Saint Sernin's takes turn to design Paris couture for Jean Paul Gaultier

Washington Post29-01-2025

PARIS — Fashion designer Ludovic de Saint Sernin stepped in to design Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture Wednesday at Paris Couture Week, reinterpreting the house's legacy with a collection steeped in his signature aesthetic of eroticism, queer-musing, and fetish-inflected detailing.
The evening show honored Gaultier's enduring themes — gender subversion, body-conscious silhouettes, and provocation — while layering in de Saint Sernin's own stripped-down vision.

Miley Cyrus Pays Homage to Madonna With Her Latest Vintage Flex

Two-and-a-half years before Miley Cyrus was born, Madonna was in the throes of her Blond Ambition tour, hitting the stage around the world in the now-iconic Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra. Now, 35 years later, Cyrus is celebrating the release of her latest album, Something Beautiful, in Madge's image. Last night, Cyrus wore a chocolate brown dress from Gaultier's fall 1990 collection. Like Madonna's Blond Ambition look, it featured the same lace-up corsetry throughout the front, sides, and along the hips—though the embroidered cups on Cyrus's dress were far less exaggerated than Madonna's poke-an-eye-out bust. And while Madge wore her corset with fishnets and a pair of panties, Cyrus's look featured a midi-length fringe skirt. Styled by Bradley Kenneth, she paired the piece of prized vintage with a pair of pointy-toe pumps secured with an ankle strap. The duo shared the stage in 2014 during Cyrus's special for MTV's Unplugged, where they performed a mash-up of Madonna's 'Don't Tell Me' and Cyrus's 'We Can't Stop.' In 2022, Cyrus covered 'Like a Prayer.' While Miley Cyrus has worn no shortage of major vintage surrounding her Something Beautiful release–from Mugler to Roberto Cavalli—this Jean Paul Gaultier isn't only a major flex, but an homage to the pop stars who came before her.

Balenciaga, Maison Margiela Among Highlights of Provisional Paris Couture Schedule

PARIS — Demna's final haute couture collection for Balenciaga and Glenn Martens' debut for Maison Margiela will be among the highlights of a thinned-out Paris Couture Week, the provisional calendar released Monday by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode confirmed. As reported, Dior is sitting out the season following the arrival of Jonathan Anderson at the creative helm of womenswear. He succeeds Maria Grazia Chiuri, who showed 31 haute couture looks as part of her swansong cruise collection in Rome last week. The Woolmark Prize winner is set to show his first ready-to-wear collection for the house in September and will make his couture debut next January. Also dropping off the calendar this season are Alexis Mabille, Julien Fournié, Gaurav Gupta, Maison Sara Chraibi and Miss Sohee. There will be 27 shows on the four-day fall couture schedule slated to run between July 7 and 10, with Schiaparelli kicking off proceedings on the Monday at 10 a.m. and Germanier closing the week at 5:30 p.m. on the Thursday. Balenciaga will stage its annual couture show on July 9 at midday, after which Demna will move to Gucci and hand the baton to Pierpaolo Piccioli, who was confirmed as the brand's new creative director last month. Meanwhile, Martens will inaugurate his tenure at Margiela with an Artisanal collection due to be unveiled on July 9 at 7:30 p.m. After presenting his first couture collection for Valentino in January, Alessandro Michele is sitting out this season. The Italian house announced in September that it planned to show couture once a year in Paris. Among those returning to the official calendar are Iris Van Herpen, who has also moved to an annual calendar for her couture collections; Robert Wun; ArdAzAei and Adeline André. Syrian-born, Dubai-based designer Rami Al Ali will be making his debut on the official calendar on July 10 at 2:30 p.m. Chanel, Giambattista Valli, Zuhair Murad and Stéphane Rolland will stick to their usual time slots. Chanel is showing its last collection designed by a studio team ahead of Matthieu Blazy's debut show as artistic director in October. Giorgio Armani Privé's two shows will take place at July 8 at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., instead of 6 and 7 p.m. previously, while on July 9, Elie Saab has moved to 2:30 p.m. from 12:30 p.m., and Viktor & Rolf to 4 p.m. from 4:30 p.m. Juana Martin and Ashi Studio have moved up by two days and will now be showing on the Tuesday at 3:30 and 4:30 p.m., respectively. In another eagerly awaited debut, Michael Rider will present his debut collection for Celine on the eve of Paris Couture Week with a fashion show on July 6 at 2:30 p.m., as previously reported. It is not yet clear if the display will feature womenswear, menswear or both. Patou will show its spring 2026 women's ready-to-wear collection on the same day at 5 p.m. Best of WWD Bottega Veneta Through the Years Chanel's Ambassadors Over The Years Ranking Fashion's Longest-serving Creative Directors

Blackpink's Jennie Models Bold Looks in Jean Paul Gaultier Campaign

LIFE IS A CABARET: Awaiting the first collection by its new permanent creative director Duran Lantink, Jean Paul Gaultier has released a pre-fall 2025 collection fronted by none other than Blackpink's Jennie. Created by the design studio at the Paris maison, the pre-fall collection includes corsetry, tailoring and trompe-l'œil motifs, all signatures of the house. Looks were created around the four elements: water, fire, earth and air. More from WWD EXCLUSIVE: Rosé, Jay Chou and Lewis Hamilton Discuss Their Suitcase Stickers Jean Paul Gaultier Is Officially a Cabaret King Jennie Revives Mugler's 1992 Les Cow-boys Collection for Coachella 2025 Weekend Two 'This campaign felt like stepping into a dream,' Jennie commented in a release. 'Every look had its own energy — fluid, fiery, grounded or light — and I loved expressing all those sides of myself through Gaultier's incredible design. 'Jean Paul Gaultier has always inspired me to be bold, and this was truly a celebration of that spirit,' she added. Max Siedentopf, an Emmy-award winner, directed the campaign, with styling by Minhee Park and Leopold Duchemin, hair by Seonyeong Lee, makeup by Joyoun Won and nails by Cam Tran. According to the Gaultier house, Jennie 'appears as a modern-day showgirl, commanding the stage of this visual universe. Her presence, both grounded and ethereal, brings a new dimension to each look — flirting with instinctive strength and authenticity.' While strongly associated with Chanel, where she has been a global ambassador since 2017, Jennie is known for her eclectic fashion tastes, wearing looks by Mugler and Georges Hobeika for her recent appearance at Coachella 2025. Jennie attended the Jean Paul Gaultier couture collection created by guest designer Ludovic de Saint Sernin last January in Paris, wearing a beaded nude illusion gown from Gaultier's spring 2008 couture collection.
