4 hidden signs of loneliness that require immediate attention, according to a top psychologist
The first image of
loneliness
that might pop into your head could be of a person sitting in a room, staring out the window. But loneliness doesn't always look like that. It is more than just isolation, and is more serious than you assume.
Sometimes, it hides in plain sight. Loneliness can linger, even when you are surrounded by people. Dr. Julie Smith, a clinical psychologist and New York Times bestselling author, has recently spoken about some of the lesser-known signs of loneliness and why it could affect mental health if ignored. Let's take a look at the four hidden signs of loneliness.
Doomscrolling
While much of the conversation around screen addiction focuses on teenagers, the study's findings indicate that adults are just as susceptible.
Social media is often a medium to stay in touch with friends, family, and acquaintances. According to Dr. Smith, people experiencing loneliness may scroll endlessly through social media and feel like it's a lifeline. 'You scroll on social media constantly because it gives you that feeling that you're keeping up with your friends, but in reality, you haven't met them in person for way too long,' the psychologist said, in a
video
shared on Instagram.
Though using social media as one of the means to stay connected is normal, only depending on it and endlessly refreshing feeds to stay connected is a red flag.
Real day-to-day exchanges are superficial
One of the crucial signs of loneliness is that your daily interactions, be it with co-workers, neighbours, or acquaintances, may seem superficial. 'Your day-to-day interactions seem kind of superficial and leave you feeling disconnected and empty,' she
notes
. These interactions would appear to be shallow.

One might experience a lack of meaningful interaction, one that nourishes the soul.
Overthinking
Do you have a habit of replaying social interactions in your head? Well, this habit of dissecting everything over and over could be a far more serious issue than you think. According to Dr. Smith, obsessing over conversations or wondering if someone likes you or wants you in their life, is a crucial sign of loneliness. This is a way of seeking external validation to find meaning in your life.
You don't know where you belong
We all have an existential crisis once in a while, but if that's really bugging you, it is a red flag. What would you answer if someone asked you 'Where do you feel you truly belong?' If this question overwhelms you, it is a clear sign of loneliness. This sense of not knowing where you fit is a silent cry for connection.
'If these signs of loneliness resonate for you, this is something to take seriously. Not just because the feeling itself is painful, but because it is both a warning sign for the strain that a lack of human connection will put on your overall mental health, but also crucial information about what you need in order to make things better,' Dr.
Smith said.

'For some people, addressing loneliness is about finding and creating opportunities for connection. For others, it is about tackling the fears around social interaction and the skills needed to thrive in those environments,' she added.

Mumbai civic body to privatise suburban hospital services; low cost now limited to only 2 ration cards
Mumbai: Five key services in suburban hospitals, including Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli, will be handed over to private operators. Interestingly, the BMC has avoided using the label "public-private partnership (PPP)" and rebranded the move as the 'Civic Health Collaboration Model'. The privatisation plans cover a hemodialysis centre for kidney patients, sonology services, the entire cardiology department with cath lab facilities, MRI and CT scan facilities, and even a blood bank for patients requiring transfusions. The hospitals include Dr Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivli, Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, Bhabha Hospital in Bandra and Kurla, MT Agarwal in Mulund, and Bhagwati in Borivali. The preamble of all these tenders states, "Public Private Partnership Project [will be] for the period of 30 years on a renewal basis after 10 years." You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai For the first time, subsidised rates will be reserved only for yellow and orange ration card holders, as only these will be considered "BMC patients," according to the peripheral-hospital related tender documents. Previously, regardless of class, anyone could avail themselves of these services at affordable rates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Happens When You Massage Baking Soda Into Your Scalp Read More Undo The same conditions appear in PPP tenders for two newly constructed hospitals, one a new medical college on the Shatabdi Hospital campus in Govandi, and the other in Lallubhai Compound, Mankhurd. Both tenders have received multiple extensions due to insufficient bids. BMC scrapped full privatisation of Bhagwati Hospital only after MP Piyush Goyal intervened. "The other route now to privatise is by doing it one by one for individual services; this would avoid union or public anger," said a blood bank officer at a BMC hospital. The official added, "It could benefit patients if the private partner does an honest job. But if not, it could risk lives, for instance, private blood banks tend to be involved in malpractices to save costs." A medical superintendent of one suburban hospital said, "Some services are expensive for the BMC to run, and the biggest expense is manpower." A coalition of civil and political groups, 'Aspatal Bachao, Nijikarn Hatao', has argued that civic hospitals are funded by public money and cost concerns cannot justify privatisation. Demanding scrapping of PPP models and strengthening of existing hospitals, the group will hold its second round of protests on Aug 11. Besides, initiatives involving a private player have backfired. This week, a trust hired to run the ICU at VN Desai Hospital employed a person whose medical degrees could not be confirmed by the Maharashtra Medical Council. In 2023, a charitable trust handling the ICU at MT Agarwal Hospital employed a homeopath, which led to 149 deaths in nine months. Biocon sees GLP-1 weight-loss therapy as a future growth driver
Biocon will continue to deepen its push in the insulin business, even as the biopharmaceutical company will have GLP-1 weight-loss therapy as one of the key focus areas in its future growth strategy, Shreehas Tambe, chief executive of Biocon Biologics, told ET on Friday. Leveraging decades of experience in insulin, the Bengaluru-based company aims to gain an edge over rivals in the race for copycats of GLP-1 drugs, which are gaining popularity as an effective treatment for glucose control as well as weight management. Novo Nordisk's blockbuster weight-loss drug semaglutide (branded Wegovy) will go off patent in India in March. Live Events On being asked about the disruption in the diabetes drug segment due to the inroads by GLP-1 products, Tambe said: 'The disruption (due to GLP-1) is complementary to insulin. We are bullish on both insulin and GLP-1.' 'The originators who brought GLP1s are the insulin companies, and they were able to do that because it is synergistic. Synergy not just in terms of the therapy area but also in terms of operations, touchpoints for prescribers, healthcare givers and customers,' said Tambe, who is also the company's managing director. Biocon has both biosimilar insulins and GLP-1 peptides that mimic a naturally occurring gut hormone that controls sugar levels and appetite. 'That is what differentiates us from the rest,' he said. 'Having been close to the market will give an advantage because it requires a lot of expertise as the drug is in the form of an injectable, given in a device, is a chronic treatment and hence requires a long-term relationship with patients who need to be trained on those devices,' said Tambe. 'All of these we have been able to do with our insulins in the past several years in 80-plus countries that is why we feel confident and we are developing both portfolios that are complementary to each other.' The company got US Food and Drug Administration approval for insulin aspart, its second interchangeable biosimilar insulin, deepening its presence in the US insulin market. 'The US FDA approval of Kirsty (biosimilar aspart) builds on the strong foundation established with Semglee (biosimilar insulin glargine), enabling us to offer patients the full range of affordable short- and long-acting insulin therapies,' he said. 'Insulin aspart we will enter by the end of this fiscal,' he said. The company got approval for diabetes drug liraglutide in India in June. The drug, used in treating type-2 diabetes, has already launched in the UK and the EU. 'We are working towards expeditiously launching the drug product through our commercialisation partners in India,' said Tambe. 'The biggest concern for the year ahead is external risks to the business, such as potential tariff and geopolitical headwinds. Some of these things are not in our control but that is the biggest concern for the whole industry too,' he said.

Dept inquiry to be initiated against NMMC hospital doctor booked for botched cataract operation at father's private hospital
Navi Mumbai: Following an FIR registered at Vashi police station on Monday against the father-son duo ophthalmologists Dr D V Pandit and Dr Chandan Pandit, respectively, for an alleged botched cataract operation on 67-year-old Rajendra Gupta and four other patients at the father's private eye hospital in Sector 10, Vashi, causing them loss of vision, the NMMC administration has sought a report for conducting a departmental inquiry against Dr Chandan Pandit. Dr Chandan Pandit is a permanent employee at NMMC hospital in Airoli. Dr Prashant Jawade, medical superintendent at NMMC hospital, Vashi, said, "Since ophthalmologist Dr Chandan Pandit is a permanent employee at NMMC hospital at Airoli and he gets a non-practice allowance, as per the NMMC administration policy, he is not permitted to practise at any private hospital. Hence, the FIR document has been obtained and submitted to NMMC administration, which will submit a report followed by a departmental inquiry and then further course of action. " An RTI application reply revealed that in Nov 2016, when Dr Chandan Pandit was working as an ophthalmologist at NMMC hospital, Vashi, he was suspended as a disciplinary action after repeatedly receiving complaints from patients and hospital staff alleging indiscipline by him. After a departmental inquiry, though, he was reinstated in Dec 2017. As Thane civil surgeon's report concluded medical negligence by the two ophthalmologists after a complaint was lodged by Gupta a resident of Koparkhairane, an FIR was registered against them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai The civil surgeon's report mentioned that Gupta's cataract operation on the left eye was done on March 27 despite his random blood sugar (RBS) being 229mg, which was high. Even his physical fitness test was not done as per the medical treatment papers. Even before and after the surgery, the patient's diabetes control advice was not taken. Hence, the doctors did not follow the mandatory guidelines of the All India Ophthalmic Society and the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment for diabetes control before performing a cataract operation on a patient. Also, even though Gupta had chronic iridocyclitis, the doctors did not use topical steroid eyedrops before performing the operation. The complainant had contacted four other patients who lost vision due to the alleged botched cataract operation. They included Airoli's Kisan Dhanawade (69) and his wife Laxmi (46), Sanjeev Gupta from Vashi, and Anjani Sawant from Airoli. They also lodged a complaint at Vashi police in April.
