Rams have 'no update' on ailing QB Matthew Stafford
Stafford, 37, was expected to participate in his first training camp practice on Monday but came out in street clothes. It was no different Tuesday, as Jimmy Garoppolo worked with the first team again and Stafford stayed out of the mix.
"No, no update on Matthew," assistant head coach and passing game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant said, per Pro Football Talk, "but what I will tell you is it's very tough for not only him and for the organization. I would say is that he's trying his best."
Pleasant went on to say that the Rams were "Matthew's team" but that he was pleased with how the offensive coaching staff was "catering an offense" toward Garoppolo in recent days.
The developments create further uncertainty about Stafford's readiness to play in Week 1. Garoppolo is taking the majority of first-team reps as the Rams prepare to open the regular season Sept. 7 against the visiting Houston Texans.
Stafford led the Rams to a 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI and is entering his 17th NFL season. A concussion and spinal cord contusion limited him to nine games in 2022, but he only sat out two games in 2023 and one last year.

Wayne Rooney: Criticism from Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady ‘very unfair'
Wayne Rooney claims Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady's criticism of him during his spell as the club's manager was 'very unfair'. Rooney, sacked by Birmingham in January 2024 after less than three months in charge, said he was 'really disappointed with the comment' on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show. NFL great Brady, who became a minority shareholder at Birmingham in August 2023, said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic' during a documentary after visiting Blues' training ground the following November. Former England captain Rooney said he was 'really disappointed' at the seven-time Super Bowl winner's criticism. Speaking via his new show on the BBC, the ex-Everton and Manchester United striker said: 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well. 'But what he does understand is – he's a hard worker – we know that.' Rooney added: 'Football is not NFL – NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.' Birmingham were bought out by American consortium Knighthead Capital Management in the summer of 2023 and Brady became a shareholder two months later. Rooney was sacked following 15 matches after Blues had slipped to 20th in the Sky Bet Championship and the club were relegated at the end of the 2023-24 season. Under current boss Chris Davies, Birmingham bounced straight back to the second tier as League One champions last season with an English Football League record points tally of 111.

Aston Villa given fitness boost for key man ahead of Premier League opener against Newcastle
Aston Villa are increasingly hopeful that Morgan Rogers will be fit for Saturday's Premier League opener against Newcastle. The forward, a contender for the PFA Young Player of the Year award, damaged his ankle in a pre-season friendly against Roma on August 6 and did not feature in the preparation games against Marseille and Villarreal. But Rogers has been involved in training this week and confidence is growing that he will be ready for the clash with Eddie Howe 's team at Villa Park. Rogers, 23, was one of the breakout stars of the last Premier League campaign, hitting double figures for goals and assists in all competitions, and breaking into the senior England squad. Aston Villa are hopeful Morgan Rogers will be fit for Saturday's Premier League opener against Newcastle He signed a new deal with Villa less than a year ago but his progress has been so rapid that the club are expected to offer him improved terms in the coming weeks, as first revealed by Daily Mail Sport on July 21. Villa have been relatively quiet in the market this summer, though they remain in talks to sell homegrown midfielder Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle for about £40million, after Villa brought in Evann Guessand from Nice for about £28m to bolster their attack. Instead, the focus has been on securing the futures of their key players, with Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne signing new deals and others, including Youri Tielemans and John McGinn, expected to follow. Villa are also looking at a deal to bring back Marco Asensio, who spent the second half of last season at the club on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.
