Food-shaped candles are latest dinner party trend

Times22-06-2025
If you see some half-melted strawberry tarts or unsavoury-looking fried chicken strewn across the table when you arrive at your next dinner party, don't be alarmed.
Your host has not forgotten to clear up their last meal. They are trying to impress you with the latest middle-class homeware trend: food-shaped candles.
Selfridges reports that food-shaped candles are now its fastest-selling table decoration and it has had to treble its range to meet demand.

The department store said candles in the form of a lemon, a fried egg and red grapes are among its top sellers. Candles that resemble a string of sausages, a slice of Gruyere, a baguette or a strawberry tart are also in strong demand. Prices range from £17 to £95.
Leading the unusual trend is Laila Gohar, an Egyptian artist known for transforming ordinary food into striking sculptural and interactive installations, such as a rope of braided mozzarella and a swan made of artichoke leaves.
One of Gohar's most popular food candles resembles, quite convincingly, a tin of biscuits. She also sells a set of strawberry candles, although none of her creations come cheap.
Her set of four fried chicken candles, thankfully unscented, will set buyers back £38, significantly more than a bucket of the real thing from KFC.

The striking creations have taken social media by storm and the hashtag #foodcandle has had tens of millions of views on TikTok.
Some enterprising food influencers have even crossed the line into making edible candles. Erin Dittmer's video on how to make a 'butter candle' has been viewed more nearly 14 million times.
This involves pouring melted butter and herbs into a paper cup containing an edible wick and then freezing it.
Once solid, the paper cup is torn away, the lump of butter placed in a hole torn out of a farmhouse loaf and the wick set alight. The butter slowly melts down the bread, creating a delicious if messy snack.

The latest additions to the Selfridges food candle range come from the Italian firm Introna, which has been making candles since 1840. These include a 'pink pudding' candle at £45, a banana candle at £18 and green apple candle at £18.
Selfridges said the strong interest in the candles is part of a wider trend for 'foodie decorations'. Last Christmas, for example, the store doubled its range of food and drink shaped baubles to meet demand.
Gregory Krum, buying manager at Selfridges, said: 'If you want to bring a fun talking point to your dinner table, now is the time to think beyond the traditional candle.'

Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet respond to breakup rumors as they reunite at Budapest coffee shop

KYLIE Jenner and Timothee Chalamet have responded to breakup rumors as they reunited at a Budapest coffee shop. It comes as the Hollywood power couple recently had fans speculating they could be going their separate ways after some "tell tale signs". 6 6 Kylie, 28, and Timothee, 29, who have been dating since 2023, put any rumors of a break-up to bed when they reunited after 45 days apart. The last time the couple were spotted together was on a yacht on July 5, in St Tropez, France. But now they are back together, after the youngest Kardashians star went to visit her man in Budapest, where he is currently filming Dune 3. Kylie and Timothee thrilled two employees at a local coffee shop, when they took a picture with them. Proving they were definitely still a couple, they posed happily with the star struck fans. Posting on the Instagram page for Budapest Baristas, one of the employees wrote: "Today Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet just walked in to our coffeeshop at Buda we were so in confusion, we could barley concentrate, but i think you can see on our face." The happy couple faced split rumours after Timothee was noticeably absent from Kylie's 28th birthday recently. She then posted on Instagram that she had been listening to break-up anthems, including Jeff Buckley's Lover, You Should've Come Over and Labi Saffre's Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying. Fans recognised she did this just before after her split with Travis Scott, and believed it was a sign that she has called time with Timothee. Sharing theories on Reddit, one fan wrote: 'Obviously could mean nothing, but I don't post break up songs casually myself. Hoping it's nothing though!!' Timothee Chalamet's sister Pauline throws new jab at Kylie Jenner as she slams 'wealth' in furious post This prompted another to write: 'Oof, the first sign of her breakup with Travis was random breakup songs. Could be nothing, she's still following him… 'Edit: yeah I interpret the song as a man messing up, but he still wants to be with his (ex?) lover. Definitely a yearning thing.' However, others thought it might not be a sign of a split, with one noting: 'Could actually be a suggestion by Timothee especially since a Jeff Buckley documentary just came out today.' 'But then she posted the 2nd breakup song from another artist (she actually posted it twice to tell us she's actually listening to it 😭)' noted another. "Not saying they did, but everything is calculated with Kylie. She knows what people are going to assume." "this song has been trending on tiktok for at least the last month," noted another. "i don't think it's anything more than that" But thanks to their Budapest selfie, fans will be pleased to know that Hollywood's young power couple, are very much together.
