Tamil Nadu govt announce Rs 40 crore training centre for competitive exam aspirants

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday announced that a training centre with modern facilities that can accommodate 500 aspirants preparing for competitive exams will be constructed at Shenoy Nagar in Anna Nagar at a cost of Rs 40 crore.
Making the announcement in the Assembly, Stalin expressed satisfaction over the success of the initiative launched under the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme to support candidates preparing for UPSC exams. He noted the number of successful candidates from Tamil Nadu had been on the decline after 2016, dropping to just 27 in 2017. To reverse this trend, the government launched several initiatives under the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme.
These include providing Rs 7,500 per month for 10 months to 1,000 selected candidates preparing for the preliminary examination and Rs 25,000 for those preparing for the main examination. In addition, these aspirants also received training through the All India Services Coaching Centre at the Anna Administrative Staff College, the chief minister said.
Highlighting the impact of these measures, Stalin said 50 out of the 57 candidates who cleared the UPSC examination from Tamil Nadu this year had benefited from the scheme. The CM also said a felicitation ceremony will soon be held at the Anna Administrative College to honour these candidates in which he will participate. He added infrastructure initiatives such as the construction of the hostel in Anna Nagar are essential to further increase the number of successful candidates from the state.
Under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme, the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation already operates a study hall in Anna Nagar. A government-run hostel in the same locality, which has emerged as a hub for competitive exam aspirants with several private coaching centres, libraries and student hostels, will help candidates from underprivileged backgrounds to reside there and prepare for the exams, officials said.

Rs 1.5k-cr govt land cleared of scrap godowns & sheds in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: A govt land — valued at Rs 1,500 crore — in Sector 21 was cleared on Tuesday. The anti-encroachment drive saw demolition of 20 scrap godowns and 30 tin-set rooms and huts using bulldozers. Originally acquired by Haryana Urban Development Authority (now HSVP) in the late 1970s, this area was meant for developing a sector. The team cleared about 15 acres of Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP)-owned land till evening. An HSVP official said the enforcement will continue on Wednesday, with a total of around 22 acres set to be cleared in the coming days. The official said, "Any future attempts to encroach will lead to FIRs and strict legal action." The drive saw heavy police deployment from Sector 22 police station. The enforcement was carried out in the presence of district nodal officer RS Batth along with a team of HSVP officials. Duty magistrate and SDE Surendra Babbar was also present. Soon after the operation began around noon, it faced resistance from locals and land claimants. Heated arguments broke out at the site, but Batth intervened, urging them to vacate peacefully. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fortaleça sua mente com Neurolin — Promoção imperdível: 15% OFF + 2 frascos grátis Corpo & Ciência Notícias Undo Over the years, this vacant land had turned into an illegal waste dumping and processing spot. Residents said some of the landowners rented out their plots to small-scale waste management firms for around Rs 30,000-Rs 40,000 per month. Last year, a major fire broke out, which took the fire department six hours to douse the flames. Batth said no structures can be built on land under litigation and asked the encroachers to remove their belongings before Wednesday's enforcement drive. "We won't tolerate any encroachment on govt land. We will follow the law, offer time to vacate, but will not hesitate to take strict action if needed," Batth said. According to an HSVP official, two days prior to the operation, public announcements were made in the area warning occupants to vacate the land. The drive was carried out as per orders from HSVP estate officer-I Rakesh Saini. In 2013, Punjab and Haryana high court ruled that only vacant plots could be acquired by the state govt. Those on which construction was carried out could not be acquired unless the land was needed for setting up essential public utilities such as roads, water and electricity infrastructure, the HC said. Haryana govt subsequently appealed against this decision and the case is pending before Supreme Court.

High drama, ruckus mars meet as AAP-BJP councillors clash over water crisis, terminated staff

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) House meeting held on Tuesday turned chaotic as intense arguments broke out between the councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The meeting remained entangled in disruptions and protests, with major issues like the city's water crisis, the termination of 664 tube well operators, and the alleged Rs 100-crore community centre scam dominating discussions. The session, which started with noise and slogan-shouting, got derailed early, with the approval of previous minutes and the Zero Hour session overlapping amid continuous disruptions. Post-lunch, discussions turned even more heated when Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla directly brought forth a proposal to grant temporary water connections to residents outside the Lal Dora (revenue) limits of 22 villages. This move drew strong objections from AAP councillors, who accused the Mayor of skipping the agenda order, leading to a noisy altercation with the BJP members. The discussion in the House largely revolved around water scarcity, poor quality supply, and the controversial dismissal of 664 tube well operators. AAP councillor Suman Sharma from Mauli Jagran raised concerns about the supply of contaminated water in her ward, even bringing a visibly dirty water bottle to the House as evidence. She faced counter arguments from BJP councillors including Sarbjit Kaur and nominated councillor Geeta Chauhan, who questioned the number of water tankers sent to Sharma's ward. During the same debate, Congress councillor Gurpreet Singh Gabi questioned Rs 30 crore consultancy fee paid under the city's ambitious 24×7 water supply project, terming it 'a gross misuse of public money' and demanded the project be scrapped and investigated by vigilance authorities. Gabi also lashed out at the civic body for terminating tube well operators, stating that these employees were not just workers but custodians of clean water for over 14 lakh residents. 'If one operator is responsible for starting three tube wells, and something is mixed into the water during that time, who will be held accountable — the Mayor or the officials,' he asked. Banner protests, cheque controversy, and ignored allegations At the start of the session, tensions escalated further when Congress and AAP councillors brandished photocopies of cheques worth Rs 92 crore and Rs 238 crore, respectively, which they alleged were promised grants that have yet to be received by the MC. This was in stark contrast to the last session, when BJP councillors had distributed sweets to celebrate the UT Administrator's announcement of fund approvals. While the Congress raised the funding issue, the AAP councillors held up banners demanding action on the alleged scam in free community centre bookings, a matter they had previously highlighted in a press conference on June 1. However, the topic saw no substantial discussion beyond morning protests, despite anticipation of major revelations. Commissioner's dissent on reinstating tube well operators During the confirmation of previous meeting minutes, BJP councillor Kanwarjit Singh Rana raised the issue of reinstating the 664 terminated tube well operators. Many councillors supported the demand, including the Mayor. However, Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar formally recorded his dissent note, citing the MC's current financial crisis and stating that the final decision rests with the administration, not the elected body. 'No one is above the law,' he said. Clashes within and between parties The already tense atmosphere worsened when BJP councillors Kanwarjit Singh Rana and Dilip Sharma got into a heated argument on the House floor over the timing of discussions related to the tube well operator documents. The scuffle forced the Mayor to call a five-minute break just before 1 pm to avoid further embarrassment. Later, another confrontation occurred between AAP councillor Ramchandra Yadav and BJP's Kanwarjit Rana over the RFP for community centres. The verbal spat nearly turned physical, but fellow councillors intervened to de-escalate the situation. AAP stages walkout AAP councillor Yogesh Dhingra staged a walkout in protest, claiming that AAP members were intentionally denied a chance to speak during the proceedings. The AAP's Chandigarh unit president Vijaypal Singh issued a strong statement, alleging that the BJP was running the House like a 'dictatorship,' deliberately suppressing public interest issues and shielding a Rs 100 crore scam related to community center bookings. 'This is not just about documents or procedures. This is about transparency, accountability, and the voice of the people,' he said, asserting that AAP will continue to raise issues affecting the poor and marginalized. Agenda on community centre prices deferred The agenda on the policy guidelines for management of the community centres and dharamshalas in Chandigarh, was deferred. The Mayor stated that a survey of the facilities across all community centres in Chandigarh will be done, after which the prices of these facilities and other policy guidelines shall be decided. The matter is now expected to come up in the next House meeting.

Worker electrocuted during repair work, kin stage protest

Mohali: A tragic incident in the village of Mor Thikri in Derabassi claimed the life of 34-year-old contract worker, Lakhveer Singh, who was electrocuted while repairing an overhead power line. The deceased, a resident of Matwale village, is survived by his wife and two children. According to eyewitnesses and family members, Lakhveer Singh climbed a transformer on Monday to carry out repairs when he suffered an electric shock, which caused him to fall to his death. The incident has sparked outrage, with the victim's family and local farmer union leaders accusing Powercom of gross negligence. On Tuesday, grieving family members staged a protest outside the Powercom office, joined by representatives of farmer organisations. Protesters alleged that Powercom failed to secure the required safety permit before initiating repair work, because of which the transformer was live during the task. "Had power supply been shut down, this tragedy could have been averted," a protester said. The victim had reportedly been working under a private contractor associated with Powercom for the past three years. His family claimed that despite the fatality, no official from Powercom visited them or offered support. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like ¡Trading con IA en Chile ayuda a usuarios a obtener ganancias potenciales! "We will not cremate the body till justice is served," said one of the protesters. They also cited the recent death of another lineman, Gagandeep, who died in similar circumstances days ago, raising further questions about the department's safety protocols. When approached for comment, SDO Gurjinder Singh confirmed that an inquiry had been initiated. "A detailed investigation is underway. Strict action will follow based on the findings," he said. As of the time of reporting, the protest continues, with tensions running high among villagers demanding accountability and support for the bereaved family. MSID:: 121600219 413 |
