Southern University lands record-setting former LSU running back
Weeks before the start of the football season, Southern University has landed a record-setting running back that could improve its fortunes in the SWAC. Former LSU running back Trey Holly was spotted at the Jaguars' Tuesday practice, causing wide speculation that he had indeed joined the team. Southern University head coach Terrence Graves eventually confirmed his addition to the roster.
'He got enrolled in school, so we're going to give him an opportunity to work out here,' Graves said. 'He paid his way, he got admitted in school, and we're going to give him an opportunity to be a part of this program.'
Landing Holly, a former four-star recruit, is a huge addition to a Jaguars team that is looking to reclaim their spot atop the SWAC West. Holly finished his career in high school as one of the most accomplished players in the history of Louisiana football.
Over five seasons, starting in eighth grade, he amassed 10,532 rushing yards, shattering the state's all-time record. He totaled 160 touchdowns, with 146 coming on the ground. In his senior year, he ran for 2,694 yards and 38 touchdowns, guiding Union Parish to the LHSAA Division III title game. Across his career, he recorded 51 games with 100+ rushing yards and averaged an impressive 159.4 yards per game. His stellar high school career earned him the distinction as the fourth-best running back in the nation.
Holly played three games for LSU in 2023, recording 110 rushing yards and a touchdown. His time was cut short after a February 2024 arrest led to suspension. While the attempted second-degree murder charge was dropped, he still faces weapons-related charges.
Holley could be a great addition to the Jaguars' offense after the team lost former star RB Kendric Rhymes, who entered the transfer portal at the end of the season and committed to Tennessee State University. It will be interesting to see where Holley lands on the Jaguars' depth chart this fall.

DT Khalen Saunders reacts to being traded from Saints to Jaguars
Once the news was out, DT Khalen Saunders reacted to being traded from the Saints to the Jaguars. News broke on Sunday night that the Jacksonville Jaguars were making a trade with the New Orleans Saints for veteran defensive tackle Khalen Saunders. It was later reported that the Jaguars were trading away offensive lineman Luke Fortner to complete the deal. Not long after that report came out, Saunders took to X to share his initial reaction to the move. The addition of Saunders provides the Jaguars' defensive tackle depth with a much-needed boost. This was a position that was an unknown entering the offseason; however, no significant moves were made during free agency or the NFL draft to bolster that unit. Adding to the uncertainty this summer has been the injuries that Arik Armstead and Maason Smith have been working through, which have sidelined both players for all of training camp. Saunders is an experienced player, having appeared in 68 games and made 32 starts in his NFL career. He also won two Super Bowls with Kansas City before joining the Saints. At 6-0 - 324 pounds, Saunders brings an added run-stuffing presence to the Jaguars' defensive line.

Jets' rookie tight end could play a major role
The Jets used their second-round selection of this past draft on tight end Mason Taylor out of LSU. And while he is just a rookie looking to cement his name in the league, he could play a major role for this Jets team. Mason Taylor has succeeded as a pass catcher before At LSU, Taylor broke records and was an absolute stud at the tight end position. He seemed to always be open, and the Tigers used him heavily as a receiver. In his final collegiate season, the Jets' tight end put up 546 yards and two touchdowns on 55 receptions. He is seen as the most productive tight end ever at LSU. The Jets will need Taylor this upcoming season, as behind him at the tight end position, they do not have a lot of depth. He is clearly their top guy and will provide big relief for the Jets' offense. Jets need a safety blanket for Justin Fields The Jets do not have many big targets for their offense this season, so having a safety net on in the passing game will be important. This is what Taylor can bring to the field. The Jets can run different play actions and different standard passes, all while having Taylor run some form of block and releases, giving new QB Justin Fields a guy to whom he could check down if nothing is open. He is working to become a complete tight end, so once he develops his run blocking more, the play-action game could open up. Taylor can be a big threat in the passing game, and they will use him in many ways other than just as a safety blanket. This season, we might see a breakout right away for the Jets' tight end. He has been having a strong camp and could bring that to the game on Sundays.
