Tamil Nadu govt announce Rs 40 crore training centre for competitive exam aspirants
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday announced that a training centre with modern facilities that can accommodate 500 aspirants preparing for competitive exams will be constructed at Shenoy Nagar in Anna Nagar at a cost of Rs 40 crore.
Making the announcement in the Assembly, Stalin expressed satisfaction over the success of the initiative launched under the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme to support candidates preparing for UPSC exams. He noted the number of successful candidates from Tamil Nadu had been on the decline after 2016, dropping to just 27 in 2017. To reverse this trend, the government launched several initiatives under the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme.
These include providing Rs 7,500 per month for 10 months to 1,000 selected candidates preparing for the preliminary examination and Rs 25,000 for those preparing for the main examination. In addition, these aspirants also received training through the All India Services Coaching Centre at the Anna Administrative Staff College, the chief minister said.
Highlighting the impact of these measures, Stalin said 50 out of the 57 candidates who cleared the UPSC examination from Tamil Nadu this year had benefited from the scheme. The CM also said a felicitation ceremony will soon be held at the Anna Administrative College to honour these candidates in which he will participate. He added infrastructure initiatives such as the construction of the hostel in Anna Nagar are essential to further increase the number of successful candidates from the state.
Under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme, the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation already operates a study hall in Anna Nagar. A government-run hostel in the same locality, which has emerged as a hub for competitive exam aspirants with several private coaching centres, libraries and student hostels, will help candidates from underprivileged backgrounds to reside there and prepare for the exams, officials said.

Rs 1.5k-cr govt land cleared of scrap godowns & sheds in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: A govt land — valued at Rs 1,500 crore — in Sector 21 was cleared on Tuesday. The anti-encroachment drive saw demolition of 20 scrap godowns and 30 tin-set rooms and huts using bulldozers. Originally acquired by Haryana Urban Development Authority (now HSVP) in the late 1970s, this area was meant for developing a sector. The team cleared about 15 acres of Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP)-owned land till evening. An HSVP official said the enforcement will continue on Wednesday, with a total of around 22 acres set to be cleared in the coming days. The official said, "Any future attempts to encroach will lead to FIRs and strict legal action." The drive saw heavy police deployment from Sector 22 police station. The enforcement was carried out in the presence of district nodal officer RS Batth along with a team of HSVP officials. Duty magistrate and SDE Surendra Babbar was also present. Soon after the operation began around noon, it faced resistance from locals and land claimants. Residents said some of the landowners rented out their plots to small-scale waste management firms for around Rs 30,000-Rs 40,000 per month. Last year, a major fire broke out, which took the fire department six hours to douse the flames. Batth said no structures can be built on land under litigation and asked the encroachers to remove their belongings before Wednesday's enforcement drive. "We won't tolerate any encroachment on govt land. We will follow the law, offer time to vacate, but will not hesitate to take strict action if needed," Batth said. According to an HSVP official, two days prior to the operation, public announcements were made in the area warning occupants to vacate the land. The drive was carried out as per orders from HSVP estate officer-I Rakesh Saini. In 2013, Punjab and Haryana high court ruled that only vacant plots could be acquired by the state govt. Those on which construction was carried out could not be acquired unless the land was needed for setting up essential public utilities such as roads, water and electricity infrastructure, the HC said. Haryana govt subsequently appealed against this decision and the case is pending before Supreme Court.

The Mayor stated that a survey of the facilities across all community centres in Chandigarh will be done, after which the prices of these facilities and other policy guidelines shall be decided. The matter is now expected to come up in the next House meeting.

Worker electrocuted during repair work, kin stage protest
Mohali: A tragic incident in the village of Mor Thikri in Derabassi claimed the life of 34-year-old contract worker, Lakhveer Singh, who was electrocuted while repairing an overhead power line. The deceased, a resident of Matwale village, is survived by his wife and two children. According to eyewitnesses and family members, Lakhveer Singh climbed a transformer on Monday to carry out repairs when he suffered an electric shock, which caused him to fall to his death. The incident has sparked outrage, with the victim's family and local farmer union leaders accusing Powercom of gross negligence. On Tuesday, grieving family members staged a protest outside the Powercom office, joined by representatives of farmer organisations. Protesters alleged that Powercom failed to secure the required safety permit before initiating repair work, because of which the transformer was live during the task. "Had power supply been shut down, this tragedy could have been averted," a protester said. The victim had reportedly been working under a private contractor associated with Powercom for the past three years.
