Soaring temperatures prompt heat awareness drive in Swarnandhra campaign
Tirupati: District Collector Dr S Venkateswar on Saturday urged people to stay cautious in view of the soaring summer temperatures, which have prompted authorities to choose 'Beat the Heat' as the theme for this month's 'Swarnandhra – Swachh Andhra' campaign.
Participating in the programme at Naidupet in Sullurpet constituency, the Collector reminded that the campaign has been held on the third Saturday of every month since January, with a new theme each time to address local and seasonal issues. He said, 'May has seen an alarming rise in temperatures, often crossing 42°C in several regions. With heatwave conditions intensifying since April, we are taking special measures to ensure people, especially children and the elderly, are not adversely affected.
As part of the campaign, Dr Venkateswar noted that initiatives such as planting saplings, setting up free drinking water kiosks, and placing water troughs for birds and animals under the employment guarantee scheme were being actively pursued. Distribution of ORS packets to households is also underway to help prevent dehydration. He called on citizens to participate actively in door-to-door waste collection to ensure effective waste segregation.
Sullurpet MLA N Vijayasree, who also took part in the event, stressed the importance of public participation in maintaining cleanliness. 'If everyone keeps their surroundings clean, we can prevent many health issues,' she stated. Ahead of the main programme, the District Collector and the MLA planted saplings along both sides of the road near Gomati Centre. Later, they inaugurated facilities for bird care – providing millets, drinking water, and shaded shelters at Gandhi Municipal Park.
Former MP Nelavala Subrahmanyam, Naidupet Municipal Chairperson Katakam Deepika, Vice-Chairman Sheikh Rafi, Municipal Commissioner Fazlulla, Tahsildar Rajendra, and several other officials took part.

Tirupati district gears up for full monsoon season
Tirupati: In view of the early arrival of the southwest monsoon, widespread rainfall is expected across the district. District Collector Dr S Venkateswar has instructed officials to remain vigilant and ensure full preparedness to tackle any challenges that may arise during the rainy season. Along with DRO G Narasimhulu, the Collector conducted a review meeting on Friday, issuing detailed instructions to officials from various departments. Emphasising the need for a comprehensive and robust action plan, Dr Venkateswar urged authorities to draw on past experiences to implement preventive measures more effectively this year. Officials were asked to follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Disaster Management Authority and work in close coordination. The Collector directed the establishment of control rooms at the district, division, and mandal levels, with dedicated phone lines and toll-free numbers to be made available to the public. Panchayat secretaries and engineering assistants were instructed to jointly inspect tanks and canal bunds and submit reports on their condition. The Health Department was told to ensure that all medical officers, ANMs, and ASHA workers remain alert and that adequate stocks of medicines and medical equipment are maintained at all health centres. Special instructions were also issued to the police, fire, planning, revenue, irrigation, and panchayat departments. Departments such as Irrigation, Electricity (APEPDCL), Revenue, Agriculture, and Horticulture were directed to take immediate preventive action. Special attention was urged for flood-prone zones identified during last year's heavy rains. Reiterating the district administration's primary responsibility to protect citizens, the Collector called for full-scale preparedness. He warned of the risks posed by thunderstorms and lightning during the rainy season and instructed officials to raise awareness among the public and take precautions to prevent harm to both people and livestock and set up rehabilitation centres. The meeting was attended by RDOs of Srikalahasti, Sullurpeta, and Tirupati – Bhanu Prakash Reddy, Kiranmayi and Rammohan, DPO Suseela Devi and other officials.

City's Heat Action Plan: Whitewashing rooftops to reduce heat, raising awareness
Prayagraj: To combat the intensifying heatwave, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is speeding up its "Heat Action Plan" to apply white paint or lime on rooftops in slum areas, which is expected to reduce indoor temperatures by 3-4 degrees Celsius. Additionally, Public Address Systems will broadcast radio jingles and video messages at major intersections to educate the public about heatwave safety measures. An 18-member committee, led by municipal commissioner Seelam Sai Teja, has been formed to oversee the implementation, comprising representatives from various departments, including health, education and emergency services, as well as NGOs and other stakeholders. A workshop at the Smart City auditorium, led by additional municipal commissioner Deependra Yadav, emphasised the collaborative efforts between the Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (UPSDMA), the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Gandhinagar, and the municipal corporation. Experts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Atul Kumar Mishra and Akash Mishra, noted that Prayagraj has experienced record-breaking temperatures in recent years, including a peak of 45.4 degrees Celsius in May 2025 and a scorching 48.8 degrees Celsius last year. Speaking at the workshop, Kaniz Fatima, project director (drought management), UPSDMA, emphasised that the state govt is actively executing the state heat action plan across all districts. The efforts have also been lauded by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Govt of India, which recommended the expansion of such plans to major cities like Jhansi, Agra, Prayagraj and Lucknow. PMC authorities have decided to implement a comprehensive action plan to combat the rising threat of heatwaves in the city. Key components of the plan include broadcasting audio messages through public address systems to raise awareness about heatwave precautions. In slum areas, rooftops will be whitewashed to reduce indoor temperatures. Additionally, the civic body will set up drinking water stations and shaded rest areas in public locations. The plan also emphasises the promotion of green belts and ensuring easy access to drinking water and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to help residents stay safe during extreme heat conditions. "We have decided to undertake several steps to protect the denizens from the heatwave, especially those living in the slums and with limited resources to protect themselves from the scorching heat," said Teja. Painting rooftops with a mixture of lime (chuna) and fevicol. Lime, known for its high solar reflectance, bounces off the sun's harsh rays, keeping roof surfaces cooler.

Noida issues a heatwave advisory
Noida: With temperatures in NCR continuing to climb, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Noida has issued a public advisory urging residents to take strict precautions against the ongoing heatwave and hot winds, or loo. "Awareness programmes are being carried out in schools and factories to ensure community preparedness," said district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma. "Citizens are advised to stay indoors between 12pm and 3pm, wear light cotton clothing, keep hydrated, and use home remedies like ORS, lemon water, and raw mango drinks to prevent dehydration." It cautions against consumption of alcohol, tea, and coffee, which may worsen dehydration. It also urges residents to carry water, and use umbrellas, caps, or sunglasses when stepping outdoors. Additionally, DDMA emphasised the importance of caring for animals, advising residents to keep pets in shaded areas with access to clean drinking water. Safety measures include avoiding stale or high-protein food, not staying on the top floors of buildings during peak heat hours and not leaving children or pets in parked vehicles. The public has also been encouraged to stay informed through local weather updates and seek immediate medical help if any symptoms of heatstroke — such as dizziness, nausea, or high fever appear. The advisory was issued under the direction of DM Manish Kumar Verma, and supervision of ADM (Finance & Revenue) Atul Kumar. Meanwhile, a health department team on Tuesday conducted inspections across hospitals, Community Health Centers (CHCs), and Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in the city to ensure heatwave preparedness. According to the CMO, all facilities were found ready to handle heat-related emergencies.
