A Britney Spears biopic is in the works – and it's based on this book

Independent03-04-2025
Two years on from her bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me, it's been confirmed that a Britney Spears biopic is in the works. Directed by Wicked 's Jon M. Chu, the movie is the result of a dramatic bidding war, with Universal Pictures winning the rights to produce the adaptation.
The result of a reported £12.3 million book deal, the memoir detailed the 43-year-old pop star's battles with mental illness and 13-year conservatorship. Revealing intimate details about her life in the spotlight, it touched on her abortion while dating Justin Timberlake, a grueling Las Vegas residency and her exploitation in the music industry.
An official release date hasn't yet been set for the film, but rumours are already rife about who could potentially play the singer. Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Sydney Sweeney have all been thrown in the mix, with Chu writing on X last week that the film isn't yet in the casting process. "I have not had one conversation about casting this movie yet,' he said.
The tell-all memoir was critically acclaimed for its candid account of her rise to fame, but Spears admitted some parts were too painful to retell. As such, Michelle Williams narrated the audio version of the memoir.
While details remain thin on the ground for the biopic, the movie will likely follow a similar structure to the book, including her struggle to end a 13-year court-ordered conservatorship.
Chu has told Entertainment Tonight that 'she's going to be very involved.' So, if you're as excited as us, why not dive into the singer's memoir for the very first time? Here's where to read it, plus how to listen to Williams' audio adaptation.
Britney Spears's memoir became an instant bestseller upon its release in 2023. An empowering rebuke of the music industry, public perceptions of her and her family's role in the conservatorship, The Woman in Me recounts Spears's journey to stardom and attempts to silence her.
The book lifts the lid on what really happened in the run-up and aftermath of her highly publicised breakdown and hospitalisation in 2008. Following a series of public incidents, the singer was forced into a conservatorship that gave her father, Jamie Spears, control over her personal and financial affairs for nearly 14 years. A judge terminated the conservatorship in November 2021, and the singer is now estranged from her family.
The pop star also touches on her relationship with singer Justin Timberlake. The famous pair dated in their late teens and early Twenties, with Spears revealing in the book that she became pregnant with Timberlake's baby but had an abortion. She alleges in the memoir that he told her to have an abortion and cheated on her with another celebrity.
As well as writing candidly about her private life, she recounts some of her most iconic performances, such as 'I'm a Slave 4 U' at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards (that moment where she held a yellow Burmese python over her shoulders).
With the movie based on the memoir, the book and Michelle Williams' audio adaptation (99p, Amazon.co.uk) give us a flavour of what to expect.

Britney Spears' ex Kevin Federline to reveal all in 'extremely intimate' book

Almost two years ago Britney Spears shocked the world with her tell-all memoir – now her ex-husband Kevin Federline is telling his story. Titled You Thought You Knew, he promised this will be an 'extremely intimate and transparent' look at his life. While it's unknown how much the 47-year-old star will be able to share of his life with Britney, 43, he revealed that 'crushing heartbreak' will feature. The dancer, who was with the pop icon between 2004 and 2007, will drop his book three days before the second anniversary of The Woman In Me. 'I achieved my biggest dreams, dealt with crushing heartbreak, and endured constant ridicule, all while becoming the father my children needed as they experienced nonstop emotional turbulence,' Kevin said. 'If you've ever had questions, you'll find answers here.' Set for release on October 21, 2025, through a new audio imprint Listenin, the memoir will be one of the platform's first offerings. Billed as a 'deeply personal and emotionally grounded' account of his life, it's anticipated that he will open up about co-parenting with the Circus hitmaker. The former couple share sons Sean Preston, 19, and Jayden James, 18, who Britney reunited with in June. Jayden and Sean both moved in with their father in Hawaii in 2023 and have slowly been repairing their relationship with their mum ever since, including spending an emotional Christmas together last year. 'I haven't seen my boys in 2 years!!! Tears of joy and literally in shock everyday… koo koo crazy so in love and blessed!!!' she praised at the time. Jaren Hayman, the founder of Barracuda Baby Productions, was thrilled to have worked with Kevin on the project. Jaren said: 'We're proud to have Kevin as the first of our three books launching with Listenin. 'He spent two years in every tabloid and two decades navigating a volatile, ever-changing reality — choosing silence to protect his kids. That silence left scars. I am excited for the world to get to meet the real Kevin Federline.' The October release date may raise some eyebrows in Britney's dedicated fanbase as it mirrors when she released her own bombshell memoir. Britney, who is one of the best-selling pop stars of all time, described her book as a 'labour of love' after being released from her 13-year conservatorship. The chart-topping star told People at the time: 'Reliving everything has been exciting, heart-wrenching, and emotional, to say the least. For those reasons, I will only be reading a small part of my audiobook.' It left no stone unturned with revelations about her time in the spotlight, including her infamous romance with Justin Timberlake from 1999 to 2002. More Trending She accused him of pressuring her into having an abortion, cheating on her 'multiple' times, and intentionally painting her as the villain in the wake of their high-profile break-up. Who could forget that Cry Me A River music video with a suspiciously blonde love interest who brutally breaks his heart? Justin, 43, then hit back at his ex while performing shortly after the memoir was released, saying into the mic between songs, 'I'd like to apologise to…absolutely nobody!' Got a story?
