What Matt Martin's expectations are for new role in Islanders front office

New York Post04-07-2025
Matt Martin always had interest in moving to a front-office role during his playing career.
So when the Islanders offered him a role as special assistant to GM Mathieu Darche, it was a pretty easy call.

'For now, it's just about I really do want to learn the ins and outs of everything,' Martin said. 'I think Darchy said I'm gonna have the ability to do a lot of different things. Spend some time with the scouts this week, at the draft. Pretty cool to see all the behind-the-scenes things that as a player you don't focus on or think about. That's a totally different perspective.'
Martin has only been in the job a week but expects to play a role in every part of the Islanders' operations.
That could include everything from the AHL club in Bridgeport to player development to evaluation and beyond.

In a perfect world, he'd like to build a long front-office career to go with the one he just finished as a player.
'Spent, obviously, a lot of time with Lou [Lamoriello], learned a lot from him. The first week or so with Darche, learned a lot from him too,' Martin said. 'I think the Islanders organization is in great hands with him. Pretty innovative guy, has a lot of ideas. Excited to learn from him and work with him.'
Speaking publicly for the first time since announcing his retirement as a player, Martin didn't have much to say as far as reflecting on his career.

His emotions ahead of what ended up being his final home game said more than he could, anyway.
For now, he's more interested in looking forward than back.
'[Darche] said it to me 100 times that he wants to be challenged, wants to hear thoughts and ideas. It's been a great relationship so far,' Martin said. 'I've really enjoyed spending time with him. Look forward to learning a lot more from him, just like I did from Lou.'

Fourth-round pick Tomas Poletin told The Post he plans to play next season with the WHL's Kelowna Rockets after being taken first in the CHL Import Draft on Wednesday.
Second-rounder Daniil Prokhorov was also selected by the OHL's Sarnia Sting.
'I think it'd be perfect for him playing in the OHL,' Bridgeport coach Rocky Thompson said of the 6-foot-6 Russian.
Bridgeport announced the hires of David Cunniff and Chad Kolarik as assistant coaches.

Andrey Rublev may be rounding into form. The World No. 11 has endured a turbulent year, lacking the consistency that made him one of the 'best of the rest' behind Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic. Rublev has won six of his last seven matches, with the lone defeat coming to Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Masters. The Russian has not faced the toughest path to get to the same stage of the Cincinnati Masters, but he did navigate a tricky match with World No. 19 Alexei Popyrin in the Round of 32. The Spaniard has won 27 of his last 28 matches, with his lone defeat coming against Sinner in the Wimbledon Final. This is Alcaraz's first tournament since that contest, but he's shown very little in the form of rust. He did drop a set against veteran Damir Dzumhur in his first match, but that's not unexpected after such a long layoff. Andrey Rublev in action at ATP Cincinnati. Getty Images Rublev, meanwhile, has been quite busy during the North American hard-court swing, playing Los Cabos, Washington, and Canada before heading to Cincinnati. That's not out of character for the ever-busy Rublev, but you have to wonder how his legs will hold up against a fresh Alcaraz. In the last meeting between these two, which came in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, we successfully backed Rublev to win the first set. That approach could pay off again in this tussle, as the longer this contest goes, the more the scales will tip in Alcaraz's favor. Martin on Dessers injury, 'outside noise' & shots faced

Russell Martin has been speaking to the media before Rangers face Alloa Atheltic in the Premier Sports Cup this weekend. Here are the key lines from the Ibrox boss: The knee injury suffered by Cyriel Dessers in midweek as not as bad as first feared. The striker is "still stiff and sore" but could be fit to face Club Brugge on Tuesday night. On reports Jefte is poised for a £6m move to Palmeiras: "I think the club will update you as and when it becomes something. He's in this morning. I guess that's all I can give you as the manager right now." On links to Real Betis defender Nobel Mendy: "He doesn't play for us, so I can't tell you anything about him. I've never met a kid, never spoke to him in my life. So, yeah, I don't really know." Martin won't "make 11 changes" but is set to shuffle the team for the Alloa tie, which is one Rangers "want to win but also have to balance". He says: "We had five games in 14 days. Some of the guys played a lot of minutes. So it's a chance for some people to get on the pitch." On Rangers' Scottish Cup defeat to lower-league Queen's Park last season: "It's completely gone. Some of them [the players] are probably part of that. I don't see any benefit in me bringing it up." After struggling to break down Dundee's low block in the 1-1 draw last weekend, Rangers have "done a lot of work on that since and hopefully you'll see that tomorrow". On criticism of Rangers' early-season performances, Martin is keen to block out "outside noise". He adds: "When you come and work for a big club like this, you have to accept that there's going to be so many opinions, ex-players, supporters, but we have to just focus on what we can focus on. So it really doesn't affect, or it shouldn't affect what we're doing here." Martin says he was speaking to a member of the maintenance staff who said, "We are turning the tank around gaffer" and that's exactly how he feels about the situation. Martin "loved" that the players were frustrated with some of the aspects of the performance in Plzen "because I think their understanding is growing. Their belief in what they're doing is growing. And at some point, it will all really pay off for them". On Rangers conceding 97 shots in their opening six games, Martin is "not happy" with it but says "perspective and context" is required. He adds: "I got made aware of it this week by the analysts who then did a real detailed breakdown of it. So over half the shots were from well outside the box. The two games that we've given away too many chances are Panathinaikos and Plzen, and we're playing two teams away from home in Europe. They're 2-0 and 3-0 down and committing numbers forward that we haven't usually seen them doing. So we can definitely negate that and stop that." Martin has "no problem" with Andy Halliday criticising his tactics: "I like Andy, I regard him as a really good ex-team-and a good person. But when you work in the media, you have to give an opinion, right? Although I never have said we're going to play an inverted full-back, so I have told him that."

Khamzat Chimaev-Dricus Du Plessis UFC 319 press conference ignites crowd

Khamzat Chimaev looked delighted. The source of his mirth was a boisterous crowd gathered in Chicago for the final press conference before he fights UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319 on Saturday, Aug. 16. Boos drowned out Du Plessis as he tried to answer the first question. 'Well, that was one of the best boos I've heard,'' Du Plessis said when the noise finally died down. 'Well done, gents, well done.'' Almost as loud as the boos were the cheers for Chimaev, the Russian-born fighter with a bushy beard, scarred lip and mischievous grin. He has electrified fans with brutal victories en route to a 14-0 record and his first title show almost feels overdue as he prepares to face South Africa's Du Plessis (23-2). 'Are you asking me if this is the fight of the year?'' UFC's Dana White said in response to a question at the press conference, and he grinned. 'Yes, this is a big fight.'' Maybe even bigger than initally realized gauged by the energy of the crowd that Chimaev fed with the grin and tough talk. 'Just going to go and (mess) him up, bro,'' he said of Du Plessis. 'That's it, man.'' Chimaev also said, 'I come to take over, man. Take his head.'' Take his head? The crowd roared. Of course the real show will take place in the octagon at the United Center when the 31-year-old fighters clash in a fight scheduled for five rounds. 'You have two of the best in the world right now in their prime for the title,'' White said. 'This is one of the best fights we've had in a long time. I don't know how it plays out.'' The sound of the crowd will let everyone know.
