Anne Burrell, Food Network star and host of 'Worst Cooks in America,' dies at 55
Anne Burrell, a Food Network star and frequent TODAY guest known as much for her platinum blond hair and signature wit as her talent in the kitchen, has died at age 55.
Burrell died Tuesday at her home at her home in Brooklyn, her team said in a statement.
'With her trademark spiky blonde hair and sparkling personality, Anne Burrell was the hugely popular and fan favorite host of Food Network's hit show, 'Worst Cooks in America,'' the statement said. 'Burrell was an industry veteran and passionate teacher who prided herself on her work in the culinary world.'
A cause of death was not provided.
Her family called Burrell 'a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend' in a statement, adding that her 'light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world.'
'Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal,' they said.
Burrell was a staple of the Food Network for two decades. A former teacher at the Institute of Culinary Education, she started her TV career by appearing as a sous chef on 'Iron Chef America' in 2005 and later launched her own show, the Emmy-nominated 'Secrets of a Restaurant Chef,' which aired from 2008 until 2012.
She appeared regularly on 'Chef Wanted,' 'Chopped,' 'Food Network Star' and others programs before she began hosting 'Worst Cooks in America' in 2010.
She recently competed on Food Network's 'House of Knives,' which premiered in March 2025.
'Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent — teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring,' says a Food Network spokesperson. 'Our thoughts are with Anne's family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss.'
Burrell also wrote two bestselling cookbooks, 'Cook Like a Rock Star' and 'Own Your Kitchen: Recipes to Inspire and Empower.'
She is survived by her husband Stuart Claxton, whom she married in 2021, and his son, Javier, along with her mother, Marlene, sister Jane and brother Ben.
Throughout her culinary journey, she often said, 'I feel so lucky to be able to share my true passion in life with others.'

Police officers responded to a call about 'an unconscious and unresponsive 55-year-old female' at 7:50 a.m. EST, PEOPLE revealed. Once Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived, they 'pronounced [Burrell] deceased on scene.' Burrell's family confirmed her unexpected passing in an emotional statement but did not reveal a cause of death. Burrell's body will be autopsied by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, who will make the official determination about cause of death. While cops did not name Burrell as the deceased in their statement, PEOPLE confirmed that the star's address matches the address that the police provided. Just four days before passing away at her NY home, Burrell published what would be her final post to her 673,000 Instagram followers. 'I ran into @greenladyofbrooklyn in my neighborhood today!!' she began. I'm not going to lie- I have been keeping an eye out for her. I may or may not have followed her down the street for a minute. Anne Burrell - a celebrity chef on Food Network - has died aged 55. Paramedics rushed to the popular chef's home in Brooklyn, New York City, where they reportedly found Anne unconscious. Doctors were unable to revive the woman, and declared her dead at the scene. Anne had an extensive career in the industry, alongside work on Food Network since Secrets of a Restaurant Chef debuted in 2008. Since then, she presented various other programmes on the channel, available in the UK as well as the US, including The Best Things I Ever Ate. But her big TV breakthrough came in 2010 when, aged 40, Anne and Beau MacMillan first started hosting the brutal Worst Cooks in America, which saw the professionals take contestants through a "culinary boot camp" on their journey to become better chefs. It has since had 28 seasons, many of which can be watched on Amazon Prime Video. Alongside this, other projects - mostly on Food Network - have included Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell, a series which saw the no-nonsense pro put chef candidates through the toughest job interview of their lives for a role at some of the best restaurants across the US. Over the years, the star has won programmes and contests in order to donate money to charity, including Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She won the fourth installment of the Chopped All-Stars tournament in 2015. In October 2021, Anne married Stuart Claxton after getting engaged the previous year. However, she leaves him behind following her death on Tuesday in Brooklyn. A cause of death has not yet been established.
