Auburn Formally Retiring QB Cam Newton's No. 2 Jersey During Game vs. Georgia
College Football Auburn Formally Retiring QB Cam Newton's No. 2 Jersey During Game vs. Georgia Published Aug. 18, 2025 2:36 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Auburn will retire 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey this fall, making him the fourth player in program history to receive the honor. The ceremony will take place during Auburn's home game against rival Georgia on Oct. 11. Newton will join Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) as former Tigers football players whose numbers have been formally retired. The jerseys of Sullivan and Beasley were retired following Sullivan's 1971 Heisman Trophy season, and Jackson's number was retired as part of Auburn's football centennial celebration in 1992. No one has worn No. 2 at Auburn since Newton and the Tigers beat Oregon in the Bowl Championship Series national title game for the 2010 season. But soon it will be officially out of service. "Auburn will always be home to me," Newton said in a statement. "The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired ... is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!" One of the most decorated players in Auburn and SEC history, Newton led Auburn to conference and national titles with a perfect 14-0 record. He threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores. He became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. ADVERTISEMENT "Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player," Auburn athletic director John Cohen said. "Retiring Cam's jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time." Reporting by The Associated Press. Auburn retiring Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey on Oct. 11
Auburn is retiring the No. 2 jersey of Heisman Trophy winner and national champion quarterback Cam Newton. The ceremony will take place on Oct. 11 during the Tigers' game against rival Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Newton, 36, will be just the fourth player so honored at Auburn, joining fellow Heisman winners Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Pat Sullivan (No. 7) along with record-setting receiver Terry Beasley (No. 88). No Auburn player has worn the No. 2 since Newton led the unbeaten Tigers (14-0) to a BCS national championship and won the Heisman in 2010. "Auburn will always be home to me," Newton said in a statement. "The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!" Newton passed for 2,854 yards with 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions and ran for 1,473 yards and 20 scores in his lone season at Auburn. In addition to the Heisman Trophy, he was rewarded with the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Manning, Davey O'Brien and AP Player of the Year awards. He became the No. 1 overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers and played 11 seasons, winning NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2015 and earning three Pro Bowl selections. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Panthers great Cam Newton to have jersey number retired by Auburn
Before he was a Carolina Panthers legend, Cam Newton was a University of Auburn legend. So before there was a No. 1, there was a No. 2. But that won't be the case, at least for the Tigers' football program, any longer—as the school announced on Monday that they will retire Newton's No. 2 jersey this upcoming season. Newton's lone year at Auburn is regarded as one of, if the not greatest season in college football history. That storybook 2010 campaign saw the Atlanta, Ga. native pass for 2,908 yards and 30 touchdowns and run for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores en route to a landslide victory of the Heisman Trophy and the second-ever national championship in Auburn's history. His efforts helped him become the first overall selection of the 2011 NFL draft—a pick made, of course, by the Panthers. Auburn is set to officially retire Newton's number on Oct. 11, before the Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Newton will be the fourth Tiger to have his number retired—joining Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan and Terry Beasley. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
