HC orders return of seized sarees to Titan store

Time of India2 days ago
Hyderabad: Justice T Madhavi Devi of the Telangana high court has recently ordered the release of material seized from Titan company's Taneira store in Banjara Hills.
In Aug 2019, the legal metrology department had confiscated 10 sarees and 5 lehengas, alleging violations of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, and later issued a notice seeking a compounding fee.
Challenging the action, Titan argued that the seizure was illegal. The court agreed, noting that the seized garments were sold in loose form, allowing customers to see, touch, try, and choose the products, placing them outside the scope of 'pre-packaged commodities' under the rules. As per the govt of India's advisories, such sales do not require detailed labelling.

Even if the rules applied, the court observed that Titan's labels already carried essential details, including product length, make, brand, material, manufacturer name (Taneira Company Limited), and an email contact.
Citing these findings, the court ruled the seizure unsustainable and ordered the return of the goods to Titan.

On the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan, the family was mourning over the loss of their son. His uncle, Darshan Singh, said, 'Our government should take strict steps to deal with terrorists… the army should be given a free hand to combat terrorists… our young bravehearts are getting martyred.' And Harminder's friend Gurminder Singh, said, 'He used to inspire others to work towards fitness and get enrolled in army… he was an inspiration to all of us… we are proud of his bravery but at the same time we are in grief over losing him.' Harminder will be cremated on Sunday morning in Badinpur, with full military honours. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, in a heartfelt post on X, solemnly said: 'In an encounter with terrorists in Kulgam… the tragic news was received of the martyrdom of soldier Pritpal Singh… and Sepoy Harminder Singh from the village of Badinpur… We express our heartfelt condolences to the families. We salute the spirit and bravery of the soldiers… an ex-gratia of ₹1 crore each will be provided to the families.' The Chief Minister added, 'Their dedication and bravery will always be remembered,' and reaffirmed Punjab's unwavering support for the bereaved in this time of grief. Dialling destiny: RCB captain Rajat Patidar's old SIM lands with Chhattisgarh youth; answers calls from Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers

A technical error led to cricketer Rajat Patidar's mobile number being reassigned to Manish Bisi in Chhattisgarh. Bisi received calls from cricket stars like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who mistook him for Patidar. The mix-up occurred because the number was inactive for six months before being re-allotted. RAIPUR: A technical glitch resulted in international cricketer Rajat Patidar 's mobile number being allotted to a youth in Gariaband district, leading to a flurry of unexpected calls from cricket stars including Virat Kohli , Yash Dayal, and AB de Villiers . The incident came to light when Manish Bisi, 21, a resident of Madagaon village, began receiving calls from the players. The number, inactive for nearly six months, was re-allotted to Manish in a routine process, said Gariaband SP Nikhil Rakhecha. 'It was a WhatsApp number and had probably not been in use for the last six months. As per company rules, a number that remains unused for over six months is allotted to other customers, which might have led to the allotment to the Devbhog youth. We have now returned the number to cricketer Rajat Patidar,' the SP said. Manish, a self-proclaimed Virat Kohli fan, bought the new SIM from a Devbhog mobile shop in late June. A week later, his friend Khemraj helped him set up WhatsApp, where the profile picture automatically displayed Patidar's photo — which they initially thought was a glitch. Soon, calls started pouring in from numbers claiming to be Kohli, AB de Villiers, and other players, all addressing him as 'Rajat.' Thinking it was a prank, the youths chatted with the callers for about 15 days. The matter escalated when Patidar, unable to access his old number, contacted the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell, which in turn reached out to Gariaband police. A police team visited the village and recovered the SIM, which has since been sent to Patidar. The youths, both avid cricket fans, called the episode unforgettable and expressed hope that Patidar would meet them someday. Patidar plays for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket and captains Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
