‘Fierce' and ‘forthright' councillor becomes city's new mayor

Cllr Kate Thomas took up the role as Newport's 393rd mayor at a ceremony on Tuesday May 13, and amended the words of her official oath, declaring she would serve 'the people of Newport' as well as King Charles III.
After moving to the city in 2000, Cllr Thomas was elected to represent the Stow Hill ward in 2012 – which was also the last time Newport had a female mayor.
'Newport has fantastic people, an incredible history and with features like the river, the Victorian parks and the wetlands, it is an amazing place to live, work and get out and about in,' said Cllr Thomas.
'We have so much to be proud of – Newport is growing and its people are great.'
Cllr Thomas' mayoral charities for the coming year are Book Trust Cymru and Little People UK.
Announcing the nomination, council leader Cllr Dimitri Batrouni said Cllr Thomas is 'fierce, forthright and will hold her ground – that sounds like Newport to me'.
Opposition group leader Cllr Matthew Evans congratulated Cllr Thomas on having the 'great honour to serve the people of Newport'.
He said Cllr Thomas had 'always made an active contribution to debates', and her 'passion is there for all to see'.
Outgoing mayor Cllr Ray Mogford reflected on the 'incredible honour' of representing Newport that he and wife Sallie felt during the past year, and meeting 'so many people doing fantastic work' across the city.
Some £17,000 has been raised for Cllr Mogford's mayoral charities, Sparkle and the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA).
Cllr Stephen Marshall was chosen as the deputy mayor, succeeding Cllr Chris Reeks.

FanDuel bans bettor over heckling incident with Olympic champion Gabby Thomas

A sports bettor who heckled Olympic champion sprinter Gabby Thomas during a Grand Slam Track event in Philadelphia over the weekend has been banned by the betting site FanDuel Sportsbook. In a statement on Wednesday, FanDuel wrote it "condemns in the strongest terms abusive behavior directed towards athletes. Threatening or harassing athletes is unacceptable and has no place in sports. This customer is no longer able to wager with FanDuel." Last weekend, Thomas finished fourth in a 100-meter race won by Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. The bettor wrote in a post on social media that he "made Gabby lose by heckling her. And it made my parlay win." He posted a picture of his parlay that had Jefferson-Wooden winning the 100. Thomas, the 200-meter champion at the Paris Games last summer, explained the heckling incident on X. She wrote: "This grown man followed me around the track as I took pictures and signed autographs for fans (mostly children) shouting personal insults — anybody who enables him online is gross." Grand Slam Track, a track league launched by Hall of Fame sprinter Michael Johnson this spring, wrote in a statement it was "conducting a full investigation into the reprehensible behavior captured on video. "We are working to identify the individual involved and will take appropriate action as necessary. We will implement additional safeguards to help prevent incidents like this in the future. Let us be clear, despicable behavior like this will not be tolerated." ESPN first reported the bettor had been banned by FanDuel. The Grand Slam Track season wraps up with the fourth and final meet in Los Angeles on June 28-29. The Thomas incident is the latest in a string of stalking and abuse of female athletes. Frida Karlsson, a Swedish cross-country skiing world champion, recently brought her experience with stalking into public view when she went through a trial. A man in his 60s was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay 40,000 kronor ($4,100) in damages after being convicted of stalking Karlsson for a year and four months, according to Swedish news agency TT. The man, according to the indictment, called Karlsson 207 times, left her voicemails and text messages and approached her, including outside her apartment. In February, police in the United Arab Emirates detained a man who caused British tennis player Emma Raducanu distress by exhibiting " fixated behavior " toward he at a tennis tournament. Raducanu had been approached by the man at the Dubai Championships where he left her a note, took her photograph and engaged in behavior that caused her distress, according to the government of Dubai's media office.

Future could be bright after sale of Girvan's former Davidson Cottage Hospital

Hopes are high for a positive future after Girvan's much-loved former Davidson Cottage Hospital was sold at a recent auction. Girvan 's much-loved former Davidson Cottage Hospital could be in for a bright future after the vacant building was sold at auction. The Davidson, as it was commonly known, closed in 2013 after the new Girvan Community Hospital opened. ‌ Following a "fierce bidding war," the property sold for £180,000 at a recent auction held by the Online Property Auction Group. ‌ Currently listed as "low" on the Buildings at Risk Register, the condition of the B-Listed building was described as "fair" when it was last visited in 2014. Gifted to Girvan by Thomas, James and Janet Davidson in memory of their mother Margaret, the Davidson looked after the people of town for more than 90 years. Built in 1921 to designs by Watson, Salmond & Gray, the Davidson was opened on June 15, 1922 by 88-year-old Thomas, the sole surviving benefactor, alongside Provost Hervey of Girvan. At its peak, the Davidson boasted a round-the-clock doctor-led casualty service and maternity services. After closing, the Davidson was sold by the NHS to Ailsa Horizons in 2015. Later that year, Historic Environment Scotland awarded £66,940 from the Building Repair Grant Scheme towards its conversion but this never came to pass. ‌ Ailsa Horizons ceased trading in 2016 and was subsequently dissolved in 2019. As a result, the Davidson was sold again in 2017. ‌ Planning applications by a Mr John Lennon for a part change of use and alterations of the former hospitals to form two dwellings were approved by South Ayrshire Council in 2021. Online Property Auction Group boss, Timothy Lovat, said: 'I'm not surprised there was so much interest in this site. 'The Davidson is a mansion house offering a unique blend of historic charm and development potential, within central Girvan, a short distance from the town centre and local amenities. ‌ 'It is ideal for a variety of commercial uses including healthcare, office space, wellness centre or boutique accommodation. 'At the rear of the property is a standalone 3-bedroom house which would be perfect for renovation. 'This is an ideal investment opportunity for developers, business owners or investors seeking 4,000 square metres of prime land in a scenic and accessible part of South Ayrshire.'

Ryan Thomas stole a car from the house and used it to drive to another property from which he stole a second car which he then used in a ramraid on a shop. Swansea Crown Court heard the defendant had a history of committing burglaries and car offences, and that, by the time police identified him as being a suspect in the burglaries, he was already serving a prison sentence for smashing his way into a different shop and stealing thousands of pounds worth of tobacco and e-cigarettes. ‌ Dean Pulling, prosecuting, said that on the night of March 31, 2023, in the early hours of the following morning the defendant drove to west Wales from his home in the Merthyr area before breaking into a house in Broad Street in Llandovery. ‌ He said the defendant took car keys and a box of bottles of Budweiser beer from the property before stealing the householder's Toyota Yaris vehicle. Thomas then drove the damaged Volvo to Swansea where he torched and abandoned it. The prosecutor said the three burglaries were separately reported to police by the victims, and investigations were launched which subsequently linked them. ‌ The court heard crime scene investigators recovered fingerprints from a cat flap at the first property and found the intruder had been able to access the door handle by putting his arm through the flap. Video doorbell footage recovered by officers investigating the second house burglary caught the defendant entering the hallway of the property. Meanwhile, part of the number plate of the Volvo was found at the scene of the garage ramraid. ‌ The prosecutor said that by the time police had identified Thomas as a suspect in the three burglaries he was already serving a sentence at HMP Parc, and he said officers "met with considerable difficulties trying to interview him". It was not until July, 2024, that they were able to speak to the defendant, and he answered "no comment" to all questions asked. Ryan Thomas, aged 30, of Darren Las, Merthyr Vale, Merthyr, had previously pleaded guilty to two dwelling burglaries, a commercial burglary, and aggravated vehicle taking when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has previous convictions for 54 offences including domestic and commercial burglaries, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, handling stolen goods, and assaults occasioning actual bodily harm. ‌ In August, 2024, Thomas was sentenced to 18 months in prison after he and another man smashed their way into Maesycwmmer Stores in Caerphilly and stole thousands of pounds worth of tobacco and e-cigarettes, before leading police on a high-speed chase through Merthyr in a car fitted with false plates. Hywel Davies, for Thomas, said it had taken police a year to interview the defendant, and then nearly another year to charge him. He said the defendant had been putting his time in custody to good use by doing numerous courses, and he said his client had a young daughter who he "misses very very much" and with whom he hoped to regain contact upon his eventual release. Article continues below With one-quarter discounts for his guilty pleas, recorder Christopher Felstead sentenced Thomas to 31 months in prison. He will serve up to half that period in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. Thomas was banned from driving for a total of five years and three months, and must pass an extended test before he can get a licence.
