Gokongwei-led budget carrier Cebu Pacific has entered into a strategic partnership with Saudi flag carrier Saudia's low-cost airline flyadeal.
At a ceremony in Parañaque City on Wednesday, Cebu Pacific CEO Mike Szucs and flyadeal CEO Steven Greenway signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for both airlines to 'explore joint strategic commercial initiatives.'
The initial phase of the MOU covers a wet-lease arrangement between Cebu Pacific and flyadeal, in which the Saudi Arabian low-cost carrier will lease two aircraft —Airbus A320– from the Philippine budget carrier for the summer peak flying season in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia next month.
The partnership would also involve joint commercial cooperation and support in maintenance and engineering, according to Szucs.
Consequently, Cebu Pacific is also eyeing wet-leasing flyadeal's A320 aircraft to augment its fleet during the busy winter period in Southeast Asia towards the end of the year.
'With Cebu Pacific's growing fleet, we seek to maximize the potential of our increased capacity through all months of the year. The utilization of our capacity by other carriers during our lean season is a way of achieving that,' said Szucs.
'This partnership with flyadeal highlights Cebu Pacific's growing capability to support international carriers through wet leasing and broader operational collaboration. It diversifies our revenue streams and further expands Cebu Pacific's presence beyond the Asia Pacific region,' he added.
Greenway said the agreement ''marks flyadeal's first ever strategic airline partnership.'
'This was the starting point for wide-ranging commercial discussions covering a broad range of areas, including more immediate needs of wet-leasing aircraft for flyadeal's busy upcoming summer season. It's a win-win situation all around to bring in Cebu Pacific aircraft during our peak period and vice versa for Mike and his team to explore taking our aircraft for their winter peak later this year,'' he said. — VBL, GMA Integrated News

With AI and more shade, Saudi set for a searing hajj

Photo by Fadel Senna/ AFP/File photo RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - With artificial intelligence, more shade and misting machines, Saudi authorities are preparing to welcome more than a million hajj pilgrims amid punishing summer heat that has a deadly history in the holy city of Mecca. Saudi Arabia's hajj minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah told AFP on Thursday that efforts to mitigate the searing desert heat remained a top focus among authorities and organisers ahead of this year's pilgrimage. "One of the big challenges that we always face is the increasing temperature across the different years and this is an issue that we give top priority," he told AFP during an exclusive interview in Riyadh. The issue is all the more pressing as officials work to prevent a repeat of last year's hajj, which saw more than 1,300 pilgrims die as temperatures reached 51.8 degrees Celsius (125.24 degrees Fahrenheit). This year, Rabiah said authorities have mobilised more than 40 government agencies and 250,000 officials and doubled their efforts to mitigate heat-related risks. Shaded areas have been expanded by 50,000 square metres (12 acres), thousands more medics will be on hand, and more than 400 cooling units will be deployed for the duration of the hajj, he added. Such efforts build on the work of previous years that have seen renovations to areas around the Grand Mosque and asphalt areas covered with a special layer to help reduce surface temperatures. "These new changes will definitely ensure the safety and the better experience of pilgrims when they perform their hajj," said Rabiah. He said this week that more than a million people from across the globe had already arrived in Saudi Arabia for the hajj, with more still pouring in. In 2024, 1.8 million pilgrims gathered in Mecca during the pilgrimage. Permit crackdown The latest artificial intelligence software will help monitor the deluge of information and footage, including video from a new fleet of drones, from across Mecca. "We use advanced AI technologies to do this monitoring and get fast feedback," the minister said. Crowd management has proved perilous in the past, notably in 2015 when a stampede caused about 2,300 deaths. Along with expanding infrastructure and deploying more personnel, Saudi officials have been cracking down to prevent pilgrims without the right paperwork from entering Mecca. Officials say more than 80 percent of the deaths during last year's hajj were among pilgrims who lacked official permits, which prevented them from accessing services including air-conditioned tents. Hajj permits are allocated to countries on a quota system and distributed to individuals by lottery. But even for those who can obtain them, the steep costs spur many to attempt the hajj without a permit -- though they risk arrest and deportation if caught. To head off a flood of illicit pilgrims entering Mecca, authorities have launched raids, mounted a widespread media campaign and increased fines for those found violating the rules, which includes a potential 10-year ban from the kingdom. "Therefore, having a permit is very crucial, very important for the safety of all," said Rabiah. "We count on all Muslims to come only with permits and also we count on all countries to support us to ensure that only those with permits come to hajj." This year's pilgrimage will begin on June 4 and take place over at least four days, mostly outdoors. The hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and must be undertaken at least once by all Muslims who are able to do so. For the past several years the mainly outdoor rituals have fallen during the sweltering Saudi summer. "The hajj pilgrimage is a sacred journey that the leadership of the kingdom and the whole people of the kingdom take it seriously," the minister told AFP. "They see it as a duty to work hard to ensure the spiritual fulfilment and safety of pilgrims." — Agence France-Presse

BPI working toward blue bond issuance

Ayala-led Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) said Thursday it is looking to offer blue bonds, issuances designed to finance marine and ocean-based projects, with the lender seeking to hit P1 trillion worth of sustainability-linked loans by 2026. According to BPI chief finance officer and chief sustainability officer Eric Luchangco, the bank is now working on a blue bond framework which will specify that the proceeds will go to eligible uses. "Our goal is to finalize that framework within the year… I believe we'll be able to finalize the framework within the year. The timing of the issuance will be dependent on the funding requirement so I cannot specify at this time," he told reporters in Makati City. Blue finance will cover sustainable water management, sustainable management of waste and wastewater; sustainable shipping; marine transportation, and port logistics; marine renewable energy; sustainable fisheries; sustainable tourism services; and solid waste management, among others. Luchangco said the company aims to hit P1 trillion worth of sustainability-linked loans by 2026, a target the bank set in 2021. The bank ended the first quarter with close to P900 billion worth of such loans, equivalent to 39.13% of the P2.3 trillion total loan book during the period. "If it were to trend at its current trend, we would be able to achieve that objective, that P1-trillion objective. Of course, you know, we do have to see that pan out over the next year and a half, but I think we're confident that we remain committed in this journey and therefore we will be able to achieve this goal," he said. Aside from the P1-trillion target, Luchangco said BPI is also aiming to have half of its total loan book be sustainability linked by the end of 2026. "Our goal is that at least 50% of our book should be sustainability linked. P900 billion out of P2.3 trillion is not 50%, so there's still a bit of a way to go from that perspective that at least 50% should be sustainability linked, but the goal is that by the end of 2026, that's what we're shooting for. I'm not sure we're gonna get there, but that continues to be our goal," Luchangco said. "I think we'll achieve the P1 trillion earlier than expected. The 50% of total loan book, you know, between those two goals, I think that one will be the more challenging to achieve because the non-sustainability-linked side is also growing well," he added. BPI said its sustainable development finance (SDF) portfolio has so far covered 485 projects, including 177 in energy efficiency, 145 in renewable energy, 80 in climate resilience, 74 in sustainable agriculture, and six in sustainable water. The bank ended 2024 with a P958-billion sustainable development goal (SDG) portfolio—P409 billion on industry, innovation, and infrastructure; P192 billion to zero hunger; P128 billion to affordable and clean energy; P105 billion to decent work and economic growth; P58 billion to sustainable cities and communities; and P66 billion to others. Luchangco said BPI is also set to increase the size of its one-and-a-half-year peso-denominated Supporting Inclusion, Nature, and Growth (BPI SINAG) bonds, citing strong demand. "I think we haven't publicly disclosed the size, but it will definitely be larger than the initial disclosed offer which I believe was P5 billion, so I think the demand for this bond has been very, very strong. I'm happy to say that it's been very, very strong," he said. The issuance comprises the first tranche of a P200-billion bond and commercial paper program, carrying an interest rate of 5.85% per annum paid quarterly. The offer period was initially scheduled to close on May 30, but was cut short to May 26. Listing with the Philippine Dealing and Exchange Corp. will push through as scheduled on June 10, 2025. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Hotel101 Global to develop 10,000 rooms in Saudi Arabia

Hotel101 Global Pte. Ltd., the Singapore-headquartered subsidiary of DoubleDragon Corp., has partnered with the Horizon Group to develop up to 10,000 rooms in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, expected to translate to a $2.5-billion or P137.5-billion project value. Under the partnership, the two parties have identified an initial five locations, with the first being in Medina, followed by Riyadh, Jeddah, Abha, and Alula, with an average of 500 rooms per site. This comes as Hotel101 adopted a global "one room" hotel chain, offering identical, standardized hotel rooms. It also has an asset-light "condotel" business model, designed to scale efficiently while maximizing value for unit owners and guests. "We see tremendous opportunities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia given the high growth in tourism both domestic and international. We believe Saudi Arabia will be one of the most exciting markets for Hotel101 globally," Hotel101 chief executive officer Hannah Yulo-Luccini said in an emailed statement. "With Hotel101's rapid-build model and Horizon's local know-how, we will add 10,000 quality, affordable rooms across the Kingdom—supporting Vision 2030, creating Saudi jobs, and expanding options for pilgrims, tourists, and business travelers alike," Horizon Group chief executive officer Abdulrahman Sharbatly said. Saudi Arabia targets to reach 150 million tourists by 2030, after welcoming 27 million international tourists and 79 million domestic tourists in 2030, reaching a 100-million visitor mark. "We are inspired by the leaders of Saudi Arabia and their sheer determination and will power to make things happen, as such, we are confident in the plans they have laid out for the region and we believe the Hotel101 concept will be able to make a significant contribution in terms of room keys to complement the 2030 Vision for the Kingdom, and to form part of our global vision of 1 million Hotel 101 rooms worldwide," Hotel101 Global founder Edgar "Injap" Sia II said. Hotel101 officially filed its F-4 Registration Statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on February 1 (Philippine time), taking a key step toward its $2.3-billion Nasdaq listing. The firm entered a definitive merger agreement with JVSPAC Acquisition Corp. in April 2024, positioning DoubleDragon to become the first Filipino company with a subsidiary listed on Nasdaq. Hotel101's first three overseas projects are located in Niseko Hokkaido, Japan; Madrid, Spain; and Los Angeles, California, in the United States, which are set to jumpstart its expansion to other areas as it targets to accumulate a portfolio of 1 million rooms in 101 countries before 2050. It also seeks to expand in areas such as the United Kingdom (UK), the United Arab Emirates (UAE), India, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Mexico, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Turkey, Italy, Germany, France, and China. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
