Shohei hits 40th homer, Blake Snell fans 10 as Dodgers rout Blue Jays

Reuters3 days ago
August 10 - Blake Snell struck out 10 over five shutout innings and Shohei Ohtani blasted his 40th home run of the season to boost the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 9-1 win over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday evening.
Max Muncy also homered and singled, and Andy Pages contributed two hits and two RBIs for Los Angeles, which will try for a three-game sweep of the American League East leaders on Sunday.
Snell (2-1) allowed three hits and walked three in his second game back following a four-month absence with an injury to his throwing shoulder.
After the two-time Cy Young Award winner was lifted after 90 pitches, Brock Stewart, Jack Dreyer and Alexis Diaz combined to allow one run over the final four innings.
Ernie Clement spoiled the shutout with a solo homer in the eighth for the Blue Jays, who had won three in a row heading into the series.
Toronto right-hander Chris Bassitt (11-6) allowed three runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings, with two strikeouts and two walks.
Freddie Freeman walked to lead off the fourth and Muncy went the other way with a sinker, clearing the fence in the left-field corner for a two-run homer and a 2-0 lead.
Ohtani blasted his home run to straightaway center with one out in the fifth to stretch it to 3-0.
The Dodgers scored six runs in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs in the sixth before Dalton Rushing lined a two-run single up the middle for a 5-0 lead.
After an intentional walk to Ohtani, Mookie Betts lined a single off the glove of Toronto third baseman Buddy Kennedy, scoring two more runs for a 7-0 lead. Pages then came up with the bases full and two outs in the inning and doubled down the third-base line to make it 9-0.
Snell struck out the first two batters of the game on six pitches and needed just nine pitches to retire the side in order.
Kennedy hit a ground-rule double into the stands in the left-field corner to lead off the third and Davis Schneider walked with one out, but Snell struck out two batters in the inning to help him escape the jam.
Snell walked two batters in the fourth, but struck out two more to strand both.

Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart (shoulder) placed on 15-day IL

August 13 - Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart is being placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, manager Dave Roberts told reporters Tuesday. Roberts said he believes that the team caught this situation early. Stewart last appeared in a game on Aug. 9 vs. Toronto, tossing a scoreless inning. He'll undergo testing on Wednesday, per Roberts. Stewart, who was drafted by the Dodgers in 2014, returned to the organization as a trade-deadline acquisition from the Minnesota Twins. He's made four appearances for the Dodgers, allowing two earned runs over 3 2/3 innings. The right-handed pitcher has posted a 2.63 ERA over a career-high 37.2 innings this season while making a career-high 43 appearances, 15 more than he's made in any prior season. The Athletic reported that RHP Edgardo Henriquez (1.59 ERA over 5.2 career major-league innings) has joined the Dodgers in Anaheim to take Stewart's roster spot for Wednesday's cross-city matchup with the Angels. -Field Level Media

Rams have 'no update' on ailing QB Matthew Stafford

August 13 - Tuesday marked another day on the sidelines for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, whose back problem continued to keep him out of duty at training camp. Stafford, 37, was expected to participate in his first training camp practice on Monday but came out in street clothes. It was no different Tuesday, as Jimmy Garoppolo worked with the first team again and Stafford stayed out of the mix. "No, no update on Matthew," assistant head coach and passing game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant said, per Pro Football Talk, "but what I will tell you is it's very tough for not only him and for the organization. I would say is that he's trying his best." Pleasant went on to say that the Rams were "Matthew's team" but that he was pleased with how the offensive coaching staff was "catering an offense" toward Garoppolo in recent days. The developments create further uncertainty about Stafford's readiness to play in Week 1. Garoppolo is taking the majority of first-team reps as the Rams prepare to open the regular season Sept. 7 against the visiting Houston Texans. Stafford led the Rams to a 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI and is entering his 17th NFL season. A concussion and spinal cord contusion limited him to nine games in 2022, but he only sat out two games in 2023 and one last year. --Field Level Media

Legendary Monica Seles reveals she's battling myasthenia gravis

August 13 - Nine-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles is battling a new challenge: a neuromuscular autoimmune disease called myasthenia gravis. The 51-year-old Seles is going public about the condition she was diagnosed with three years ago. It causes muscle weakness in the arms and legs and bouts of double vision among other symptoms. Seles was noticing odd changes around five years ago and it eventually became apparent to her that something major was wrong. "I would be playing (tennis) with some kids or family members, and I would miss a ball," Seles said, according to The Guardian. "I was like, 'Yeah, I see two balls.' These are obviously symptoms that you can't ignore. "And, for me, this is when this journey started. And it took me quite some time to really absorb it, speak openly about it, because it's a difficult one. It affects my day-to-day life quite a lot." There currently is no cure for the disease. Seles, of course, had a different hurdle earlier in life as she was stabbed with a knife by a fan during a 1993 match in Hamburg, Germany. Seles was 19 at the time and would be away from the sport for 27 months due to both physical and mental anguish. Seles won eight Grand Slam titles prior to the stabbing and reached the finals of all four majors in 1992, winning three of them. She won the Australian Open for the third straight time months before the stabbing. After she returned, Seles won just one Grand Slam title -- the 1996 Australian Open. "I had to, in tennis terms, I guess, reset -- hard reset -- a few times," Seles said. "I call my first hard reset when I came to the U.S. as a young 13-year-old (from Yugoslavia). Didn't speak the language; left my family. It's a very tough time. "Then, obviously, becoming a great player, it's a reset, too, because the fame, money, the attention, changes (everything), and it's hard as a 16-year-old to deal with all that. Then obviously my stabbing -- I had to do a huge reset." Decades later, Seles is now adjusting to a "new normal" and looking to move forward with the next version of herself. "Really, being diagnosed with myasthenia gravis: another reset," Seles said. "But one thing, as I tell kids that I mentor: 'You've got to always adjust. That ball is bouncing, and you've just got to adjust. And that's what I'm doing now." Seles decided to reveal her condition and use her platform to help educate people about the little-known disease. "My MG journey over the past 5 years has not been an easy one," Seles said in a statement through argenx, a company partnering with Seles to raise awareness at the upcoming U.S. Open. "I felt isolated and defeated as many of the activities I enjoyed were no longer physically possible for me. I've since realized that by sharing my story, I can raise awareness of this disease, empower patients to advocate for themselves and help them connect with the MG community for support." Seles retired from professional tennis in 2008 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame one year later. She won 53 tournaments and spent 178 weeks at No. 1, sixth-most all-time among female players. --Field Level Media
