Carlos Sainz Sr considering run for FIA president
Two-time FIA world champion Carlos Sainz Sr may be throwing his hat into the ring to become the motorsport governing body's president, according to a report by Motorsport.com.
Current president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has served since 2021, but his four years have been beset by controversy. He has not officially declared himself available for re-election, but is widely known to be mounting a campaign.
The selection will occur in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on December 12.
Both Sainz Sr and Ben Sulayem are 63 years old and former competitors. Sainz Sr, who has won four Dakar Rally events, competed in the event in January. The elder Sainz is the father of Williams F1 driver Carlos Sainz.
'This possibility has been in my mind for some time now, not very deeply, but now I think it could be the right time in my career for me to take the step,' said Sainz Sr, as reported by the BBC. 'I'm confident I can do a good job and put together an excellent team to give back to the sport part of what it has given me.
'I have accumulated a lot of experience in this sport throughout the years and I'm certain I can bring new and interesting things, to strengthen and develop the sport and the automobile world.'
There have been no formal declarations by Sainz Sr, Ben Sulayem or any others at this time, though others are expected to run.
Under Ben Sulayem's leadership, FIA has experienced a bevy of contentious situations. Robert Reid, the deputy president for sport, resigned in April, claiming 'a fundamental breakdown in governance standards'. That led former FIA CEO Natalie Robyn, who was forced out in the summer of 2024, to break her silence and concur with Reid's sentiments.
Drivers have also been critical of Ben Sulayem's ban on swearing. Moreover, Susie Wolff, the CEO of F1 Academy for aspiring female drivers, filed a legal complaint against the FIA after a conflict of interest inquiry was lodged against her and husband Toto Wolff, president of Mercedes Motosport, but FIA closed it two days later.

F1 to continue with titanium skid blocks after grass fires
Formula One cars will continue to use titanium skid blocks for the rest of the season after testing stainless steel alternatives to reduce the risk of trackside grass fires. The second practice at Suzuka in April was stopped four times by red flags, twice because of trackside fires set by sparks from cars. Practice at last year's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai was also interrupted by a red flag when a small grass fire broke out at trackside. The governing FIA said on Wednesday the titanium skid blocks beneath the car, which spark on contact with the asphalt or kerbs, would remain the mandated material but teams would also be required to have stainless steel ones available. This was because 'they may become mandatory if similar grass fire incidents occur as seen at Suzuka early this year. Additional testing of stainless steel skid blocks will be conducted at selected events throughout the season to support further evaluation.' The decision followed analysis of stainless steel blocks tested at last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix.

Opel unveils all-electric Mokka for rally debut
Opel has transformed its electric Mokka SUV into a rally car which aligns with the revitalised GSE performance line. Looking for a new or used Opel? Find it here with CARmag! Unlike most sports cars meant to demonstrate a firm's performance commitments, this will actually see competition. It has been designed to compete in the FIA's new eRally5 regulations, set to replace the Corsa Electric Rally. On the outside, a distinct black, grey, and yellow livery with the GSE branding are present. Large alloy wheels and yellow brake callipers showcase its performance focus. Aggressive bumpers and a roof-mounted intake complete the rally-ready appearance, cues that will likely influence the upcoming road-going Opel Mokka GSE due in late 2025. Power comes from a single electric motor delivering 207kW and 345Nm of torque. This power is directed to the front wheels via a multi-plate limited-slip differential and a racing transmission. The 54kWh battery pack is carried over from the standard Mokka Electric but gains added protection through special encapsulation and an underride guard. The interior is stripped for competition, featuring an FIA-certified roll cage and bucket seats with six-point harnesses. Safety is paramount, with a 400V system that automatically shuts down in a collision and an electrically non-conductive fire extinguishing system. Opel plans to offer the Mokka GSE Rally to private customers and teams for the 2026 rally season. A prototype will debut at the ELE Rally Eindhoven in the Netherlands today and tomorrow, part of the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup. MAJOR changes for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix
The 2025 Monaco Grand Prix will feature several significant rule changes aimed at enhancing competitiveness and excitement on the iconic street circuit. The race, the eighth of 24 on this season's calendar, will take place on Sunday, 25 May. For the first time, drivers will be required to make two mandatory pit stops during the race, irrespective of weather conditions. This change mandates the use of at least three sets of tyres, with a minimum of two different compounds in dry conditions. The FIA implemented this rule to encourage varied strategies and increase overtaking opportunities on a track known for its limited passing chances. To improve safety and performance, several sections of the Circuit de Monaco have been resurfaced: From the exit of Turn 4 to the entry of Turn 6 From the exit of Turn 6 to the entry of Turn 10 From the exit of Turn 19 to the exit of Turn 1 Additionally, the FIA has upgraded the fencing between Turns 13 and 15 on the left-hand side, incorporating a 45-degree angled upper section to enhance driver safety. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) zone remains unchanged, with the detection point located 80 metres after Turn 16 and activation 18 metres after Turn 19. Regarding track limits, drivers using the escape road at Turns 10-11 must rejoin the track only when signaled by green lights operated by marshals, ensuring safe re-entry. Given Monaco's unique logistical challenges, the FIA has adjusted team curfew regulations for the event. Specific details on these adjustments have been communicated directly to the teams to accommodate the tight scheduling constraints typical of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. These changes reflect the FIA's commitment to enhancing the spectacle of the Monaco Grand Prix while maintaining the safety and integrity of the sport.
