In previous scenes, we had seen Suki asking Avani to keep the baby for herself and Eve to bring up. Although Avani was up for the plan at first, she later disclosed to Eve that she had changed her mind. In tonight's episode, the aftermath of the revelation continued, with Ravi and Priya unleashing their fury onto Suki for her actions. An angry Priya even went as far as to slap Suki across the face, but that wasn't the least of her troubles. Later on in the episode, she took Avani to hospital after she was experiencing heavy bleeding, and once again met a furious Ravi and Priya in the hospital corridors. As she left them alone to make their way back home, Suki was left with even more panic when she found her grandson Nugget and son Vinny packing their things to move out the house. However, they weren't the only ones, as wife Eve also had the same idea. A tearful Eve then called out Suki for opening her up to the hurt of losing out on motherhood - something she had never been open to in the past. "I don't know what we've got left anymore," Eve said as she made her way out the door, leaving Suki in tears. Now, fans fear a split between one of their favourite couples - especially as it was recently announced actor Balvinder Sopal would be appearing on this year's Strictly Come Dancing. "Oh dear! Is Suki about to have a #strictly sized break after a massive argument with Eve?" said one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, while another said: "Don't think #SukEve will survive this!" A third said: "I think the suki and avani storyline is a build up to suki temporary exit for strictly and also maybe the reveal of joel recording avani..." But is this the end of SukEve as we know it? With nothing left in Walford for Suki - will she be making a sharp exit? When Balvinder's Strictly announcement was made, many fans were convinced the character would be leaving for an extended period of time. Many believed she would go off to visit her daughter Ash in Canada to try and make amends after the rest of her family has ultimately disowned her. However, the actor revealed she'd still be working alongside Strictly rehearsals, as she said: "I'll still be working here so I'll be doing two jobs. I don't know how I'm going to handle it. I don't know what's gonna happen but I'm looking forward to it." EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
