Celtic face battle to land Sondre Ørjasæter with PSV frontrunners

Glasgow Times21-06-2025
The Sarpsborg winger has been of interest to the Hoops since January, but a move hasn't materialised.
It was suggested back then that £7 million would secure his services.
However, it is now claimed that the 21-year-old has an increased asking price and is still on Celtic's radar.
French club Lille are also interested.
According to TV Sport 2 in Norway, Dutch side PSV are leading the race for the winger.
Ørjasæter told the Norwegian outlet: "Now I feel ready to take the step, while I am doing well here with full focus on Sarpsborg.
"A transfer is not something I think about very much.
"I think that if it happens, it happens.
"It's not like I'll be depressed if there's no transition."

Nobel Mendy Rangers transfer 'confirmed' by Real Betis chief as major hint dropped on fellow Ibrox 'target'

Gers' summer spree of spending is set to continue with the capture of the left-sided defender Real Betis have confirmed that defender Nobel Mendy is close to leaving the club - with Rangers in pole position to land the youngster. ‌ ‌ The left-sided defender has also been linked to fellow La Liga side Rayo Vallecano but reports in Spain claim that the Senegalese player has his heart set on joining Rangers. ‌ And Betis director Manu Fajardo has confirmed that they have received two offers from 'major' clubs and that a deal to sell Mendy could be finalised in a matter of hours. Speaking at a press conference, he said: "As of today, we have two formal offers from two major clubs. "The player's willingness will be important. We hope to finalise the deal in the next few hours." Meanwhile, FC Volendam's transfer chief says that Rangers-linked Xavier Mbuyamba has expressed a desire to move on before the end of the window. The Dutch centre back - who was once tipped as the next Virgil van Dijk - is into the final year of his contract with the Eredivisie club. ‌ Mbuyamba was touted as a potential target for Old Firm rivals Celtic in 2023 but is now said to be on Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell's radar across the city in Glasgow. And Volendam have prepared for the player's exit by bringing in Ajax defender Nick Verschuren on loan. Technical director Patrick Busby said: "Nick has been on our wish list for a long time to strengthen our defensive centre. ‌ "We're therefore pleased to have been able to loan him from Ajax for this season. Mbuyamba still wants to leave, and we are strongly considering his departure. With Verschuren, we anticipated filling that position." Gianluigi Donnarumma open to move away from PSG amid reported Man Utd interest

Gianluigi Donnarumma is open to a move away from Paris St Germain this summer, the PA news agency understands (Mike Egerton/PA) This article is brought to you by our exclusive subscriber partnership with our sister title USA Today, and has been written by our American colleagues. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. Gianluigi Donnarumma is open to a move away from Paris St Germain this summer but will not be pushed out by the French club, the PA news agency understands. The Italian goalkeeper has been left out of PSG's squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup match against Tottenham, and it is understood he will now leave Paris this summer if the right move opens up. Manchester United have been linked in some reports with an interest in the 26-year-old, who is out of contract next summer. However, it is understood that up to this point there has been no contact from United to PSG regarding Donnarumma. Lucas Chevalier's arrival at PSG has been followed by Donnarumma being left out of their Super Cup squad (Joe Giddens/PA) The European champions completed the signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille over the weekend, and Donnarumma has now been left out for the game against Spurs in Udine. Donnarumma was part of the Italy squad which won Euro 2020 by beating England in the final on penalties, and is still regarded as one of the world's top goalkeepers. He made over 200 appearances for AC Milan before joining PSG in 2021. He has won four Ligue 1 titles with the Parisiens and was part of the team which thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 to win last season's Champions League title.

I was determined to make instant impact, says new Celtic star Benjamin Nygren

The summer signing from Nordsjaelland grabbed his first goal for the club when he swept home Kieran Tierney's low cross to put Celtic in front at Aberdeen on Sunday. The 24-year-old hit the bar on his debut against St Mirren the previous weekend after being preferred to the likes of club record signing Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo in Brendan Rodgers' starting line-up. After hitting 15 goals in the Danish top flight last season and scoring twice in his first four internationals, Nygren was intent on making his mark early. 🕺#ABECEL | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) August 10, 2025 'I didn't come here to not play,' Nygren said. 'So of course I came here to try to come in fast and also show my abilities in training and training games. So of course I came here to help the team win games.' Nygren also set up Reo Hatate's goal in a 2-0 William Hill Premiership win over the Dons, although he was quick to play down his role in the Japanese midfielder's wonderful finish. However, he could have had a special assist moments later when he played a deft ball over the top which Daizen Maeda latched on to before losing his footing as he ran towards goal. Nygren knows there is a demand to contribute when he gets game time for Celtic, given the strength in depth in Rodgers' midfield. 'It would be weird if there were only 11 good players in such a big team as Celtic. I think we have, I don't know how many, 25-30 good players in Celtic, but only 11 can start the game. 'It's a very long season and now we've only played our two first games, so we will need a lot of players and a lot of good quality players. I think we have that.' Benjamin Nygren delivers the breakthrough with his first goal for the Bhoys ⚽💚#ABECEL | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) August 10, 2025 Nygren's goal and his near miss against St Mirren both came from similar moves, with the Swede arriving on to a low ball from the left. 'That's also why I scored many goals last season, because I can run a lot,' he said. 'I always come a little bit from behind.' Nygren started in central midfield and finished the game on the wing and is happy to show his versatility. 'I think it's preferably like I started the game, but I'm a player that has played a lot of positions, so for me I don't think too much of the positions, it's football,' he said. 'You need football intelligence. It's all football.'
